Notes: The transmissive Fabry–Perot interference peaks of a filled twisted nematic (TN) cell as a function of wavelength, from 400 to 600 nm and from 1100 to 2000 nm, have been used for the determination of the cell gap. Theoretical formulations have been developed to calculate the effective indices of refraction including the dispersive effect, as well as the twist geometry of the liquid-crystal medium for both the ordinary and extraordinary waves. When the light passes through the TN medium an even number of times caused by the interfacial reflections, the equations governing the effective indices of refraction are well behaved. For an odd number of passes, the validity of these equations is restricted to a region adjacent to the Mauguin limit. The cell gaps were derived from the measured effective optical paths and the calculated indices of refraction, which include the dispersive effect with or without the twisted deformation of the liquid-crystal medium. A general equation has also been obtained to derive the TN cell gap from the effective optical paths, which are measured by using the split-beam interferometric method.

Notes: A simulated thin-film transistor (TFT) circuit has been built to drive the twisted nematic (TN) cell for the measurements of charge retention and the transmission versus peak voltage applied to the drain electrode of the simulated TFT using the gate pulse width as a parameter. The established rule that the transmission of the TN cell depends only on the rms voltage applied to the cell has been confirmed by calculating the rms voltage of the charge retention curves in correlation with the measured transmissions. The deviation of the decaying charge retention curves from the exponential behavior has been observed and can be qualitatively explained by a combination of the dielectric and transport properties of nematic liquid-crystal medium.

Notes: Based on the 4×4 matrix method for inhomogeneous uniaxial media by Berreman [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 62, 502 (1972); 63, 1374 (1973)] and by Wöhler et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 5, 1554 (1988)], a simple method to eliminate the Fabry–Perot effect caused by optical discontinuities at the input and output interfaces has been developed. It facilitates an easy comparison between the results of the Jones matrix method and the 4×4 matrix method without the time-consuming spectral average for the latter. Modeling the case of liquid-crystal displays with incoherent back-light sources, this new method will either improve the accuracy with similar computation time or save computation time with similar accuracy, as compared to the ordinary "faster'' 4×4 matrix method.

Notes: Recent experimental results indicate that bistability is difficult to achieve in surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid-crystal devices with high spontaneous polarization (Ps) materials. We formulated the basic equations to analyze the bistability as a function of the conductivity and thickness of the alignment layers using Ps as a parameter. It is found that a threshold value of the conductivity, which approximately scales with both the thickness and Ps, exists to achieve good bistability. Numerical results are given to provide important guidances for choosing the alignment layer materials to obtain excellent bistability using high Ps materials.

Notes: Summary Between March 1991 and February 1992 serial serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured prospectively for three weeks in 57 consecutive patients with fractures of long bones, and also in 11 patients who had undergone primary total hip or knee arthroplasty. A semi-quantitative capillary floculation method was used for measuring the CRP level. The highest values were usually recorded 2–3 days after trauma or operation, and the CRP was nearly normal by three weeks. In the patients with long bone fractures the amplitude of CRP response was affected by the type of treatment. Lower values were observed in those patients treated conservatively than in those who underwent operation, but the profile of CRP response was similar, regardless of the type of treatment. The CRP response was also affected by the severity of the trauma in conservatively treated patients, but in those who underwent operation the CRP response was similar, regardless of the severity of the injury. In patients with primary total hip or knee arthroplasty the pattern of CRP response after operation was similar to that in the patients with long bone fractures who underwent surgical treatment. Awareness of the natural course of the CRP response after fracture and arthroplasty may help in the diagnosis of early post-traumatic and postoperative complications, especially infections.
