    Notes: Summary The occurrence and topographic analysis of granulovacuolar degeneration (GVD) in the hippocampal cortex of mentally normal controls (75 cases) and patients with Alzheimer's dementia (AD; 17 cases which included Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia of Alzheimer type), multi-infarct dementia (MID; 16 cases), Pick's disease (PD; 5 cases) and atypical dementia [5 cases; non-Alzheimer, non-Pick dementia with Fahr's syndrome (NANPDF)] were investigated. GVD was rarely found in control cases below the age of 60 years. In elderly normal brains, the statistically most representative ranking order of predilection for GVD (in decreasing severity) was: in the 60 s, CA1〉prosubiculum 〉CA2 (no GVD was found in the CA3 and CA4); in the 70 s, CA1〉prosubiculum 〉CA2 〉CA3〉CA4; in the 80 s, CA1〉prosubiculum 〉CA2〉CA3〉CA4; in the 90s, CA1〉prosubiculum 〉CA2〉CA3〉CA4. In the brains of demented patients, the rank order for GVD was: for AD, CA1 〉CA2〉CA3〉 prosubiculum 〉CA4; for MID, CA1 〉 prosubiculum 〉CA2〉CA3〉CA4; for PD, CA1 〉CA2〉CA3〉 prosubiculum 〉CA4; and for atypical dementia (NANPDF), CA1〉CA2〉 prosubiculum 〉CA3〉CA4. The similarity of the predilection to ranking order was noted both in normal aged subjects and in MID as well as both in AD and in PD. The qualitative investigation disclosed that the affected neurons with GVD in the cases of AD were found in all the examined areas outside the hippocampus (gyrus praecentralis, temporal and occipital cortex, globus pallidus, amygdaloid nuclei, mammillary bodies, medial thalamic nuclei, red nuclei, nuclei basalis of Meynert, dentate nuclei and inferior olivary nuclei) and, contrary to the results in AD, there were no affected neurons with GVD in the cases of MID. The occurrence and distribution of GVD in demented patients were different in these respective disorders.

    Notes: Abstract Polyglucosan bodies (PGBs) in the brain of a 12-year-old Holstein cow exhibiting no signs of neurological abormality were examined by light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. PGBs were disseminated throughout the brain, especially in the pallidum, thalamus and cerebellum. Cow PGBs were found in the neuronal perikaryon and in the neuropil. These were round, slightly to severely basophilic, and were strongly positive for the periodic acid-Schiff reaction. The cow PGBs were immunoreactive for monoclonal antibodies raised against human polyglucosan. Electron microscopic analysis revealed that they were composed of branching filaments, glycogen granules and electrondense meterial. These findings indicate that cow PGBs closely resemble human or canine PGBs in Lafora's disease and PGBs found in aged animals that have been reported previously.

    Notes: Abstract Eight patients with a juvenile type of distal and segmental muscular atrophy of the upper extremities (DSMA), a type of cervical flexion myelophathy, were evaluated using MR imaging. In the neutral position there was no spinal cord compression, but in flexion the spinal cord was displaced anteriorly and was compressed by the posterior surfaces or margins of the vertebrae and/or any herniated disks in all cases. In flexion, compression of the cord was exaggerated in seven patients by the anterior displacement of the posterior margin of the thecal sac, which was accompanied by dilated posterior internal vertebral veins. In patients suspected of having DSMA, MR images made in flexion are regarded essential for verifying the diagnosis.

    Notes: Suppression of the sidetrack reading behavior is important in achieving⋅high track-density recording with a magnetoresistive head. In the present work, we investigate the sensitivity distribution profiles of MR heads through experimentation using a microtrack technique1 and computer simulation. Shielded, soft, adjacent-layer-biased MR heads with 3∼6−μm-wide tracks are used. The ends of the MR elements are coupled to antiferromagnetic or hard ferromagnetic films for domain control. In the simulation based on the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation,2 the magnetization configurations in the MR elements of the domain stabilizing films are calculated to analyze the sensitivity distribution. The measured sensitivity profiles in all cases have asymmetries that are reversed when the sensing current direction or the magnetization direction of the MR element is reversed. These results agree with the simulation. The asymmetries of sensitivity profiles are explained by the magnetic poles at the domain control film edges and at the transverse edges of the element which generate a diagonal demagnetizing field distribution in the sensing region.

