Notes: The use of a small, nonresonant, coil of μm dimensions as the microwave magnetic field structure of a broadband electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectrometer is described. The coil is driven by a broadband microwave generator which operates between 0.1 and 8.5 GHz. The samples may fill the coil to approximately 100%. It is shown that for small size samples this system offers higher sensitivity than a conventional cavity spectrometer. Because the system is broadband, either frequency scans or the conventional magnetic field scans can be used to traverse the resonance. Examples for DPPH and for the spin glass AgMn using this method are reported. Since the sample coil is small, it has many potential applications, such as insertion into the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator or high-pressure cell, efficient use of power in ENDOR and other double resonance experiments, and rapid recovery from transients in pulsed ESR experiments.

Notes: We present magnetization and resistivity measurements on single crystals of yttrium doped with small concentrations of gadolinium (c=1, 2, and 3 at. %). The low-field susceptibility exhibits a spin-glass-like sharp cusp for the magnetic field along the c axis. However, there is no irreversible behavior below the temperature of the cusp, which rules out the existence of a spin-glass state. Moreover, our magnetization measurements show up a spin-flop transition for H in the basal plane. The existence of a long-range ordering is confirmed by our resistivity measurements. The resistivity parallel to the c axis exhibits a maximum just below the ordering temperature, which is reminiscent of the superzone effects observed in many rare-earth metals. The antiferro- magneticlike properties of the YGd alloys contrast with the spin-glass behavior observed in other Y–rare-earth alloys at similar concentrations.

Notes: Abstract The ESR of the spin glassAgMn (2.7 and 9.6 at %) has been investigated below and aboveT g(0.1T g〈T〈5T g) at various microwave frequencies. The analysis yields:1) No explicit frequency dependence but strong magnetic field effects, inherent with ESR-experiments.2) Part of the excess line width is identified as critical spin fluctuations, following a power law. However, because of the presence of the applied field, the reduced temperaturet is not a good scaling variable. We choose the non-linear susceptibility X s divided byH 2, which scales as the order parameter susceptibility. The experiment yieldsW ex∞(X s /H 2) p ,p=0.42. From this we deduce νz≈3.

Notes: Abstract The new application of electron-spin resonance to paramagnetic monolayers on well characterized surfaces (LEED, AES) in UHV is described. The high sensitivity of ESR is demonstrated for 10−2 monolayers NO2 adsorbed on Xe/Ag(111), corresponding to ≈1012 detectable molecules. For monolayers of Gd(0001) on W(110) the critical exponentγ of the susceptibility and the ordering temperatureT c are determined by analysing the ESR intensity and resonance field forT→T c + . Both determinations independently give a monolayerT c of app. 271 K. The critical exponentγ changes from 2D to 3D Ising-values for monolayers to thicker films.

Notes: Abstract Using plane grating, ellipsoidal mirror, grazing incidence monochromators at the storage ring BESSY, a resolution of ≦ 150meV was achieved for a photon energy of 285 eV. This high energy resolution considerably extends the range of possible studies using core level Spectroscopy. Some of the new opportunities are illustrated at the CK edge by resolving the vibrational fine structure of condensed C2H4 multilayers in the (1s−1, π*) state by means of photoabsorption spectroscopy. For the sake of comparison with other high resolution instruments, the vibrational fine structure of condensed N2 multilayers at the NK edge (∼ 400eV) was also measured, yielding a resolving power of 3000.

Notes: Abstract The near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) at the C K-edge of C2H2, C2H4, C2H6 on Cu(100) and Ag(100) surfaces is studied. The oriented character of the molecules on the surface combined to the dipole selection rules for photon absorption allows an experimental assignment of the nature of the various final states. A careful fitting of the NEXAFS spectra reveals final states of C–H character and shake-up satellites of the C(1 s) to π* (C–C) transition. The asymmetric line shape of the C(1 s) to σ* (C–C) transition is described in a scattering model of the photoelectron from the molecular potential.
