Notes: A retrospective histopathological study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of mucin filled ducts and their associated mucinous proliferation in 962 breast cancers and 335 benign lesions. A total of 38 (3%) cases with mucin filled ducts was identified and 27 (2%) of these showed mucin extravasation into the adjacent stroma, changes characteristic of mucocoele-like lesions. This constitutes the largest series reported to date. Of the mucocoele-like lesions 12 were prototypic screen-detected cases; 11 of which were mammographically detected on account of suspicious microcalcification and eight cases (67%) exhibited mucinous atypical ductal hyperplasia without overt malignancy. A further 12 mucocoele-like lesions were incidental findings in screen-detected (11) and symptomatic (one) cancers, the majority of which were invasive ductal carcinomas of no special type. In six of these cases (50%), mucinous atypical ductal hyperplasia or ductal carcinoma in situ was present. Thirty mucinous carcinomas constituted 3% of all cancers and three cases had associated mucocoele-like lesions. Mucinous atypical ductal hyperplasia or ductal carcinoma in situ was also associated with 11 cases of mucinous carcinoma. In six mucinous carcinomas, amorphous microcalcification with a similar appearance to that of benign mucocoele-like lesions was identified in the mucin, suggesting a possible link between the two lesions. Mucin-filled ducts or mucocoele-like lesions were almost twice as frequent in screen-detected as in symptomatic lesions. The presence of mucinous atypical ductal hyperplasia in screen-detected mucocoele-like lesions, a decade earlier than the peak of mucinous carcinoma, is a possible risk factor for subsequent invasive malignancy. Mucin-filled ducts, mucocoele-like lesions, mucinous atypical ductal hyperplasia or ductal carcinoma in situ and mucinous carcinoma may represent different stages of the same disease process. Our findings suggest that patients with mucin-filled ducts of mucocoele-like lesions merit close follow-up.

Notes: A multicentre study of 51 cases of lymph-node infarction seen in the 30-year period 1956 to 1985 was conducted in order to assess both the short- and long-term prognostic implications of the condition. In 14 cases malignant lymphoma was found synchronously with the infarct. Of the remaining 37 patients with apparently ‘benign’ lymph-node infarction only six showed manifestations of malignant lymphoma in the follow-up time studied (x=48 months; range 1-156 months). These subsequent malignant lymphomas all occurred within 2 years of the lymph-node infarction. A postal enquiry and collation of other cases in the medical literature indicates that a minority (26 of 81) have developed malignant lymphoma, and that these lymphomas, too, have all appeared within 2 years. Thorough examination of both the infarcted lymph nodes and others resected at the same time is mandatory in order to exclude concomitant or underlying malignant lymphoma. Two years after lymph-node infarction the risk of malignant lymphoma is negligible.

Notes: We retrospectively reviewed 107 consecutive cases of radial scar and complex sclerosing lesions in a 54 month period seeking vascular lesions using archival H & E stained 5 μm thick sections. Eight showed vascular abnormalities, five being false aneurysms which were limited to 62 lesions 〉10 mm diameter; no false aneurysm was found in 45 radial scars ≤10 mm. All cases displayed arterial lesions, but two also showed associated venous fibrosis. Traumatic false aneurysms with loss or severe thinning of the media and intimal, medial or extravascular spindle cell proliferation were found in the arteries of five cases with histological evidence of local reaction to previous fine-needle aspirational biopsy and clinical documentation of aspiration 18 to 121 days before. The diameters of the false aneurysms correlated with the original widths of the arteries. The other lesions with mature intimal fibrosis in arteries or veins lacked such local post-aspiration expansile reactive changes, or a history of fine needle aspiration. We conclude that traumatic false aneurysms found in complex sclerosing lesions seem to be iatrogenic, resulting from fine needle aspiration. Mature fibrosis in veins or arteries are probably unrelated processes.

Notes: To investigate the prevalence of squamous epidermoid inclusion cysts after wide-core needle biopsy.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and results:Epidermoid inclusion cysts were found in five of 17 surgical excisions (29%) after preliminary wide-core needle biopsies in a 7-month period. Thereafter they were not seen in 26 subsequent postwide-core surgical excisions in a period of 6 months.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:The cysts appear to be an iatrogenic complication of wide-core biopsy, and need morphological recognition in order to avoid confusion with spontaneous squamous metaplasia of benign or malignant breast epithelium. Longer term implications are unknown.

Notes: Sun-exposed and sun-protected skin obtained at post mortem from the nape of the neck in 14 subjects was immunostained using antisera to elastic, lysozyme, amyloid P component, and the plasma protease inhibitors alpha-I antitrypsin, alpha-I amichymotrypsin and alpha-2 macro-globulin. Both the normal clastic fibres in sun-protected skin, and clastosis in sun-exposed skin were positively immunostained for elastin, lysozyme and amyloid P component. Collagen fibres were unstained. No immunostaining of normal elastic fibres or elastosis in the skin was obtained with antisera to alpha-I antitrypsin, alpha-I antichymotrypsin or alpha-2 macroglobulin. It was concluded that the clastosis in sun-exposed skin does contain elastic fibres. The absence of immunostaining for plasma protease inhibitors probably indicates that the elastic material is mature, and not newly-formed.

Notes: Abstract Muon catalyzed dt fusion in dense D/T and H/D/T gas mixtures of hydrogen isotopes is studied by the MCF collaboration at JINR. The measurements were carried out with a high pressure target at the JINR phasotron in the temperature range 300-800 K at mixture densities $$ \simeq 0.4{\text{ and }} \simeq {\text{0}}{\text{.8 LHD}}$$ . Tentative experimental results obtained by several analysis methods are presented.
