    Notes: Summary The primary goal of the present study was to examine the effects of improved glycaemic control associated with glipizide treatment on postprandial lipaemia in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients. The metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins of intestinal origin was assessed by measuring the retinyl palmitate content in plasma and the Svedberg flotation index (Sf) 〉400 and Sf 20–400 lipoprotein fractions. Fasting plasma glucose concentrations (14.5±0.5 vs 9.0±0.5 mmol/l), glycated haemoglobin levels (13.1± 0.6 vs 9.7±0.6 %), and daylong plasma glucose concentrations were all significantly lower after glipizide treatment (p〈0.001). The improvement in glycaemic control was associated with increases in insulin-mediated glucose uptake (p〈0.001) and plasma post-heparin lipoprotein and hepatic lipolytic activities (p〈0.02). Both fasting plasma triglyceride (3.09±0.51 vs 2.37± 0.34 mmol/l), and postprandial triglyceride concentrations (p〈0.05–0.001) were lower following glipizide treatment, associated with a significant fall in retinyl palmitate content in all three lipoprotein fractions (p〈0.02–0.001), with the most substantial decrease seen in the Sf 20–400 fraction. These data indicate that glipizide-induced improvement in glycaemic control was associated with changes in the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins of intestinal origin that would be anticipated to reduce risk of coronary heart disease in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients.     Notes: Forty-one cases of nasopharyngeal and 13 cases of nasal malignant lymphoma have been examined histologically and immunohistochemically. All of the cases were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; one case was of follicular type and the remaining 53 were of diffuse type. Large cell lymphoma comprised 48% of cases and most of the immunoblastic lymphomas showing pleomorphism occurred in the nose. Twenty-seven cases were of T-cell and 21 of B-cell phenotype. The predominance of T-cell lymphoma was due to an increased incidence of these in the nose, the T: B ratio of 3.33:1 contrasting with a 1:1.05 ratio in the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal lymphomas seem to show an intermediate incidence between the T-cell predominance in the nose and a B-cell predominance in the oropharynx. Since the large cell type of lymphoma was predominant, the differential diagnosis from undifferentiated carcinoma is important and is facilitated by the use of immunostaining methods.

    Notes: We investigate the optical properties of new "superlattice particles'' that can be made of precisely controlled metal-insulator layers fabricated by sputtering or evaporation techniques. We found that there are two limits to the reflectivity behavior corresponding to wide and narrow particles. In the narrow-particle limit, a series of sharply defined absorption peaks at frequencies controlled by the width is observed. In the wide-particle limit, most of the light incident on the particles will be absorbed. Materials of this type possess desirable infrared absorption characteristics and can be used for new polarization sensitive infrared absorbers and detectors.

    Notes: To observe the magneto-optic (MO) recording domains precisely it is necessary to erase noise and overcome poor contrast. By applying image averaging and subtracting nonmagnetic contrast in digital image processing system, the sharp domain image can be obtained. This is the first time the domain image has been combined with morphological signal processing. By using mathematical morphology in the processing algorithms, the nonmagnetical contrast (background image) can be generated from a real image directly. Subtracting it from the real image, the target domains can be segmented and enhanced.

    Notes: A new technique for bonding sulfur atoms to gallium arsenide surfaces is described. In this technique the surface is exposed to gas-phase atomic sulfur at 60–70 °C. The resulting surfaces were characterized by angle-dependent x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data show that, in contrast to passivation of GaAs by H2S at low temperatures, this technique yields a surface on which the sulfur is almost exclusively bonded only to gallium atoms.

    Notes: Abstract The receptivity of a laminar boundary layer developing on a flat plate was studied with two- and three-dimensional roughness elements. The layer was subjected to acoustic waves from speakers orientated perpendicular to the surface of the plate. Visualization of the transition patterns were obtained by heating temperature sensitive liquid crystals on the plate and observing the cooling patterns associated with the different flow regimes. Hot-wire data showed that the most amplified Tollmien-Schlichting waves dominated the downstream growth when the roughnesses were placed within the linearly unstable regime. The receptivity depended upon the size and aspect ratio of the three-dimensional roughness as predicted by Choudhari and Kerschen 1990.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation of a controllable artificial boundary layer transition by means of electro-acoustic generators was carried out in flat-plate boundary layers. The acoustic generators were flush mounted with the model surface in order to minimize local surface roughnesses which may cause flow instabilities in the laminar boundary layer. The dependence of the input power, pulse ratio, and input frequency of the acoustic generators on the transition threshold values of the input power were determined with surface hot films. In addition, the functional application of the acoustic generators for a controllable artificial boundary layer transition was examined qualitatively by flow visualizations applying the liquid crystal technique.

    Notes: Summary The X-gene product of human hepatitis B virus is a transacting transcriptional factor which activates a variety of heterologous viral and host promoters/enhancers. We have found that the X-gene product can significantly transactivate the regulatory sequences located at the 5′-upstream of the c-jun oncogene when a reporter plasmid containing the sequences was co-transfected to HepG2 cells with an X-gene expression plasmid. The results of mutational analysis indicate that the X-gene activation requires the AP-1 sequence of the c-jun gene. Furthermore, we also found that the X-gene is capable of activating the 5′-upstream sequence of the α-fetoprotein gene. There are at least two elements that respond to the X-gene transactivation. One is located in the sequences between −5100 and −2900, and the other is at the C/EBP site. Therefore, the X-gene activates the c-jun and α-fetoprotein genes through different host factors, namely AP-1 and C/EBP, respectively. The results of c-jun activation by the X-gene strongly support the previous hypothesis that the X-gene may play a critical role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.
