    Notes: The effect of various levels of excitation on the stability and development of an axisymmetric mixing layer was studied experimentally. The flow was excited axisymmetrically by a single speaker placed at the base of the plenum chamber. Measurements of mean and phase-averaged velocity profiles were made using an array of hot-wire probes. The measured profiles were compared to eigenfunctions calculated from linear, viscous stability theory. It is shown that the theoretical predictions, based on measured profiles of mean velocity, compare very well with the phase-averaged measurements, even when the local disturbance reaches levels as high as 24% of the jet speed. The cumulative effect of excitation on the mean flow is examined as a function of local Strouhal number as well as excitation level.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. The toxicity to the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.) of soft water (pH6.0) with three concentrations of XAD-extracted aquatic humus was treated in the laboratory.2. Exposure to pH6.0 water without humus added resulted in 92% mortality after 3 weeks. Humus, added at concentrations of 7 and 20 g Cm 3, decreased the mortality to 80% and 64% in the same period.3. Surviving animals kept at pH6.0 had a lower growth rate, lower food conversion efficiency and higher body water content than animals kept at pH 7.3.4. Humus had no significant effects on growth, food conversion or body composition of G. pulex kept at pH 6.0. However, there was a tendency for growth and food conversion to increase, and for body water content to decrease with increased humus concentration. The effects of humus on growth and food conversion of G. pulex observed in this study do not support the contention that humus acts as a free coupler to lower metabolic efficiency. On the contrary, humus tended to benefit food conversion.5. It is suggested that low concentrations of humus can be directly beneficial to organisms in acidified water in ways other than by complexing toxic metals.

    Notes: This report describes the case of a 42-year-old man with malignant lymphoma, diffuse large non-cleaved cell type, who developed cutaneous malakoplakia in the left groin. The patient had widespread lymph node involvement, including a left inguinal mass which was clinically thought to represent recurrent lymphoma. The inguinal mass failed to regress after chemotherapy and irradiation, although lymphoma in other sites responded to chemotherapy. A skin biopsy of the area showed an ulcer and an abscess involving the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Microscopically, a diffuse infiltrate of foamy histiocytes was seen with numerous intracellular and extracellular, round and laminated bodies. Some of these bodies had a “targetoid” appearance, stained strongly with von-Kossa's calcium stain and showed the typical appearance of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies by electron microscopy. Cultured monocytes from the peripheral blood of the patient showed ultrastructural features similar to their tissue counterparts, suggesting a systemic involvement of the monocyte macrophage lineage. This case represents an unusual presentation of malakoplakia of the skin associated with relapsing malignant lymphoma in a patient on immunosuppressive drugs.

    Notes: Summary Quantitative retrievals derived from VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) radiances are combined with conventional surface and radiosonde data to evaluate the impact of the higher time and space resolution geosynchronous satellite soundings on the diagnosis of a preconvective environment over the central United States on 20 July 1981. Retrievals of temperature, dewpoint temperature, equivalent potential temperature, total column precipitable water, and lifted index, all derived at 60 km resolution over approximately three-hourly intervals, are shown to be physically consistent in space and time and to compare well with available radiosonde data. When VAS fields are used to augment qualitative VAS imagery and analyses from conventional data sources mesoscale regions with convective instability are more clearly delineated prior to the development of convection. The analysis of the VAS retrievals identifies significant spatial gradients and temporal changes in the thermal and moisture fields, especially at times and locations between radiosonde observations. Direct retrievals of vertically integrated “bulk” precipitable water and lifted index are particularly useful in this case since they correspond well to features in the VAS imagery and provide a strong preconvective signature. The