Notes: Abstract A family is reported in which a 29-year-old woman showed the clinical features of myotonic dystrophy while her 26-year-old brother presented with the clinical picture of limb girdle syndrome. In the affected female, direct genetic testing for the specific myotonic dystrophy mutation on chromosome 19 revealed abnormal expansion of a repeat unit containing the three nucleotides cytosine, thymine, and guanine (CTG) — typical for myotonic dystrophy — while her diseased brother displayed two normal alleles. This supports the hypothesis of the extremely rare occurrence of two clinically and genetically different myopathies in one family. Genetic analysis of six other family members showed that the father of the diseased siblings as well as all of his three brothers and sisters had a pathological CTG repeat expansion, and that the other two family members tested had a normal allelic pattern. The number of CTG repeats in the diseased women was approximately tenfold higher than in her asymptomatic relatives who revealed an abnormal allelic pattern. The increase in CTG repeats with transmission to a subsequent generation in this family was paralleled by a dramatic increase in the severity of myotonic dystrophy.

Notes: Abstract From July 1989 to June 1991 135 discs on 129 patients were treated, in about twothirds at level L4/5 and at the remaining one third L5/S1.15% (n = 2) failed technically. Sixty eight patients are in the 1-year follow-up. Average age was 41 years (range 16–68 years). Average pain duration was 12 months, and average aspiration time was 25.8 min (range 15–45 min). All patients had contained disc lesions, suffered from radicular symptoms and had not responded to conservative treatment. 67,1% (group A, n =45) had a failure rate of 17,8%. Patients with associated degenerations (group B, n = 7) had a failure rate of 35,3%. 80% of the patients with recurrent radicular symptoms (group C, interval patients, n = 6) were free of symptoms. Re herniation rate in all patients was 2.9%, and the laminectomy rate 4.4%. No major complications were noted. Treated disc level, patient aage, aspirated nucleus material and CT changes revealed no correlation to clinical success. Patients with associated degenerations (group B) as wellas those with longer pain duration and larger contained disc lesions had a significantly worse outcome.

Notes: Summary Monitoring cerebral blood flow during focal ischaemia and reperfusion with established techniques such as hydrogen clearance and autoradiography is difficult. Laser Doppler flowmetry is a new technique, it allows one to continuously measure blood flow in small tissue samples. The objective of this study was to compare laser Doppler flowmetry with hydrogen clearance using a new single fiber probe to obtain measurements in deep brain structures and then to show the temporal profile of cerebral blood flow during focal ischaemia and after reperfusion. First, the single fiber laser Doppler method was compared with the hydrogen clearance method in ten Wistar rats. Second, focal cerebral ischaemia was induced in fifteen Wistar rats using a model of middle cerebral artery occlusion based on the intravascular insertion of a nylon suture; reperfusion occurred after withdrawal of the suture. The laser Doppler probe was placed in the lateral caudatoputamen, and local cerebral blood flow was measured continuously before and during occlusion as well as after reperfusion. The relative blood flow values obtained by the laser Doppler method and the hydrogen clearance method showed a good correlation (r=0.76) and a linear relationship. A rapid decrease in laser Doppler flowmetry to 42±16% of former baseline values was seen with occlusion of the middle cerebral artery; during occlusion cerebral blood flow remained at this level. Reperfusion resulted in a heterogeneous pattern of cerebral blood flow as laser Doppler flowmetry values ranged from 25% to 134% of baseline values. The effects of middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion on cerebral blood flow can be monitored on-line with laser Doppler flowmetry. Our findings suggest that this method, with the high spatial and temporal resolution characteristics of its new single fiber probe, allows one to continuously measure microcirculatory blood flow in deep brain structures.

Notes: Liquid phase epitaxy of GaAs from Bi melt was studied for growth temperatures between 670–750(open circle)C. The layers were characterized by Van der Pauw and photoluminescence measurements. All epitaxial layers were n-type and exhibit low compensation and electron mobilities up to 6×104 cm2/V s at 77 K. A gradual increase in the n-type doping was observed with growth temperature. Intentional doping of GaAs with Sn leads to a Sn distribution coefficient ∼60 times larger for the Bi melt in comparison to the Ga melt. Extremely low compensation of the Sn-doped layers (K≤0.1 for Nd=2.5×1017 cm−3) is obtained.

Notes: We discuss defects created by focused Ga ion beam implantation in GaAs or AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures using deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). A novel contact configuration which is sensitive to defects located at the boundary between implanted and unperturbed regions at a well-defined depth is presented. The DLTS spectra for these samples are dominated by a peak with an activation energy of Ea=0.38 eV. The results show that this peak is associated with implantation-induced damage independent of the ion species. The defect is also found in a sample with Schottky contacts on top of a Ga-implanted GaAs layer.

Notes: By photoluminescence and by Zeeman spectroscopy we study the characteristic 4f luminescence transition 3H5 → 3H6 at 1.0 eV of thulium in gallium arsenide which has been reported recently. It turns out that optically active Tm3+, which is present in mainly one specific type of center, does not occupy a simple substitutional lattice site. The results show a considerable tetragonal crystal field. The excitation mechanism of the 1.0-eV luminescence is investigated by photoluminescence excitation. The 3H5 → 3H6 is pumped most efficiently by trapping of free excitons.
