Notes: We have investigated the local structural anisotropy of Tb/Fe multilayers using linear polarized synchrotron radiation. X-ray absorption measurements were performed at Fe K edge (7.1 keV) using normal and glancing angle incident photon. From the Fe extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), the local structural anisotropy was found for all multilayers as a slight difference of oscillation amplitude between the two incident directions. From the Fourier transformed EXAFS spectra, it is found that the local structural anisotropy shows the maximum at bilayer period of about 1 nm, where perpendicular magnetic anisotropy also shows the maximum value in various rare-earth/transition metal multilayers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic and magneto-optical properties have been investigated for ordered (Mn1−xFex)Pt3 alloy (0〈x〈0.6) films, prepared by annealing (Mn-Fe)/Pt multilayer films at 800 °C. The Kerr spectrum of the MnPt3 film had a large negative peak value of −1.18° at 1.24 eV, and showed a small positive peak around 3.2 eV. With increasing Fe content x, the peak value at 1.24 eV decreased in magnitude and the position of the peak shifted towards lower energy side. Furthermore, another peak appeared in the Kerr spectra around 2.3 eV for x〉0.24. The spectral analysis of the diagonal component of dielectric tensor and the off-diagonal component of conductivity tensor showed that all the peaks mentioned above were attributed to interband transitions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly ordered MnPt3 alloy film was grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) at a temperature of 300 °C. The MnPt3 film exhibits a large Kerr rotation, which reaches a maximum value of −0.7° at 1.24 eV. MnPt3(2 nm)/Co(0.6 nm) multilayers were also grown by MBE method onto MgO(111) substrates at a temperature of 300 °C. It was verified by the observation of the reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns that Co and MnPt3 layers in the film were grown epitaxially on MgO(111). The appearance of superlattice line due to Cu3Au structure in x-ray-diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of the ordered phase in the MnPt3 layer. The hysteresis loops for in-plane and film normal directions became close to each other, which implies that the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was induced through the multilayered structure. The Kerr spectrum of the MnPt3/Co multilayer have a negative peak of −0.26° around 1.4 eV. This value is fairly smaller in magnitude compared to the one estimated by the effective reflectivity method using the optical and the magneto-optical constants for Co and MnPt3 alloy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Compliance bei ambulanter Antibiotikatherapie im Kindesalter wurde überprüft.
Notes: Summary We carried out a survey in Japan to investigate compliance among children given oral antibiotics in an outpatient setting. The results of our survey revealed that, in Japan, approximately one-quarter of patients did not take their full course of antibiotics. Reasons for unsupervised self-discontinuation included: (1) the parent or guardian judged the infection to be cured; (2) the child refused to take the drug; and (3) the appearance of side effects. Causative organisms often involved in respiratory infections experienced in outpatient medicine include pneumococci, streptococci, staphylococci,Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis andMycoplasma pneumoniae. The β-lactams are effective against all of these bacterial species, with the exception ofM. pneumoniae. We conducted a survey of β-lactam antibiotics currently on the Japanese market and compared them to other oral antibiotics used to treat respiratory infections. Ease of administration, based on the incidence of adverse effects, particularly diarrhea, the dosage form, taste, dosage per administration and the number of doses required per day, are reported.

Notes: Abstract By component analyses of positron lifetime spectra in quenched gold, it was found that positrons are strongly trapped by stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT) at which the lifetime is about 160 ps remarkably smaller than that for monovacancies (∼200 ps) or divacancies (∼220 ps). Positron lifetimes at small vacancy clusters were also estimated in relation to the nucleation process of SFT, with the aid of computer simulation of kinetics of vacancy clustering during quenching and on subsequent isochronal annealing. The results show that large atomic relaxation occurs in small vacancy clusters among which pentavacancies have the largest open-space, thereby having the lifetime of about 230 ps larger than that of trior tetra-vacancies (∼160ps). It is also suggested that tetra- and penta-vacancies act as prenuclei for stable nuclei of SFT consisting of six or more vacancies.

Notes: Summary Studies were conducted on the effects of antibiotics on intestinal bacterial flora and symptomatic changes associated with possible superinfection following antibiotic treatment. Following the administration of oral antibiotics, there were no marked changes in the intestinal flora. After second and third-generation cephems were injected, most bacteria, excludingStreptococcus faecalis which is resistant to them, decreased and fungi increased. The incidences of diarrhea after administering oral antibiotics were high for amoxicillin and amoxicillin + clavulanic acid. In some patients with depressed immunity, such as leukemic patients and neonates, decreases in intestinal bacteria after doses of antibiotics led to increases in pathogenic bacteria. They invaded the circulating blood, leading to septicemia. Septicemia originating in the intestinal tract was frequently associated with the development of vitamin K deficiency. Besides changes in the intestinal flora, a decrease in oral food intake and the presence of a methylthiotetrazole group in the structure of the administered antibiotics were also found to play a crucial role in causing vitamin K deficiency
