An in vitro method for characterization of water retention behaviour of emollients was developed. The human skin is imitated with the aid of a polytetrafluoro ethylene membrane and the degree of water vapour evaporation after impregnation with different emollients is determined. Results obtained from different studies under changing conditions indicate that this is a precise and efficient method which is easy to perform with very simple equipment. It allows the generation of data for the characterization of emollients as an aid for skin care product formulation.
