Notes: We report measurements of the temperature behavior of the electroclinic coupling coefficient c(T) and the inverse tilt susceptibility A(T), the principal phenomenological parameters determining the magnitude of the electroclinic effect in the chiral smectic A phase of the liquid crystal W317, a material which exhibits an anomalously large electroclinic effect with unusual thermal behavior. We find that c(T) decreases by ∼30% in response to a 40 °C increase in temperature. A(T) exhibits a mean field behavior at high temperature, increasing by a factor of 3 as temperature is increased over the range 40 °C〈T〈65 °C. However, below ∼40 °C, A(T) becomes nearly independent of temperature over a ∼10 °C range around room temperature. This A(T) behavior has not been previously found in electroclinic materials. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Inelastic light scattering from particle number density fluctuations was carried out on a suspension of 0.109 μ diam sulfonated polystyrene microspheres exhibiting coexisting colloidal liquid and body-centered-cubic single crystalline phases. Comparison of the first cumulants of the decay of the density–density correlation function in the two phases reveals that the wave vector dependence in the liquid exhibits many features in common with that for longitudinal 110 lattice vibrations in the crystal.

Notes: Small angle neutron scattering(SANS) is used to investigate the local order in aqueous, charge stabilized suspensions of 103 A(ring) diameter polystyrene latexspheres at ∼14 wt. % solids. These samples which evidence a close packed close packed structure in equilibrium are observed to undergo a transition to an amorphous order when sustaining a sufficiently large and steady shear. The shear melting phenomonology is different from that observed by light scattering for very dilute (0.16 wt. % solids) suspensions of polystyrene particles which form bcc lattices in equilibrium. Furthermore, neutron scattering reveals more detail than light scattering for concentrated suspensions and indicates a larger degree of three-dimensional ordering under steady shear flow than is implied by sliding layer models for similar systems.

Notes: The Gupta–Bleuler canonical quantization procedure for free massless gauge fields is applied to the Lagrangian potentials of arbitrary integer helicity. The supplementary conditions required to limit the particle states to the physical subspace of positive-definite metric and positive energy are explicitly set out using procedures that are uniform for all spins, bosonic and fermionic. The well-known lower-spin results (spins 1 and 2), where some of the arbitrary spin features are vacuous, arise as special cases.

Notes: Massless, D( j,0)⊕D(0, j), multispinor fields of arbitrary unmixed spin j are reduced by simple matrix-algebra methods to associated tensors and tensor–spinors. A generalized Majorana condition applied to the multispinors is seen to correspond to reality and Majorana conditions on the associated tensors and tensor–spinors, respectively. The symmetries of the latter are displayed explicitly for arbitrary spin. For spin-1, - (3)/(2) , -2, and - (5)/(2) the free-field gauge-invariant Lagrangian wave equations of Maxwell (spin-1), Rarita–Schwinger (spin- (3)/(2) ), Fierz–Pauli (spin-2), and spin- (5)/(2) are derived directly and in a uniform manner from the simpler equations of the unmixed spin reps strongly suggesting the method is extendable to arbitrary spin. Similar features of massive fields are briefly reviewed.

Notes: The nontrivially gauge-invariant Lagrangian field equations of arbitrary helicity are constructed directly by integration of the corresponding non-Lagrangian Poincaré field strengths based on the Lorentz irreps of unmixed spin. All the details of the gauge properties of the Lagrangian formulation of the free massless Poincaré irrep fields are derived systematically and uniformly for arbitrary spin from the very simple field-strength formulation as a direct consequence of an integration process. The gauge transformations, including the tracelessness of the gauge parameters, the form of the fermionic and bosonic potential field equations (first-, and second-order, respectively), and the vanishing double trace of the higher-spin (≥ (7)/(2) ) potentials are all seen to be natural consequences of the integration of the classical equations for the field strengths without need for appeal to other requirements such as those of quantum field theory. Thus the equivalence (modulo gauge freedom and derivability from a Lagrangian) of the field strength and standard potential formulations of classical free fields are demonstrated explicitly, and uniformly for arbitrary helicity.

Notes: We provide direct evidence, using simultaneously total internal reflection and polarized optical microscopy, for the existence of two interface stabilized director n-polarization P orientation states at a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC)-solid interface. The states are separated by a first-order orientation transition, having n nearly parallel to the surface, opposite orientations of the component of P normal to the surface, with the state having P directed into the FLC being of lower energy. Any unswitched layer is less than 20 A(ring) in thickness.
