Abstract It is illustrated how a one-dimensional, time-dependent form of orthogonal decomposition can be employed to effectively smooth spatial-temporal velocity profile data to remove irregularities introduced during data acquisition, while retaining the dominant profile characteristics. This essential filtering feature of orthogonal decomposition is employed to establish smoothed velocity profile sequences for a turbulent boundary layer flow. Establishment of the dominant eigenmodes (up to the first nine eigenmodes) of the flow as well as the effect of the filtering process on time-mean statistics are illustrated.
