Notes: Summary Mechanisms of resistance to beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) were studied by comparing the multiplication and distribution of BNYVV in root tissue of some beet accessions. Seedlings were infected either by soil containing resting spores ofPolymyxa betae with BNYVV, or by a viruliferous zoospore suspension. With both inoculation methods high virus concentrations were obtained in rootlets of the susceptible cultivar ‘Regina’. Using infested soil, low virus concentrations were found in the partially resistant cultivar ‘Rima’ and in the resistant accessions Holly and WB42. When a zoospore suspension was used, similar virus concentrations occurred in ‘Rima’ and Holly as in ‘Regina’, while a low virus concentration was found in WB42. By in situ localisation studies, using immunogold-silver labelling, virus was detected in ‘Regina’ after infection by soil or a zoospore suspension, but it could only be detected in the resistant accessions after infection by a zoospore suspension. In rootlets of ‘Regina’, ‘Rima’ and Holly, virus was found in the epidermis, cortex parenchyma, endodermis, and interstitial parenchyma, but in general not inside the vascular tissue. In WB42 the virus, occurring in small aggregates, seemed to be restricted to the epidermis and some cortex parenchyma cells. Comparing both the multiplication and distribution of BNYVV in rootlets of the accessions studied, it is concluded that the virus resistance mechanism in ‘Rima’ and Holly is different from that in WB42.

Notes: Abstract A simple IBA-sdf form for theE1 transition operator containing an one-body term and a two-body term is tested in a non-analytical case. TheE 1 transition probabilities in the rare-earth region are reproduced rather well.

Notes: Abstract We analyze the pion-exchange contribution to semi-inclusive leptoproduction on protons, with a slow nucleon or delta in the final state. We calculate the crosssection for slow protons including also the effect of the delta intermediate state, which is the dominant contribution. A comparison with recent experiment shows reasonable agreement for small Bjorkenx, if the cut-off in the pion-nucleon-delta form-factor is chosen to be around 0.7 GeV. This substantiates the recent conjecture that sea-quark distributions can be completely associated with the meson cloud, but suggests that the pion-nucleon-delta form-factor should be softer than the one used in description of nuclear forces by meson exchange. We also compare the pion-exchange and the string-fragmentation models and point out possible future experimental tests.

Notes: Abstract The Artru-Mennessier and the string fragmentation procedure as implemented in the code VENUS have been compared. The two fragmentation prescriptions predict a similar rapidity spectrum including its energy dependence and event multiplicities, but give rise to very different intermittency results.

Notes: Abstract The plant regeneration ability of zygotic embryo-derived callus cultures was studied for 12 A. cepa varieties and accessions, two A. fistulosum varieties, one A. fistulosum x A. cepa interspecific hybrid and two A. porrum varieties. Compact embryogenic callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The embryogenic calluses of all three Allium species were similar in appearance. For all accessions tested plants could be regenerated at a high frequency from this compact callus through somatic embryogenesis, when using kinetin supplemented MS medium (regeneration medium). Addition of abscisic acid to the regeneration medium stimulated the formation of both somatic embryos and shoots for a number of varieties. Concerning shoot regeneration from callus cultures, significant differences existed between genotypes of all accessions except one.