    Notes: We examined 12 depressed tubular adenomas of the stomach pathologically and immunohistochemically in order to clarify the difference between the depressed type and the elevated type. Depressed tubular adenomas showed shallow mucosal depression and, of the 12, nine were endoscopically diagnosed as early gastric cancer. Histologically, the adenoma cells showed dysplasia in varying degree and focal adenocarcinoma occurred in two adenomas measuring over 2 cm. The mean height of the adenoma glands was 0.63 ± 0.31 mm in the 12 depressed adenomas and 1.32 ± 0.43 mm in 44 elevated adenomas, while the mean heights of the subjacent mucosa were 0.18 ± 0.19 mm and 1.07 ± 0.71 mm, respectively. Thus, depressed adenomas resulted from paucity of the mucosa subjacent to the adenoma glands and the height of the adenomatous glands was half that found in the elevated type. Goblet cells, a variety of endocrine cells and lysozyme-containing cells were found in nine, nine and eight depressed adenomas, respectively, in variable numbers. Hyperplasia of these cells was also detected in depressed adenomas showing mild or moderate dysplasia. Immunohistochemical examination revealed no difference in the phenotypic expression of adenoma cells as between the depressed and the elevated type.

    Notes: Co-CoO films, which are evaporated in the atmosphere of a small amount of O2, have large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and show excellent read-write (R-W) characteristics. With heat treatment, the microstructure of a film changed and the R-W characteristics were further improved.1,2 This result indicates that the microstructure of a film changed and the R-W characteristics were further improved.1,2 This result indicates that the microstructure of a film closely relates with the R-W characteristics as it does so for Co-Cr films. We measured the spin-echo spectra of a film having various magnetizations to investigate the relationships between R-W characteristics and film microstructure, because NMR is very sensitive to the slight changes of film microstructure.1 A strong absorption was observed at 223 MHz which is for α-Co. The intensity decreased drastically as the amount of oxygen in the films increased and very broad satellites appeared around 250 MHz, implying that Co atoms having a larger magnetic moment than that of α-Co exist for the films containing oxygen atoms. Further, heat treatment increased the absorption intensity at 223 MHz, which means that the internal stress or the lattice defects were removed. The R-W characteristics were found to relate with the absorption intensity. This result shows that the crystallinity of a film greatly influences the R-W characteristics of Co-CoO films.

    Notes: A new type of impregnated-electrode-type liquid-metal ion source, which eliminated the heating problem in the previous source, has been developed with multiple tip and reservoirs (TAR's). In the present ion source, the TAR's are connected electrically in series by modifying the TAR holding system. In order to achieve uniform heating of the TAR's, the materials of the knife-edged electrodes, which introduce the heating current to the TAR's, were examined. Tantalum electrodes exhibited better results as compared with the conventional Mo electrodes. Both of the two TAR's could be heated up to 700 °C with a heating power of 200 W. The maximum indium ion current of 9.1 mA was obtained from the four-TAR source with 40 emission points. Since the present ion current was limited by the current capacity of the extraction power supply, an ion current of more than 10 mA will be expected with a larger power supply. The results indicated that an ion current approximately proportional to the number of the emission points was obtained. This kind of ion source could be used as a general ion source in materials science.

    Notes: In order to study the effect of a multiturn input coil on superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) characteristics, the radio frequency (rf) properties of the coupling circuit between the SQUID coil and the input coil are studied. For the measurement of rf properties of the coupling circuit, the so-called expanded model of the coupling circuit using normal metals was adopted, which is shown to be very useful for this purpose. It is shown that the SQUID coil cannot be expressed by a simple inductance when the SQUID coil is coupled to the input coil, i.e., many resonant structures are observed in rf properties of the coupling circuit. It is also shown that the damping resistance is useful in suppressing the resonant structures. Using the experimental results, a circuit model of the SQUID coupled to the multiturn input coil is proposed.
