Notes: Two patients became infested with Gnathostoma nipponicum after eating raw loach-fish they had caught in a rice field in central Japan. A fragment of Gnathostoma was found in a biopsy from one of them. The sera of both patients reacted with Gnathostoma antigen using indirect immunofluorescence. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on blocks of the paraffin-embedded parasite sample and the viscera of a fish from the same rice field. The risk of eating raw freshwater fish is discussed.

Notes: The quasi-epitaxial growth of vacuum-deposited films of diacetylenes on various substrates, including uniaxially aligned polymer surfaces formed with rubbing treatment or Langmuir–Blodgett technique, is reported. The oriented polydiacetylene (PDA) films are readily obtained from these monomer films using photopolymerization. Highly oriented PDA films with excellent optical qualities have been obtained on rubbed polyethylene terephthalate surfaces. The typical dichroic ratio of these oriented PDA films is more than 100:1. This ratio is high enough to permit the application of these films to optical waveguide devices. The method for obtaining these highly oriented PDA films is described in detail. In addition, the structure, the morphology, and the optical anisotropy of these PDA films is examined by x-ray and electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and other optical means.

Notes: A technique for evaluating second-order nonlinear optical materials in powder form is described. The power of the second-harmonic wave generated with the evanescent wave (SHEW) loosely depends on the phase matchability of material. The largest element of the nonlinear optical coefficient can be estimated from the SHEW power, regardless of the phase matchability of the material in a bulk crystal, even when powder crystals are used as the sample. The sample setting condition that gives appropriate repeatability is obtained, and the accuracy of this measurement is also discussed. Several well-known materials are measured using this technique, and the results are compared with other works.

Notes: The second-harmonic generation with evanescent wave technique was used to measure the efficiency of second-harmonic generation of an organic colored powder that absorbs the second-harmonic wave, and it was compared to the electro-optic coefficient. The refractive index of the sample at the second-harmonic frequency is complex. The effective refractive index was obtained by measuring reflectivity at the interface between the sample and the prism. This technique is potentially useful for surveying electro-optic materials.

Notes: A new method of measuring second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency using powder crystals is proposed. The second harmonic, which is generated by the evanescent wave under total reflection conditions, is phase matched for every element of the second-order optical nonlinear coefficient, whether each element is phase matchable in a bulk crystal or not. Observing this phase-matched second-harmonic power gives the SHG efficiency, regardless of the phase matchability in a bulk crystal, even if powder crystals are used as a sample.

Notes: Summary We examined the osteogenesis process in transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-treated neonatal and adult rats, aiming to investigate the age difference in the effect of TGF-β1 on mesenchymal cell differentiation. Recombinant human (rh) TGF-β1 (20 and 200 ng) was injected onto the outer periostea of the right side of the parietal bone of each rat once a day for 1–12 days starting at the age of either 1 day or 12 weeks. On the day after the final injection, the calvaria was excised and evaluated histologically. In the neonates, the 12-day treatment with rhTGF-β1 increased the number of osteoprogenitor cells, resulting in intramembranous ossification. In the adult rats, rhTGF-β1 induced differentiation of chondrocytes. Cartilage masses were surrounded by mesenchymal cells, which would differentiate into chondrocytes. The cartilage matrix was partially calcified, with chondrocytes buried therein. In the calcified matrix, marrow cavities containing some multinuclear osteoclasts were formed. These findings indicate that rhTGF-β1 stimulated the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into chondrocytes and produced the cartilaginous matrix. rhTGF-β1 induced intramembranous ossification of the parietal bone in neonatal rats, and it induced enchondral ossification in adults. This result suggests that the different responses of mesenchymal cells in the periosteum to rhTGF-β1 may depend on the age of the animals used: namely, they may reflect the respective osteogenic stages of modeling and remodeling.

Notes: Abstract Proteolytic activities in extracts of sea urchin eggs were examined using SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate)-polyacrylamide gels. In the unfertilized eggs, proteases were detected as bands corresponding to the molecular weights of 40 kD and 26 kD on the gelatin gel, and 35 kD and 30 kD on the casein gel. Using various protease inhibitors, it was found that 40 kD, 30 kD, and 26 kD are chymotrypsin-like proteases and that 35 kD is a trypsin-like protease. The activity of the 40 kD chymotrypsin-like protease was found to be almost completely lost after insemination.

Notes: Abstract Solubility of naphthalene in water was measured at 25°C and pressures up to 200 MPa. The solubility decreased with increasing pressure. From the pressure coefficient of the solubility, the volume change ΔV accompanying the dissolution was estimated as 13.8±0.4 cm 3 -mol −1 . Further we estimated the volume change ΔV CH accompanying hydrophobic hydration as −0.1±0.6 cm 3 -mol −1 using the ΔV value, the molar volume of crystalline naphthalene, and the partial molar volume of naphthalene in n-heptane. This ΔV CH is much larger (i.e., less negative) than that for hydrophobic hydration of alkyl-chain compounds and suggests that the hydration structure of naphthalene differs from that of alkyl-chain compounds.
