Notes: Abstract Heavy residues created in the reaction Ar + Ag at 35 MeV/u have been detected at various forward angles. Their velocity spectra (quite different from the corresponding spectra measured at 27 MeV/u) show that these events result both from central and peripheral reactions and that the fusion component has dramatically decreased. Coincident light charged particles spectra have been obtained in a large solid angle forward hodoscope. The analysis of these spectra allows to differentiate peripheral and central collisions. The proton spectra are analysed in terms of emitting sources. There is no need for a participant zone in peripheral reactions. Instead protons are emitted either from the target like or from the projectile like fragments. However projectile sequential emission is not sufficient to explain all the high energy protons.

Notes: Abstract We have measured for the 430 MeV86Kr+92.98Mo systems the triple differential cross sectiond 3 σ/dEdAdZ (E=kinetic energy,A=mass andZ=atomic number) of the reaction products in the angular range (θ=25, 45°). We focussed attention on a fast collective mode in deep inelastic reactions: the neutron excess or charge equilibration. This mode is shown to relax very quickly to equilibrium within a time scale of the order of 10−22s. It is shown that this collective degree of freedom exhibit a quantal behavior which can be seen in the observation of quantal fluctuations. The experimental results are discussed in terms of a simple equilibrium model. The giant dipole resonance of the composite system could be closely connected to this neutron excess mode.

Notes: Abstract The fission of U, Au, Te, Ag, Se, Cu and Cr induced by photons with a maximum energy of 580 MeV has been investigated using mica and glass track detectors in a sandwich configuration. Cross sections for U, Au, Te and Ag fission have been obtained which are in fair agreement with existing data for charged-particle induced fission, but are substantially lower than previous photofission results, obtained by other authors for Te and Ag targets.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the Ar + Au system at two different bombarding energies 201 and 248 MeV. The mass and the energy of the products have been measured at different angles. Mass distributions exhibits two components separated at the low bombarding energy and partly merging into each other at the high bombarding energy. One of them can be attributed to fission following complete fusion, the other one is centered around mass 40 and corresponds to deep inelastic products. These two different mechanisms correspond to different time scales. Angular distributionsd 2 σ/dθdM are peaked a little bit forward the grazing angle for products close to the projectile and, when the mass transfer increases, becomes constant. For deep inelastic collisions the mass transfer occurs in the way predicted using potential energy considerations, but the small FWHM and the slight shift of the position of the maximum of these distributions indicates a short contact time. Due to the increase of the temperature, the FWHM of the mass distribution of deep inelastic products increases with the bombarding energy. The mean total kinetic energy studied as a function of the detection angle shows the influence of statistical fluctuations at backward angles. One also observes for this system that the relaxation time connected with the mass asymmetry degree of freedom is larger than the one associated to the energy damping. Complete fusion cross sections measurements were also done at 183, 189 and 195 MeV which allowed to draw the excitation function for this process. Calculations of the fusion cross section using the concept of critical distance are in agreement with the data.

Notes: Abstract Total nuclear reaction cross-sections are determined by means of a 4π-γ method. The results cover a wide span of targets for various stable beams. The validity of the method is shown in a combined systematics including also the results of transmission-type experiments. The data are very well described by the formula developed by Kox et al. The same method is applied to secondary fragment beams produced from a 44 MeV/u22Ne beam on a 332mg/cm2 181Ta target. Using the LISE spectrometer the fragments4, 6He,6–9, 11Li,7, 9–12, 14Be,10–15, 17B11–19C,13–19N,15–21O,18– 21F and20,21 Ne are analyzed and transported to interact with a 199.4 mg/cm2 Cu target surrounded by a 4π-γ counter. The measured total reaction cross-sectionsσ R are discussed in terms of the reduced strong absorption radiusr 0 and compared with other experimental results.
