    Notes: Abstract PIXE analysis method is applied to archaeometry problems. Advantages and disadvantages are emphasized. Some examples are presented which show the difficulties; especially important heterogeneities of ceramics, old coins and metals restrain from the use of this technique: other analysis systems, less expensive, like electron microprobe or X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, are compared with conventional PIXE method. The importance of proton microprobe is explained.

    Notes: Abstract Advantages of X-ray fluorescence with the use of Synchrotron Radiation are emphasized (intensity, polarization, tunability of energy). The experimental set-up and the fast computer system for the data reduction without standards are presented. The results are in good agreement with standard references. Examples of applications are presented: old coins and potteries were studied in archaeological domain; metal alloys were analyzed; element composition of bulk samples of volcanic rocks, sublimates and aerosols were determined.

    Notes: Abstract Geological standards are analyzed using PIXE and PIGE techniques. The concentrations of up to 26 elements are determined and compared with those obtained by other methods. PIXE and PIGE techniques are also applied to different volcanic rock samples. Their sensitivity, accuracy, and speed of data collection and reduction, are of great interest in the study of volcanic phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract Potsherds were analyzed chemically by four different techniques. Results are compared for many elements. The effect of temper appears as a problem because of the inhomogeneity of the bulk. PIXE and neutron activation are powerful and complementary methods to obtain element concentrations for proveniance studies. Also scanning electron microscopy and the electron microprobe are very useful to detect and analyze the tempers. Thus it is possible to gather data on the potter technology. In conclusion the use of a proton microprobe seems to be a promising instrument for versatile analyses.

    Notes: Abstract Four geological standards, BEN, GSN, MRG 1 and SY2 have been analysed using thick target PIXE, and the results are in good agreement with the accepted concentration values for 25 elements. This demonstrates that thick target PIXE analysis employing modern computer codes for data reduction, can be used for fast reliable analysis of geological samples.

    Notes: Abstract The capabilities of a standard multiparametric fitting procedure for extracting concentration profiles from a set of PIXE yield measurements are evaluated for both: real Zn depletion profiles in an initially homogeneous Ag 3 at % Zn alloy, annealed under vacuum, and simulated sinusoidal profiles. The comparison with the profiles obtained via iteration plus smoothing shows that multiparametric fitting is more performing.
