Notes: The temperature dependence of phase stability for tin-modified lead zirconate titanate solid solution ceramics Pb(0.98)Nb0.02[(Zr1−x, Snx)1−yTiy]1−zO3 (PZST) was investigated by hot-stage transmission electron microscopy. Compositions studied included, a material that was antiferroelectric (AFE) at room temperature with x=0.42 and y=0.04, and a material that was ferroelectric (FE) at room temperature with x=0.43 and y=0.08 (abbreviated as PZST 42/4/2 and 43/8/2, respectively). PZST 42/4/2 was found to exhibit a sequence of phase transformations on heating of AFE–multicell cubic (MCC)–simple cubic (SC), whereas PZST 43/8/2 had a sequence of FE-AFE-MCC-SC. Previously referred to F spots (i.e., 1/2[111] superlattice spots) were observed in all four phases. The diffraction intensities for the F spots decreased with increasing temperature, and eventually disappeared above 300 °C. Electron diffraction confirmed the presence of the MCC phase which was characterized by the existence of weak 1/2[110] superlattice spots in the temperature region between the AFE and SC phases. In each composition the AFE phase was characterized by arrays of one-dimensional antiphase domain boundaries and (1/x)[110] superlattice spots. The modulation wavelength for the superlattice spots was found to be a strong function of temperature and was incommensurate with the lattice. The thermal stability of phases in the crystalline solution PZST system is discussed in terms of the observed microstructural features.

Notes: An attractive-mode atomic force microscope is described in which the cantilever is held orthogonally with respect to the sample. The technique utilizes a linear differential optical detection scheme for the cantilever vibrations. In this design, the cantilever end is not bent to form a tip. This geometry substantially reduces the possibility of spontaneous jump-to-contact of the tip onto the sample, allowing the tip/sample separation to be set essentially to any desired value. Relatively large- and small-scale results are presented on imaging a smear of red blood cells, demonstrating the resolution and sensitivity.

Notes: A previously reported multistep hot filament chemical vapor deposition process for nucleating diamond directly on nickel substrates has been further refined to increase the nucleation density and improve the orientation of diamond films. The process employed heavy seeding of both 〈100〉 and 〈111〉 oriented single crystal Ni surfaces with diamond powders to enhance the nucleation density of diamond films. The deposition conditions were adjusted to allow for 〈100〉 and 〈111〉 orientations to grow on similarly oriented substrates to form nearly complete films with grain boundaries being eliminated. Thus, the technique holds promise for developing heteroepitaxial diamond films for microelectronics applications.

Notes: We present the design and describe the operation of a scanning probe microscope which simultaneously provides the attractive mode force and near-field optical images of objects. In this technique, the force signal is used to track the topography, thus allowing the optical signal primarily to show variations in transmissivity. A number of results are presented on the application of the technique to imaging different samples.

Notes: We present an absolute measurement of a two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient of C60 thin film at 633 nm. Large values of β≈4.4 cm/W were determined. A nearly resonant TPA transition around the 3.76 eV absorption region was discussed.

Notes: Previously, we showed that the Humhallr rearranged gene was almost identical to the consensus amino acid sequence of several G6 idiotype-positive rheumatoid factor (RF) heavy chains, and to the VH gene-encoded region of the fetally expressed 51PI cDNA. The finding led us to suggest that the ha llr-corresponding germline gene encodes the heavy chains of many human IgM RFs. We now report the isolation of the proposed germline gene, designated Humhv 1051; it is identical to the consensus sequence of the G6 heavy chain V regions. During this experiment, we also isolated unexpectedly an additional VHl gene, termed Humhv 1051K; it differs from hv1051 by one amino acid residue. Importantly, hv1051K is identical to Humha 113, the rearranged VHl gene of a natural anti-cardiolipin antibody.

Notes: Summary A total of 289 accessions of cultivated barley were assayed for ribosomal DNA (rDNA) polymorphisms. These accessions comprised four independent samples: (1) 79 entries from China, (2) 59 accessions from Ethiopia, (3) 59 entries from Tibet and (4) 92 entries representing 36 barley growing countries of the world (referred to as “world sample”). In all, 17 rDNA phenotypes (genotypes) were observed, which were composed 10 alleles at two rDNA loci, Rrn1 and Rrn2. The world sample contained the largest number of phenotypes and alleles and also demonstrated the highest level of diversity. Ribosomal DNA phenotypes 104, 112 and 107, 112 occurred at high frequencies worldwide. Allele 112 was the predominant allele of Rrn1 in all four samples, and 104 and 107 were the two major alleles of Rrn2 worldwide. The distributions of rDNA genotypes and alleles demonstrated a clear differentiation of two distinct barley groups: an Oriental group represented by the samples from China and Tibet, which is characterized by allele 107 at the Rrn2 locus (rDNA phenotype 107, 112); and an Occidental group, represented by Ethiopian and world samples, which is comprised mostly of allele 104 at the Rrn2 locus (rDNA phenotype 104, 112). The results also raised new questions concerning the phylogeny and evolution of cultivated barley.

Notes: Abstract Most invasive pseudallescheriasis infections have occurred in immunocompromised patients. The case of an immunocompetent patient with invasive pulmonary pseudallescheriasis and subsequent contiguous extension to the ribs and spine is reported. Aspergillosis was mistakenly diagnosed on histopathologic examination of the debrided tissue. Culture of the debrided tissue yieldedPseudallescheria boydii.

Notes: Summary We report a 45-year-old female who had symptomatic gastrointestinal involvement, eosinophils in the cellular infiltrate, and who proved to havel-tryptophan-associated eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. This case illustrates that gastrointestinal disease can be a major, seemingly primary clinical presentation in this syndrome, and that a drug history, specificallyl-tryptophan, needs to be included in the differential diagnosis of “eosinophilic gastroenteritis.”
