Notes: A theoretical formulation of electron pulse propagation in quantum wire structures with mesoscopic scale cross sections is presented, assuming quantum ballistic transport of electron wave packets over a certain characteristic length. As typical mesoscopic structures for realizing coherent electron transmission, two traveling-wave configurations are considered: straight quantum wire waveguides and quantum wire bend structures (quantum whispering galleries). To estimate temporal features of the pulse during propagation, the walk off, the dispersion, and the pulse coherence lengths are defined as useful characteristic lengths. Numerical results are shown for ultrashort pulse propagation through rectangular wire waveguides. Effects due to an external electric field are discussed as well.

Notes: Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) that propagate along a bent dielectric waveguide with two-dimensional field confinement are analyzed with a self consistent field approximation (weighted index theory). WGMs are quasi-modes (leaky modes) with their field shape distorted toward the outermost boundary of a bend. Numerical results are shown for the modes in an optical embedded channel waveguide whose center of curvature is on an arbitrary location. Calculation of the leakage loss is included as well.

Notes: Abstract Dehydrogenation of 2-trimethylsilyl-1-propanol (1) was carried out with horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (HLADH, EC 1.1.1.1). It was found that the dehydrogenation of 1 proceeded enantioselectively with only HLADH and a catalytic amount of NAD+ due to in-situ NAD+ regeneration based on a specific property of β-carbonylsilanes. That is, (+)-1 was enantioselectively dehydrogenated by HLADH to 2-trimethylsilyl-1-propanal, which was spontaneously degraded by addition of water into trimethylsilanol and n-propanal. Then, NAD+ was regenerated through HLADH-catalyzed reduction of n-propanal to n-propanol. On the other hand, dehydrogenation of the carbon analogue of 1 was negligible with a catalytic amount of NAD+, indicating that the in-situ NAD+ regeneration was not available without the specific property of organosilicon compounds. Other primary β-hydroxysilanes having different substituents on the chiral center or on the silicon atom were also found to serve as substrates in enantioselective dehydrogenation by HLADH with this novel NAD+ regeneration system. Chiral recognition of HLADH toward primary alcohols is also discussed.

Notes: A solution strategy is proposed and implemented for taking advantage of the hierarchical structure of linear equation sets arising from the p-type finite element method using a hierarchical basis function set. The algorithm dynamically branches to either direct or iterative solution methods. In. the iterative solution branch, the substructure of the finite element equation set is used to generate a lower order preconditioner for a preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. The convergence rate of the PCG algorithm is monitored to improve the heuristics used in the choice of the preconditioner. The robustness and efficiency of the method are demonstrated on a variety of three dimensional examples utilizing both hexahedral and tetrahedral mesh discretizations. This strategy has been implemented in a p-version finite element code which has been used in an industrial environment for over two years to solve mechanical design problems.

Notes: New basis functions and solution procedures for p-version finite element analysis are described. They are used in a highly efficient p-version finite element solver for linear elastostatics and dynamics, which has been used in an industrial environment for over two years. Using two sample applications it is shown that, using the techniques proposed here, p-version finite element analysis can have a substantially lower computational cost, for given accuracy, than standard finite element methods. This makes the industrial applicability of p-version finite element analysis much wider than is commonly believed.
