Notes: Abstract We studied general practitioner and parental attitudes towards the referral to child psychiatric clinics of 65 children aged 7–12 yrs. The doctors gave parental request and anxiety and the seriousness of the child's condition as the most common reasons for the referral. Their expectations of it were well in line with current psychiatric practice. There was a wide variety of parental motivations in attending the surgery, and the expectations of the referral were similarly diverse, Most prominent though were help for the child and a need to know underlying reasons. Although three-quarters of parents were satisfied with the general practitioner intervention, the majority said that they had not been given information about die psychiatric assessment process, nor knew what to expect from it, and three-quarters of the children were referred after only one consultation.

Notes: Abstract A substantial minority (23%) of children between 7 and 12 years of age attending general practice were found to have psychiatric disorders. Disturbance was slightly more frequent in girls than in boys, and emotional disorder was the most common diagnosis.Psychiatric disorder was associated with psychological disadvantage (broken homes, the child had lived away from the family, family history of psychiatric disorder) and with current high levels of parental stress in relation to their children. Disturbed children tended to present with symptoms of anxiety, bed-wetting, hayfever, nosebleeds or scabies. Amongst a subsample of children consulting in general practice, psychiatric disorder may be a relevant factor contributing to somatic consultation.

Notes: A test involving infection of seedlings in a glasshouse was evaluated for potential use in screening breeding material by comparing the results with those of field tests. The two tests correlated well for some resistant selections, particularly those closely related to Jet Neuf, and for very susceptible selections. However, two small groups of selections were resistant in the field but consistently susceptible in the glasshouse. Inoculation of mature plants in the glasshouse resulted in similar discrepancies and therefore gave no advantage over the seedling test. These discrepancies limit the usefulness of glasshouse techniques for routine resistance screening. A very high correlation was found overall between internal and external canker symptoms of the crown in nine field trials. Significant differences were found, however, between selections and cultivars in the relative severity of these two symptoms. Upper stem canker and crown canker were found to be very poorly correlated for individual plants, but highly correlated for eultivar means. The significance of these observations is discussed with respect to scoring canker in the field.

Notes: Thermal self-focusing of laser light may be significant when a plasma is irradiated with short-wavelength laser light. Self-focusing magnifies the light intensity which can increase absorption by plasma waves (producing hot electrons which may cause preheat), could increase scattering, and could be a perturbation source for the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. We use two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to characterize thermal self-focusing for parameters of interest to laser fusion applications, and present a simple model. A diverging beam is shown to reduce the self-focusing.

Notes: We present results of ensemble Monte Carlo simulations of the room-temperature relaxation of nonthermal photoexcited electrons in GaAs quantum-well structures. Electrons are excited at a mean energy of 20 meV above the band edge, similar to the experiments of Knox et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 1191 (1986)] and Oudar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 2075 (1985)]. Since this energy is less than the optical-phonon emission threshold, energy relaxation occurs primarily via carrier-carrier scatterings. We find that the excited electrons thermalize with the background electrons within 200 fs, in agreement with experiment.

Notes: Summary In an investigation of childhood psychological deviance, we used a brief interview, the Social Stress and Support Interview of Jenkins and her collogues (1981), to measure the stress and support experienced subjectively by parents in a number of social and interpersonal domains. The reliability — based on subject-rater and inter questionnaire agreement — consistency and external validity were found to be acceptable. A 4-point method of scoring was used, but for measuring support the reliability was increased when the scoring was converted to a 2-point scale. Using this reduced scale, the questionnaire provided measurements which were significantly associated with psychological deviance in children aged 7–12 years of age, and with psychiatric distress in their parents.

Notes: [Auszug] TRADITIONALLY, the main concern of geology has been with the Earth's crust, constituting less than 1 per cent of the planet's volume. Most of the Earth (84 per cent) is made up of the underlying mantle, and in recent years there have been international efforts to explore its composition (as ...

Notes: [Auszug] Volcanism in the Rufunsa region was approximately contemporaneous with the Chilwa Alkaline Province in Malawi (early Cretaceous, 135-105 Myr ago)7, and during the activity the three major centres were intruded by coarse-grained carbonatites, similar in all essentials to the classic intrusive ...
