    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a field study to assess the effect of increasing the frequency of split applications of N fertiliser on the pattern of plant uptake, soil N availability, and microbial biomass C and N. Measurements were taken during the growing season in different positions relative to young trees (Prunus avium L.) in an upland silvopastoral system in its first year after establishment. At fertiliser rates of 72 and 144 kg ha-1 N applied as NH4NO3, increasing the number of split applications increased N uptake by the pasture. Mineral forms of soil N measured 2 weeks after application indicated that residual NH inf4 sup+ -N and total mineral N were also greater in this treatment on certain dates. Soil NO inf3 sup- -N was positively correlated with the soil moisture content, and nitrification reached a maximum in early May and declined rapidly thereafter except within the herbicide-treated areas around the trees where soil moisture had been conserved. Results of the study suggest that high NO inf3 sup- -N in herbicide-treated areas was probably caused by mineralisation of grass residues and low uptake by the tree rather than by preferential urine excretion by sheep sheltering beside the trees. Mean microbial biomass C and N values of 894 and 213 kg ha-1, respectively, were obtained. Microbial C was slightly increased by the higher frequency of split applications at 144 kg ha-1 N and was probably related to the greater herbage production with this treatment. Microbial N was not significantly affected by the N treatments. Both microbial biomass C and N increased during the growing season, resulting in the net immobilisation of at least 45 kg ha-1 N which was later released during the autumn.

    Notes: Wiener-type products containing 5, 10 and 20% oat protein isolates (OPI), acid-hydrolyzed OPI or legume proteins were prepared and compared to an all-meat control. Cook yields progressively decreased with increases in the level of substitution, but there was no significant difference (p 〈 0.05) among samples containing the same amount of vegetable proteins. Wiener-type products containing acid-hydrolyzed OPI had significantly higher firmness and cohesiveness than those substituted with other vegetable proteins.

    Notes: The vapor deposition of Bi on Pt(111) at 110 and ∼600 K have been characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), thermal desorption mass spectroscopy (TDMS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and changes in the work function (Δφ). At 110 K Bi growth follows a layer-by-layer mechanism. At ∼600 K Bi fills the first monolayer (θBi(approximately-equal-to)0.56) relatively uniformly, followed by 3D island growth. Bi desorption is characterized by a large, coverage-dependent desorption energy, Edes =(81−34.2 θBi ) kcal mol−1, in the first monolayer, and zero-order kinetics with constant activation energy (Edes =53–56 kcal mol−1) for the multilayer. Many LEED patterns are observed within the first monolayer for both cold and hot substrates. Structural models for these are proposed which are consistent with coverages obtained by AES. Annealed structures show continuous compression of hexagonal Bi overlayers with increasing coverage, subject to mild substrate constraints. At 110 K and θBi 〉0.33, uniaxial compression is instead seen, due to an unsurmounted energy barrier. Weakly repulsive lateral Bi–Bi interactions (due to dipole repulsions) dominate submonolayer growth. These results for the semimetal Bi are intermediate in behavior between alkali and transition metal overlayers on Pt(111). This is consistent with the relative strengths of the surface dipole of these adsorbed metals.

    Notes: With a career that began at the University of Missouri in the early 1880s and culminated at the USDA in the 1930s, Beverly Galloway devoted his life to practical botany and agriculture. He became a driving force in the movement for "New Botany" during a period that stressed an experimental approach as well as new disciplines such as plant pathology. As administrator and scientist, he was arguably the single, most influential figure involved in the early growth and development of plant pathology and the plant sciences generally in the USDA. From assistant mycologist in the Section of Mycology to Chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry to Assistant Secretary of the USDA, Galloway displayed exceptional administrative acumen. His administrative and scientific skills were instrumental in laying the foundations for the science of plant pathology during its formative period in the United States.

    Notes: In a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery (n=91), a single intravenous infusion of ceruletide (2.5 ng kg−’min−1’for 1 hour) resulted in audible bowel sounds in 42/47 patients as opposed to 30/44 receiving placebo (P 〈 0.025). Excessive bowel sounds were noted in 16 patients in the ceruletide group and four receiving placebo (P 〈 0.01). Significantly more patients (P 〈 0.01) in the ceruletide group (22/45 versus 9/44) passed flatus per rectum between the second and third post-operative day. Ceruletide infusion was accompanied by a significant increase in the incidence of nausea and vomiting (P 〈 0.005, P 〈 0.0025) but these side effects were short-lived. These results indicate that ceruletide is likely to be a useful therapeutic agent for acute intestinal adynamic motility disorders.
