Notes: Abstract The50Cr(d, n)51Mn and54Fe(d, n)55Co reactions have been studied at an incident deuteron energy of 5.5 MeV. Angular distributions of neutron groups to a number of low-lying levels in the residual nuclei have been recorded. Time-of-flight techniques have been used to record neutron spectra. A liquid scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination property has been used as neutron detector. DWBA calculations have been performed and relative spectroscopic strengths determined for transitions with variousl p values. The ratios between spectroscopic strengths forl p =3 andl p =1 transitions were found to be considerably larger than corresponding ratios obtained from the (3He,d) reactions. Two-step stripping processes competing with the direct stripping process are suggested as explanation of the discrepancy between the (d, n) and the (3He,d) results.

Notes: Abstract Gamma-ray measurements have been performed on biofuel samples using a planar intrinsic Ge detector. The samples were first homogenized and then packed into 90 ml plastic tubs. The radiation from each sample was usually measured for 1 to 2 days. The intensity of the 63.3 keV γ-ray in234Th was used to determine the amount of238U present. The amount of235U can be determined from the intensity of the 143.8 keV γ-ray.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray decay of the 1658 keV resonance, which is a member of the isobaric analogues of the 1904 keV 3/2− level in44Ca, has been studied with a Ge(Li) detector. A number of gamma-ray transitions are described and associated with the decay of 15 levels between 1.50 and 3.05 MeV. These observations have made it possible to deduce spin and parity assignments to some of the levels. By comparing excited levels of43Sc and45Sc it has been possible to assign certain levels as members of one negative-parity band and two positive-parity bands withK π=1/2+ and 3/2+.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray spectra of several resonances in the45Sc(p, γ)46Ti reaction were measured using a 5 cm3 Ge(Li) detector. A thick target was bombarded with 1377 and 1660 keV protons, several resonances were therefore excited at each proton bombarding energy. The decay and energy of 30 excited levels were investigated. The intensity of all transitions to the ground state agrees within an error of about 9% with the total intensity of all transitions starting from the proton capture states, which indicates that low energy transitions between high-excited levels are of no importance. We have calculated a theoretical primary gamma-ray spectrum that fits the experimental averaged spectrum rather well.

Notes: Abstract Low-volume samplers collecting ambient aerosols in two size fractions have been used to collect radioactivity from the Chernobyl accident. The samplers were situated near light-houses on the east coast of Sweden and samples were collected during consecutive 12-hr periods. Activity concentrations of 95Zr, 95Nb, 103, 106Ru, 131I, 134, 136, 137Cs, 140Ba, 140La, 141,144Ce, and 239Np were measured with a Ge(Li) detector. The transportation time between Chernobyl and the two sampling sites is in good agreement with times calculated from air mass trajectories. The main part of the radioactivity was found on particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2 μm.

Notes: Abstract The results of a one-year study of the total air-borne14C effluents from two Swedish light-water reactors, one boiling water reactor (BWR) at Forsmark and one pressurized water reactor (PWR) at Ringhals, are presented. Air emitted from the stacks has been collected continuously over two-week periods and the14C content in the samples has been analysed using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The14C activity concentration in the air issuing from the stack of the PWR varied between 2 and 1132 Bq/m3 with a mean value of 200 Bq/m3, while from the BWR the activity concentration varied between 4 and 146 Bq/m3, with a mean value of 95 Bq/m3. The corresponding14C release rate was 0.27 TBq/GWel·year for the PWR and 0.48 TBq/GWel·year for the BWR. During the same period of time, for comparison, the14C activity in continuously collected air from the stack of the PWR was also measured by liquid scintillation counting. In most cases the results of these measurements were in fair agreement with the corresponding AMS results.
