Notizen: Many styrylpyridinium compounds (SPC), which are very stable in the dark, were prepared and evaluated as photobleachable dyes for contrast enhanced lithography (CEL). The photobleaching characteristics of water-soluble contrast enhancing materials composed of SPC and water-soluble polymer depend on the structure of the SPC and the kind of polymers used. The technique using SPC-based CEL proved to be very effective for the resist pattern profiles.

Notizen: Recently there has been a growth of interest in the use of diaryliodonium salts (Ar2I+X-), triarylsulfonium salts (Ar3S+X-) and triarylselenonium salts (Ar3Se+X-) as photochemical initiator for cationic polymerizations. It is suggested by Ledwith that electron transfer to these cations results in fragmentation with the formation of aryl radicals and if the reducing species is a suitable free radical, a chain reaction for formation of cation will occur. We carried out radiation-induced polymerization of α-methyl-styrene in dichloromethane and bulk cyclohexene oxide in the presence of triphenyliodonium salt (C6H5)2 (I+PF-). Polymerization of these monomers was observed in the presence of these salts (G(-M)⋍ 1300), while no polymer was obtained in the absence of salts. Postpolymerization was negligibly small. This polymerization is considered to be initiated by the reaction of free radicals produced by radiation with cation salts and to proceed by cationic mechanism, since α-methylstyrene polymerized by ionic mechanism but hardly polymerizes by radical mechanism and this polymerization was suppressed in the presence of a small amount of water. The initiation mechanism of this polymerization was investigated by the use of pulse radiolysis technique.

Notizen: A series of p-dimethylaminobenzylidene derivatives was able to sensitize the photodecomposition of diphenyliodonium salt to afford highly photosensitive negative-type resins. When a polymer-bearing methacryloylated group in the side chain was sensitized with a combination of the p-dimethylaminobenzylidene compounds and the iodonium salt, the polymer demonstrated high sensitivity even to 488 nm light emitted from an Argon laser. The same photoinitiator systems were applicable to insolubilize poly(glycidyl methacrylate) through cationic photopolymerization. The storage stability of these types of photoinitiators depends on the structure of the benzylidene compounds; decreasing the basicity of the amino group enhanced the thermal stability.

Notizen: The in vivo biocompatibility of metals coated with several different types of ceramics [alumina (α-Al2O3), titanium oxide (TiO2), titanium nitride (TiN), and hydroxyapatite (HAP)] was investigated. These composites had been devised for the purpose of incorporation into the stem of a total hip prosthesis. The materials were inserted into the mid-diaphyseal region of the femurs of adult dogs, and follow-up quantitative histological comparisons were performed for a period of up to 96 weeks. HAP-coated composites showed the best biocompatibility.
