Notes: Summary The persistence ofBorrelia burgdorferi in patients treated with antibiotics is described. The diagnosis of Lyme disease is based on clinical symptoms, epidemiology and specific IgG and IgM antibody titers toB. burgdorferi in serum. Antibiotic therapy may abrogate the antibody response to the infection as shown in our patients.B. burgdorferi may persist as shown by positive culture in MKP-medium; patients may have subclinical or clinical disease without diagnostic antibody titers toB. burgdorferi. We conclude that early stage of the disease as well as chronic Lyme disease with persistence ofB. burgdorferi after antibiotic therapy cannot be excluded when the serum is negative for antibodies againstB. burgdorferi.

Notes: Abstract U-Pb data of zircons from various gneisses of the eastern Sierra de Guadarrama, Central Spain, make it possible to reconstruct the pre-Hercynian and Hercynian history of this area: (1) upper intercept ages (2400 Ma for meta-igneous and 2000 Ma for meta-sedimentary rocks) of discordias defined by data of anhedral zircon fractions document the existence of Early Proterozoic crust; (2) lower intercept minimum ages of anhedral zircon fractions show radiogenic lead loss at about 540 Ma due to a thermal event leading to volcanism and emplacement of granitoid rocks into Precambrian crust: growth of euhedral zircons is possibly related to this event; (3) lower intercept minimum ages of about 380 Ma defined by anhedral zircon fractions in meta-sedimentary rocks prove an Early Hercynian event. According to present knowledge on the metamorphism in the Sierra de Guadarrama this event could be explained in terms of a Barrow-type medium-pressure metamorphism. The inferred Cadomian igneous event relates the geological history of Central Spain with that of western Africa to the south and Brittany to the north. Furthermore, similarities of the crustal evolution in the area studied and other internal zones of the Hercynian belt (Moldanubian zone, French Central Massiv) are confirmed. The Early Hercynian event for the first time affected all the rocks of the area together. The pre-Hercynian evolution of the two complexes is different and the present association of the basement rocks may be explained by thrusting or in terms of Early-Hercynian nappe transport.

Notes: Summary Urodynamic and morphologic findings in 82 patients with stress urinary incontinence were analysed. All patients had undergone vaginal respectively abdominal hysterectomy with anterior colporrhaphy respectively urethrovesicopexy. Whereas in the abdominal group the urodynamic and morphologic findings improved significantly, this did not occur in the vaginal group (Colp. ant. group). Although a comparison of the postoperatively continent patients with the recurrent incontinence patients showed no significant difference, it seemed, however, that the recurrent incontinence patients frequently showed lower urodynamic and morphologic values.

Notes: Abstract Cross section profiles d2σ/dΩdω′ for Compton scattering of photons by bound electrons are calculated for all subshells of the atom. Results obtained from the form factor approximation and from a relativistic version of the impulse approximation are compared with experimental data for Cu and Pb at a scattering angle ofθ=145° and a photon energy of 662 keV. The impulse approximation proves to be superior to the form factor approximation and is used to predict cross section profiles for a primary energy of 50 MeV and different scattering angles and charge numbers. It is shown that only for the heaviest atoms and scattering angles belowθ=5° there is a non-negligible contribution of Compton scattering to the elastic peak.

Notes: Abstract A 46000 dalton glycoprotein was isolated by extraction of freshly harvested P. falciparum merozoites (FCB1 strain), followed by gel electrophoresis of the extract and electroelution. The antigen is present in the late ring, trophozoite, schizont, and segmenter stages and is localized on the merozoite surface at the end of schizogony. It is not related to the 185000–195000 dalton schizont antigen. An antiserum against the 46000 dalton antigen inhibits invasion of erythrocytes by merozoites. The isolated antigen is identical to the antigen against which monoclonal antibody (mcab) 13.4 is directed.

Notes: Abstract The 80 000 dalton merozoite surface protein, derived from the 185 000–195 000 dalton schizont precursor, was isolated from detergent extracts of naturally-released merozoites using chromatographic procedures. A rabbit antiserum raised against this antigen was used for characterizing the 80 000 dalton fragment. The antiserum did not inhibit merozoite invasion or parasite growth in vitro, suggesting that this merozoite surface antigen is not directly involved in the invasion process of the merozoite into the host erythrocyte.
