Notes: The radial electric field is driven to positive value by off-axis second harmonic electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in the Compact Helical System [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1988, Nice (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. II, p. 411]. The observed positive electric field is associated with the outward particle flux enhanced with ECH. The enhanced particle flux triggered by the production of the electrons accelerated perpendicularly to the magnetic field with ECH results in the change of the electric field.

Notes: Summary Encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) is a new surgical operation for childhood moyamoya disease, and its effects have been studied by comparing pre-and postoperative angiograms in 27 patients. The development of collaterals from the external carotid arterial system into the territory of the middle cerebral artery was excellent in 16 of 54 cerebral hemispheres after EDAS, good in 25, and poor in 13. The development of collaterals after EDAS increased as the stenotic process in the internal carotid artery on preoperative angiograms increased except in the most advanced cases, where it seemed to decrease in comparison with the group with middle grade stenosis. After EDAS, not only the superficial temporal artery, but also the adjacent middle meningeal artery participated in forming collateral pathways. Furthermore, decrease of abnormal net-like vessels was observed when there was good to excellent development of collateral vessels. Stenotic lesions in the internal carotid and posterior cerebral arteries were often seen to progress, indicative of the rapidly progressive nature of childhood moyamoya disease. These results appear to suggest that EDAS should be performed as early as possible in childhood moyamoya disease before the occurrence of an irreversible ischaemic state and/or permanent neurological defects.

Notes: Abstract Composite films of metals and dielectrics attracted considerable attention in the past for their novel optical and mechanical properties which can be tailored precisely by changing their structure and composition. In this work we present a probe into a related but hitherto unexplored field of composites where metal is combined with molecular semiconductor. As model materials we chose free-base phthalocyanine and copper. Films were prepared by simultaneous deposition of copper and free-base phthalocyanine in the dual ICB system. An answer to two basic questions was sought after: 1) does the copper combine with freebase phthalocyanine to form a copper phthalocyanine complex, 2) what is the structure of the films if there is non-stoichiometric surplus of copper in the films? We report results of structural study by a transmission electron microscope. Optical behaviour of the composite was characterized by optical reflectance and transmittance measurement in UV/VIS/NIR range and complemented by FT IR spectra.

Notes: An ionized cluster beam (ICB) source was used to deposit A1 onto two types of silicon oxides. One was a thermal oxide generated by steam oxidation of Si at 900°C. The other was a P-doped oxide deposited on Si at 425°C. During Al deposition, 60 μm diameter wires were held at the substrates to serve as masks. After A1 deposition, the wires were removed and the masked areas were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by scanning Auger microprobe (SAM). The ICB source was operated at 0, 3 and 6 kV accleration voltages. The substrates were held at 80, 200 and 400°C during A1 depositions. The A1 deposition rate averaged 24 nm min.-1 The chamber pressure during deposition was 3 × 10-4 Pa. The diffusion distance of A1l under a mask edge was determined from the SEM micrographs and SAM line scans. The maximum diffusion distance occurred at 200°C for both substrates, with the exception of the 0 kV A1 beam deposited on the low-temperature oxide (LTO). On the high-temperature oxide (HTO), the maximum diffusion distance was 29 μm at 6 kV acceleration voltage. The minimum diffusion distance was 8 μm at 70-80°C on the LTO for acceleration voltages of 0 and 3 kV.
