Description / Table of Contents: Summary The determination of hydrogencarbonate in high-purity water applying ion-chromatography with indirect UV-detection is described. The results have been obtained using a low-capacity analytical ion-exchange column and eluents containing very pure weak organic acids. By direct injection of the sample concentration levels lower than 0.02 mg/l CO 3 2− have been detected.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Ion Chromatography is described as an alternative to traditional methods for quantitative determination of inorganic anions. Interest is focussed now to the development of the ion-chromatographic determination of anions related to weak acids. Chromatographic behaviour of carbonate species in water is studied applying “single-column ion chromatography”. The detection of the carbonate species has been carried out using a conductivity detector with electronic suppression as well as an indirect UV-detector. Two different anion-exchange columns have been proved, successfully.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In single-column ion chromatography frequently a „system peak” is observed, which is marked as hydrogencarbonate peak in a great number of publications. The area and direction of the system peak depends on the pH-value of the sample as well as on the eluent. In addition a correlation between the hydrogencarbonate concentration and system peak has been proved. The correlation HCO 3 − system peak is studied and the results are described in this paper.

Notes: Summary The control of water quality is often performed by analysis of organic group parameters, e.g., “Adsorbable Organic Halogen (AOX)”. The differentiation of the group parameter AOX and the determination of the parameter “Adsorbable Organic Sulfur Compounds (AOS)” can be performed by ion-chromatography for detection of the anions obtained after pyrohydrolysis of the organic adsorbed compounds. Investigations concerning pyrohydrolysis of organic solutes and enrichment on a nearly chlorine- and sulfur-free active charcoal have been performed. By means of this charcoal the determination of organic sulfur solutes in the μg/l range can be realized.
