Notizen: A laser mirror mount is described for use in a vacuum enclosure which will allow for horizontal and vertical movement and, in addition, offer linear travel of around 1 cm with micron accuracy. This design is relatively simple and easy to produce and has proven both rugged and reliable in day-to-day use. Such a mount has great potential in applications such as color center lasers where operation at 77 K is required, thus necessitating a vacuum enclosure.

Notizen: Summary The climbing fibres to the x and lateral c1 zones of the anterior lobe of the cerebellum arise as branches of common stem olivary axons. Anatomical studies have shown that the c1 zone receives its climbing fibres from the dorsal accessory olive (DAO). It has, therefore, been assumed that the x-zone also receives its climbing fibres from this olivary subnucleus. The present study demonstrates that both the x-zone and the lateral part of the c1 zone in fact receive their climbing fibre input from the middle portion of the medial accessory olive (MAO) (approximate antero-postero-levels P10-13). Electrophysiological techniques were used to define the extent of these cerebellar zones and small volumes (15–50 nl) of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) were pressure injected into the defined zone. These small pressure injections resulted in injection sites with minimal spread to adjacent zones. The sensitive tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) reaction was used to visualize both the injection site and retrogradely labelled cells in the inferior olive. This combination of electrophysiological and neuroanatomical techniques gave extremely reproducible results. The results suggest that the zone previously named lateral c1 would be better designated cx.

Notizen: Abstract We examined the use of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data to provide preliminary information on broad vegetation types present within nature reserves in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia. We analysed Landsat data for an area of natural vegetation for which ground survey and aerial photographic data are available. We used canonical variate analysis to examine the degree of spectral separation between training sites selected in the main structural vegetation types. The training classes were then grouped into spectral classes and an allocation procedure used to map the pixels in the reserve into these classes. The analysis provided a good correspondence between spectral classes and broad vegetation types recognised from aerial photography, but did not discriminate between differences in dominant species (e.g. between different types of Eucalypt woodland). The classification derived from the study reserve was then applied successfully to two nearby reserves, indicating that the data can be used to provide initial information on the broad vegetation types present in wheatbelt reserves, although it is not suitable for finer resolution studies.

Notizen: Abstract A review was conducted of 202 neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) seen at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, over a 10-year period. The study population was biased towards the more severe cases and those requiring surgical intervention for complications. Most cases had one or more obstetric or perinatal stress factors present. Radiology was important in confirming the diagnosis and identifying those who required surgery. The indications for surgical intervention and the selection of the appropriate surgical procedure are discussed. Surgery was required for acute disease in 72 cases. In most of these, necrotic bowel was excised and temporary ostomies constructed. During the period of study the overall mortality decreased from 41% to 24%. Post-NEC strictures occurred in 18 patients, of whom 6 presented with bowel obstruction. The transverse and left colon seemed particularly susceptible to stricture formation. The diagnosis and management are described in detail.

Notizen: Abstract Haemangiomas are common benign skin lesions occurring in about 10% of all babies under 1 year of age. In rare cases they may be combined with haemangiomas of another area of the body. This report documents a solitary intrapulmonary haemangioma involving the entire right upper lobe in association with multiple similar skin lesions. Neonatal respiratory distress was the presenting symptom.
