Notes: Abstract A new principle of sensorimotor control of legged locomotion in an unpredictable environment is proposed on the basis of neurophysiological knowledge and a theory of nonlinear dynamics. Stable and flexible locomotion is realized as a global limit cycle generated by a global entrainment between the rhythmic activities of a nervous system composed of coupled neural oscillators and the rhythmic movements of a musculo-skeletal system including interaction with its environment. Coordinated movements are generated not by slaving to an explicit representation of the precise trajectories of the movement of each part but by dynamic interactions among the nervous system, the musculo-skeletal system and the environment. The performance of a bipedal model based on the above principle was investigated by computer simulation. Walking movements stable to mechanical perturbations and to environmental changes were obtained. Moreover, the model generated not only the walking movement but also the running movement by changing a single parameter nonspecific to the movement. The transitions between the gait patterns occurred with hysteresis.

Notes: We report three patients with pemphigoid nodularis. Patients were females aged 76, 71 and 50 years, and all had features of billions pemphigoid together with prurigo-like lesions at some stage of their illness. In two eases, nodular lesions preceded the onset of blistering by some months. Blisters arose on normal skin and in one patient also at sites of prurigo lesions. Routine histology of bullous lesions revealed the presence of subepidermal blisters. Electron microscopy perlormed in two eases confirmed the level of split to be through the lamina lucicla. Direct immunoflourenscence in all eases was positive, with linear basement membrane zone deposition of IgG and G3. Circulating IgG anti-basement membrane antibody was also detected in all patients, and in two, immunoblotting revealed a single antigen of 220 kD.

Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded molecular solid H2S have been measured up to 23 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond-anvil cell. In the orientationally disordered phase I between 0.47 and 11 GPa, the symmetric stretching mode ν1 shows a red-shift in frequency (dν1/dP=−10.1 cm−1/GPa ) and a dramatic broadening with pressure. At about 11 GPa, the antisymmetric stretching band ν3 appears at the higher-frequency side of ν1. Near this same pressure five low-frequency vibrational modes also appear and show pressure-sensitive features. These results indicate a pressure-induced phase transition near 11 GPa. This new solid phase, which persists to at least 23 GPa at 300 K, seems to be the same phase as previously found above 3.3 GPa at 25 K.

Notes: In this Study a variety of immunoelectron microscopic methods were used to define the precise ultrastructural binding site of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita antibodies (EBA-Ab). We used two EBA sera which immunoblotted with the same skin-extracted protein as that labelled by a monoclonal antibody (LH7.2) which is known to react with the carboxy terminus of type VII collagen. Gold-conjugated antibodies were used in two different immunoelectron microscopic procedures to compare the labelling characteristics of EBA-Ab and LH7.2 in normal human skin. Antibody incubations were performed using ultra-thin cryosections of unfixed skin and thin slices of fresh skin (en bloc technique) before conventional fixation and embedding in Epon. Both methods showed similar labelling features for both EBA-Ab and LH7.2 With ultra-thin cryosections there was labelling of the lamina densa and an undefined component of the sub-lamina densa region. With the en bloc technique, labelling of dermal ends of anchoring fibrils and of amorphous material recently defined as‘anchoring plaques’was evident. There was no labelling of the central banded portions of anchoring fibrils. We conclude that EBA-Ag is localized to the dermal ends of anchoring fibrils in addition to the lamina densa and possibly anchoring plaques, and thus has the same distribution as the carboxy terminus of type VII collagen.

Notes: We have successfully attained low-noise and high-power operation in GaAlAs lasers by applying high reflectivity facet coating approach to nonabsorbing mirror lasers. High reflectivity coating is used to reduce feedback induced noise coming from hopping between the diode cavity modes and between the external cavity modes. A nonabsorbing mirror structure is used to obtain high-power operation by suppressing mirror degradation and catastrophic optical damage effectively even with the use of high reflectivity coating. Nonabsorbing mirror lasers with the front facet reflectivity 50% showed the relative intensity noise level less than −130 dB/Hz at 3 mW under 0%–10% optical feedback and showed the cw output power as high as 50 mW in fundamental spatial mode operation. Under 30-mW cw operation at 50 °C, on the other hand, obvious degradation has not been observed over 4000 h in the nonabsorbing mirror lasers with 50% front facet reflectivity. Thus the present laser is useful as a low-noise source at a low-power level and also as a high-power source with high reliability.

