    Notes: Herbage and faeces samples were retained from an intake and in vivodigestibility trial using material harvested at three different stages from five indigenous hill plant communities (those dominated by Agrostis-Festuca., Nardus stricta., Molinia caerulea., Eriophorum vaginatum and Tri-chophorum caespitosum) and from sown swards of ryegrass or white clover. Samples of the herbages and of their separate components, together with extrusa samples of the same herbages recovered from pen-fed sheep and cattle oesophageal fistulates, were digested in vitrousing rumen liquor. Measurements were made also of faecal nitrogen concentration (FN) and of indigestible acid-detergent fibre (IADF) using the samples from the original trial.The range of in vitrodisappearance values of the herbages (IVOMD; 0809-0278) was slightly wider than those of in vivodigestibility (OMD; 0-796-0-37I). Differences between OMD and IVOMD were greatest at low quality and relationships were best described by two separate linear regressions of OMD on IVOMD for (a) ryegrass, white clover, Agrostis-Festucaand Nardus(RSD; 0 0185) and, (b) Molinia, Tricho-phorumand Eriophorum(RSD; 00246). In vitrodisappearance values of extrusa were higher than those of herbages offered by 00503 and 00156 units for sheep and cattle respectively, partly because of greater levels of ensalivation, especially in the sheep. The relationships of OMD to IADF and to FN were poor, though inclusion of faeces output and fitting parallel lines for communities in the regression of OMD on FN reduced the RSD to 0020. We conclude that in vitrodigestion of samples of extrusa, using appropriate standards, is the best method of diet digestibility prediction for sheep and cattle grazing these communities.

    Notes: A generalized vaporization model is developed which describes the evaporation of a spherical liquid droplet irradiated by a high-intensity, pulsed laser beam. Diffusive and convective transport processes are included in the hydrodynamic description of a two-component system composed of droplet vapor and ambient gas. Numerical solutions to the two-component hydrodynamic equations are obtained which illustrate the ability of the model to describe both isobaric vaporization, and convective vaporization with the production of shock waves.

    Notes: The blast wave theory coupled with ionization described by the Saha equations and the charge conservation equation, are used to calculate the time-dependent, spatial distribution of the number densities of the different species of a plasma formed on a carbon surface. The temporal behavior of the normalized intensity profiles of the C i (247.8 nm) and C ii (251.1 nm) lines and the Stark shifts of the C i (247.8 nm) line from 0.1 to 0.4 μs are obtained. Good agreement is found between theoretical and experimental time-dependent, normalized, line intensity profiles and Stark shift profiles.

    Notes: The vaporization of a spherically symmetric liquid droplet subject to a high-intensity laser flux is investigated on the basis of a hydrodynamic description of the system composed of the vapor and ambient gas. In the limit of the convective vaporization, the boundary conditions at the fluid–gas interface are formulated by using the notion of a Knudsen layer in which translational equilibrium is established. This leads to approximate jump conditions at the interface. For homogeneous energy deposition, the hydrodynamic equations are solved numerically with the aid of the CON1D computer code ("CON1D: A computer program for calculating spherically symmetric droplet combustion,'' Los Alamos National Laboratory Report No. LA-10269-MS, December, 1984), based on the implict continuous–fluid Eulerian (ICE) [J. Comput. Phys. 8, 197 (1971)] and arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) [J. Comput. Phys. 14, 1227 (1974)] numerical mehtods. The solutions exhibit the existence of two shock waves propagating in opposite directions with respect to the contact discontinuity surface that separates the ambient gas and vapor.

    Notes: Spectrally resolved infrared fluorescence near 10 μm from vibrationally excited O3(ν3) has been observed in a cryogenic reactor facility at low pressure. The excited O3(v) is formed principally by three-body recombination of O and O2 in flowing, microwave-discharged O2/Ar mixtures at 1 Torr and 80 K. The spectral resolution is sufficient to permit identification and assignment of band centers for up to five quanta of stretching excitation. The observed transition frequencies are consistent with those predicted from a Darling–Dennison perturbation treatment. The spectra, which sample the recombination/deactivation sequence in its early to middle stages, indicate surprisingly little intermode coupling, being predominantly ν3 in character. There is also evidence of O3(v) excitation by near-resonant V–V coupling between O3 and O2(v=2). The spectroscopic analysis of the data is described, and considerations for scaling the spontaneous transition probabilities with vibrational level are discussed.

    Notes: Infrared (2–16 μm) emission from Ar Rydberg atoms, excited in a conventional low-pressure microwave discharge plasma, has been observed in the cryogenic COCHISE reactor/spectrometer facility. The observed spectrum is very complex but is identifiable using the detailed energy level structure and optical selection rules for ArI. Detailed transition probabilities for dipole-allowed transitions between 2 and 16 μm were computed using the Coulomb approximation. Comparisons of observed and predicted spectra show that substantial long wavelength infrared (LWIR) emission (∼12 μm) arises from Rydberg states near the ionization limit; these states must have kinetically enhanced populations in order to account for the observed emission intensities. The results are interpreted in terms of a radiative/collisional cascade sequence initiated by dissociative recombination of Ar+2 with energetic electrons in the active discharge.

    Notes: Spectrally resolved infrared chemiluminescence from vibrationally excited ozone, O3(v), has been used to study the reaction kinetics of O3(v) in discharged O2/Ar mixtures at ∼1 Torr and 80–150 K. Dependences of the excited state number densities on temperature and O2 mole fraction indicate O3(v) is formed primarily by three-body recombination of O with O2 and is destroyed by rapid chemical reaction with O. Several secondary excitation reactions involving vibrationally and electronically excited O2 are also indicated. The data are treated with a detailed steady-state analysis of the discharge kinetics, to extract estimates for rate coefficients of the key elementary reactions. The effective "quasinascent'' state distribution in recombination is also inferred; this distribution shows selective recombination into the asymmetric stretching mode, but an apparently statistical (i.e., collisionally scrambled) behavior among the vibrational states within that mode. The results are discussed in terms of the detailed dynamics of three-body recombination.

    Notes: The diffusion of electrons across a magnetic field in the presence of a beam–plasma instability has been studied by means of two-dimensional numerical simulations. It is found that the beam electrons can diffuse much faster across the magnetic field than the thermal electrons. This can be explained by the fact that the electrons in the beam are in resonance with the waves excited by the beam–plasma instability so that they experience a nearly d.c. electric field, causing large cE×B/B2 excursions.

    Notes: Voluntary intake and in vivo digestibility of herbage harvested from five indigenous communities–Agrostis-Festuca, Nardus and Molinia grasslands and Eriophorum vaginatum- and Trichophorum caespitosum-dominated varieties of blanket bog–and also from sown Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens swards were measured over two years. First growths of each sward were harvested at three stages of maturity and stored at — 20°C before feeding. Voluntary intake was measured while feeding ad libitum to 15% excess of the intake on the previous day and digestibility when feeding at 80% of voluntary intake.There was a common positive relationship (r2= 0·86***) between intake (adjusted for year of feeding, range 72·8–16·7 g organic matter (kg LW)0·75 d-1) and organic matter digestibility (range 0·796–0·371), covering Lolium perenne and most of the indigenous communities. However, there were significant differences between the regressions of intake on the concentration of neutral detergent fibre for ryegrass and the indigenous communities, and also between the regressions for individual communities.The results demonstrated the general value of organic matter digestibility as a predictor of intake potential, and the high digestibility and intake potential of immature vegetation from the grass and grass heath communities.