nature of the VAS instrument dictates that these bulk parameters should display more consistency in space and time than the level-specific parameters due to the poor vertical resolution of the VAS instrument. The detailed analyses also point to limitations in using VAS data. Even with nearly optimal conditions for passive remote sounding (generally clear skies, minimal orographic effects, and a rapidly changing moisture field), the VAS retrievals were still degraded in some regions by VAS instrument noise and calibration errors and unresolved cloud contamination. Another problem is the cloud-free nature of the instrument data set, which biases the results toward a drier environment. In spite of these and other limitations, the analyses demonstrate that the geosynchronous VAS can be used in a case study mode to produce high-resolution spatial and temporal measurements which are useful for the quantitative analysis of a cloud-free preconvective environment.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Analyse von Jetstreaks der höheren und unteren Troposphäre und die damit verbundenen vertikalen Zirkulationen vor und während des Unwetters beim Red River Valley vom 10. April 1979 mit Hilfe der dreistündlichen SESAME-Daten vorgestellt. Die Arbeit betont die Transformation der Normalkomponente der indirekten Zirkulation im Endbereich eines Jetstreaks im oberen Niveau (ULJ). Hier verringert sich diese Komponente der ageostrophischen Strömung und kehrt ihre Richtung um, wobei der aufsteigende Ast sich von der Seite der zyklonalen Scherung auf eine Position bei der Achse des ULJ verschiebt. Diese änderung der vertikalen Zirkulation in 3 bis 6 Stunden scheint mit der vermehrten zyklonalen Krümmung, die mit dem Fortschreiten und der Verstärkung eines kurzwelligen in die zyklonale Strömung eingebetteten Troges verbunden ist, einherzugehen. Ein Jetstream im unteren Niveau (LLJ) entsteht zuerst im unteren Ast der indirekten Zirkulation über Texas und verstärkt sich später großteils aufgrund der Veränderung des kurzwelligen Troges. Das Fehlen einer entsprechenden Massendivergenz im oberen Niveau deutet jedenfalls darauf hin, daß Prozesse in der planetaren Grenzschicht (PBL) ebenfalls die Änderungen in der Montgomery Stromfunktion (ψm) beeinflussen, die einen wichtigen Beitrag für den Antrieb des LLJ darstellen. Die dreistündlichen Daten weisen ebenfalls darauf hin, daß unterschiedliche Advektionen, die mit Jetstreak-Zirkulationen verbunden sind und die Erwärmung in der Grenzschicht sich in kurzer Zeit deutlich ändern und unmittelbar vor konvektiven Ausbrüchen relativ kleine Gebiete destabilisieren können. Daher mag die Annahme, daß sich vorkonvektive Bedingungen in einem synoptischen Zeit-und Raumscale entwickeln (während nur das Freiwerden der konvektiven Instabilität im Mesoscale auftritt) nicht richtig sein.
    Notes: Summary An analysis of upper- and lower-tropospheric jet streaks and their associated vertical circulations prior to and during the Red River Valley severe weather outbreak of 10 April 1979 is presented utilizing the three-hourly SESAME data sets. The paper emphasizes the transformation of a transverse indirect circulation within the exit region of an upper-level jet streak (ULJ) in which the cross-contour components of the upper-level ageostrophic flow diminish in magnitude and reverse direction as the circulation's ascending branch shifts from the cyclonic-shear side to a position along the axis of the ULJ. The change in character of the vertical circulation over a 3- to 6h period appears to be related to the increasing cyclonic curvature associated with the propagation and amplification of a short-wavelength trough embedded within cyclonic flow. A low-level jet (LLJ) forms initially within the lower branch of the indirect circulation across Texas and later intensifies, in large part, as a response to a propagating and amplifying short-wavelength trough. However, the lack of a corresponding increase of upperlevel mass divergence during this period points to the possibility also influence the low-level Montgomery streamfunction (ψm) tendencies that are a significant contributor to the forcing for the LLJ. The three-hourly data also indicate that differential advections associated with jet streak circulations and boundary layer heating can change markedly over very short periods of time and act to destabilize convectively relatively small regions immediately prior to convective outbreaks. The premise that pre-convective environments evolve over a synoptic time- and space-scale (while only the release of the convective instability occurs on the mesoscale) may, therefore, not be correct.
