Notes: Abstract When sodium azide was added to cultures of Myxococcus coralloides D a rapid loss in turbidity was observed. The lysis occurred irrespective of the culture age. If the azide was added to cultures which had been division-inhibited with puromycin, lysis was also induced. Other uncoupling agents (2,4-dinitrophenol, methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide and N, N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) were effective to induce lysis, but not the ionophores gramicidin D or valinomycin. Energizing the membrane by the addition of glycerol, glucose or ascorbate to prelytic cultures was a means of preventing the lytic events.