Notes: High-pressure Raman studies up to 17 GPa have been made on solid D2S at room temperature. Features of vibron and phonon modes indicate a pressure-induced phase transition near 10 GPa. In the orientationally disordered phase I between 0.5 and 10 GPa, the symmetric stretching mode ν1 shows a red-shift in frequency (dν1/dP=−6.0 cm−1/GPa). By comparing with recent studies of solid H2S, the deuterium isotope effects are investigated for vibrational properties and phase transitions of D2S under ultrahigh pressures.

Notes: A new counting system for charged particles, which is suitable for the counting of pulse trains arriving in a short time, was constructed. The system is composed of a microchannel-plate intensifier, a CCD camera, a frame buffer, a particle counter, and a personal computer. Ion (or electron) pulses incident on the microchannel plate are amplified and then converted to photoradiating spots on a fluorescent screen. The image of the bright spots on the screen is taken by the camera and stored in the frame buffer. The computer processes the stored data and counts the number of bright spots. The performance of the system was examined by applying it to the detection of ions generated by a pulse laser. More than 300 photoions generated by one laser pulse (pulse width: 30 ns) were successfully counted, indicating that the peak counting rate of the system exceeds 1010 cps.

Notes: We have newly developed a 350 μm long cavity GaAlAs laser with nonabsorbing mirror buried twin ridge substrate structure, in order to obtain highly reliable high power single mode operation. It is found that the long cavity stabilizes lateral mode at powers higher than conventional maximum values because the carrier density is reduced to well suppress spatial hole-burning effect. The fundamental spatial mode operation is confirmed up to 210 mW and the maximum output power as high as 380 mW is obtained. The lifetime at 100 and 200 mW at 25 °C are expected to be 170 000 and 24 000 h, respectively, from the aging test results.

Notes: We have examined the character and carcinogenic properties of the normal-appearing epidermis overlying basal cell carcinomas by immunohistochemical methods, employing a series of monoclonal antibodies. The labelling index was significantly increased in the atrophic epidermis overlying basal cell carcinomas (solid type, n=20). compared with the epidermis overlying or adjacent to squamous cell carcinoma (n=20). keratoacanthoma (n= 10). dermatofibroma (n=10), neurofibroma (n= 10). soft fibroma (n=10). pyogenic granuloma (n=10) and cutaneous leiomyoma (n=5). Cells which expressed epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor were detected in all layers of the epidermis over the basal cell carcinomas, hut not the other tumours. Basement membrane-related antigens, including bullous pemphigoid antigen and GB3 antigen, were decreased in the epidermis. AEl. the monoclonal antibody against basal cell keratin, reacted with the uppermost layers of the normal-appearing epidermis overlying the basal cell carcinomas. ICAM-1 expression was very weak in the overlying epidermis. The dermis subjacent to the proliferating epidermis showed staining for transforming growth factor-α (TGF-α). strong positive PECAM-1 staining of endothelium. and numerous HLA-DR-positive cells. From these results, we suggest that the proliferative activity in the epidermis overlying basal cell carcinomas is not a state induced by the dermal infiltrate, but represents carcinogenic activity of the epidermis.

Notes: Paraneoplastic pemphigus, a recently identified disease entity, is associated with autoantibodies against a variety of epidermal proteins including desmoplakins I and II, and the 230-kDa bullous pemphigoid (BP) antigen. We report an 84-year-old Japanese man who had typical clinical and histopathological features of BP, but in whom indirect immunofluorescence, using normal human skin as the substrate, revealed concomitant serum antibasement membrane zone and antikeratinocyte cell surface autoantibodies. His serum showed reactivity similar to that which is seen with antidesmoplakin monoclonal antibody on immunofluorescence of cardiac muscle and urinary bladder. With immunoblotting, using various antigen sources, the patient's serum reacted with desmoplakins I and II. and with both the 230- and 180-kDa BP antigens. Immunogold electron microscopy also indicated the presence of antidesmoplakin antibodies. Although the significance of the antidesmoplakin antibodies in this patient is unknown, the findings in this case may provide an insight into understanding the occurrence of antidesmoplakin antibodies in paraneoplastic pemphigus.
