    Notes: Dark current-voltage (J-V) characteristics of p-i-n a-Si solar cells are studied to clarify the effect of the p/i interface layer on the open-circuit voltage (Voc). It is shown that the recombination current in the p/i interface region is predominant in the a-Si solar cells with an i-layer thickness of less than 200 nm and has a great effect on the dark-current transport in the solar cells. It is also shown that the current transport of the cells with the p/i interface layer of constant band gap of a thickness of more than 14 nm is effectively the same as that of a cell in which the band gap of the whole i layer is equal to that of the interface layer. A model in which the dark current of the cell consists of the recombination current at the p/i interface and the recombination current in the bulk region of the i layer is proposed. Using this model, the Voc degradation for the a-Si solar cells with the p/i interface layer is shown to be due to the defects generated in the i layer.

    Notes: The objective of this study was to compare a nonaugmented autogenous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft with an autogenous graft augmented with Leeds-Keio polyester mesh (L-K mesh) when the augmentation was fixed to bone at both ends or fixed to bone at one end. Twenty-six rabbits were divided into 3 groups (nonaugmented, augmented with one-end fixation and augmented with two-end fixation), and were evaluated 12 weeks postoperatively. The gross findings demonstrated adhesion of the proliferated infrapatellar fat pad to the reconstructed ACL in the autogenous group, but not in the augmentation groups. The microangiographic study revealed poor revascularization in the augmentation groups. Histologically, in the L-K two-end fixation group, the biological segment of the reconstructed ACL remained necrotic. The biomechanical study showed that the augmentation groups were significantly stiffer and stronger than the nonaugmented graft

    Notes: The breakdown of inositol phospholipids is an important transmembrane signalling system that is composed of two kinds of signals: the diacylglycerol-protein kinase C signal, and the inositol trisphosphate-Ca2+ signal. Using membrane-permeable diacylglycerol, 1-oleoy-2-acetylgly-cerol (OAG), and calcium ionophore, A-23187, the effects of these chemicals on the epidermal adenylate cyclase system were investigated. OAG increased forskolin- and cholera toxin-induced cyclic AMP accumulations, but receptor adenylate cyclase responses were markedly decreased by treatment with OAG. The effects of OAG were inhibited by the protein kinase C inhibitor, H-7. Calcium ionophore, A-23187, had no effect on the epidermal adenylate cyclase responses. Combinations of OAG and A-23187 (as well as the calcium chelator, EGTA), showed that the action of OAG was mostly unaffected by the modulation of intracellular and extracellular Ca2+ concentrations. The results suggest that among the signals triggered by the breakdown of inositol phospholipids, only diacylglycerol-protein kinase C signal is involved in the regulation of the epidermal adenylate cyclase system.

    Notes: Summary We constructed an infectious molecular clone of simian immunodeficiency virus from an African mandrill (SIVMND). Upon transfection, this clone directed the production of progeny virus particles infectious to and cytopathic for CD4+ human leukemia cells. Thirteen frameshift proviral mutants with an alteration in the eight open reading frames of SIVMND were generated by recombinant DNA techniques, and were analyzed biologically and biochemically. While mutations in the structural genesgag, pol, andenv abolished viral growth and induction of cytopathology, mutants of thevif, vpr, andnef genes were fully biologically active. Of thetat andrev mutants, only onerev mutant grew in CD4+ cells with delayed kinetics. In reporter-based transient expression systems, transactivation potentials of thetat andrev mutants were evaluated. A mutant lacking 2nd coding exon oftat gene exhibitedtat activity similar to that of the wild type clone. The infectiousrev mutant was partially defective forrev gene activity.

    Notes: Summary A frame-shifttat gene mutant of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), which showed no detectable trans-activation potential, was constructed in vitro. Upon transfection, this clone directed the synthesis of virus mRNAs,gag proteins and virion-associated reverse transcriptase (RT) at a low level as was observed with thetat mutants of HIV-2 and simian immunodeficiency virus isolated from African green monkey (SIVAGM). Using these mutant viruses, trans-activation efficiency of viral gene expression bytat was compared among HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIVAGM. SIVAGM seemed to be less dependent ontat for RT production than HIV-1 and HIV-2.

    Notes: Summary Mutations were introduced by recombinant DNA techniques into 9 genes of an infectious molecular clone of human immunodeficiency virus type 1. The 24 mutants generated were characterized biochemically and biologically by transfection and infection experiments. None of the mutants which have mutations ingag (p17, p24, and p15 regions),pol (protease, reverse transcriptase, and endonuclease domains),env (gp120 region),tat, orrev were infectious, whereasvif, vpr, vpu, some ofenv (gp41) andnef mutants could grow in human CD4+ cells to various degrees. Of the non-infectious mutants, only endonuclease (pol) and gp41 mutants exhibited normal phenotypes with respect to the production of functional reverse transcriptase, the expression ofgag, pol, andenv proteins, and the generation of progeny virions, when examined in transient assays. All infectious mutants killed the CD4+ cells with the exception of a mutant carrying a defect in thevif gene.

    Notes: Summary Primate immunodeficiency viruses carry a unique set of transacting regulator genes, which are essential for viral replication. The exchangeability of these Tat and Rev transactivators derived from viruses of the four major subgroups identified to date was assessed in transient transfection and infection assay systems. The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), a major causative virus of human AIDS, efficiently activated the other viruses. In contrast, thetat andrev gene products of HIV-2, SIVAGM (virus of the African green monkey), and SIVMND (virus of the mandrill) did not fully transactivate the HIV-1. In particular, therev of HIV-1 was not substantially replaced by those of the other viruses. The result that HIV-1 is distinct from the other immunodeficiency viruses with respect to the compatibility of two transactivators gives a firm functional basis for the unique phylogenetic position of HIV-1.

    Notes: Abstract An overview of the vascular exclusion technique in liver resection is presented. The technical aspects of hepatic vascular exclusion (HVE) are described along with the hemodynamic monitoring requirements. The hepatic tolerance to normothermic liver ischemia of 60-min duration is quite good in the absence of underlying chronic liver disease such as cirrhosis or steatosis. However, our recent experience with cirrhotic patients has demonstrated that vascular clamping may be well tolerated even after major liver resection if normothermic liver ischemia is limited (33 min for HVE, 55 min for Pringle maneuver). The main advantages of HVE are: reduction of operative blood loss, increased resectability rate of HCC when the tumor is close or invades the hepatic veins and/or the vena cava, and better safety during the performance of the most hazardous liver resections.

    Notes: Abstract 129I Mössbauer measurements have been performed on unidirectionally stretched iodinedoped polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) films which are widely used as optical polarizers. In the films iodine is observed to be in the form of I−, I 3 − , and I 5 − and the stretch of the films increases the abundance of the polyiodides, I 3 − and I 5 − . In the stretched PVA films, it has become clear that the linear polyiodides lie parallel to the stretching direction.
