Notes: Abstract A survey of the situation regarding depletion of235U and234U in nine commercially available uranium compounds is reported. It was done by using a low energy γ-ray counting method, based on peak area ratio and dilute uranium solution. This survey shows that in Canada and USA there may be a large inventory of uranium compounds inadequately labelled regarding their isotopic composition; this situation is likely to be prevalent in many other countries.

Notes: Abstract Cosmic ray neutron interactions with indium, used as electrical contact within a Ge diode, the diode itself and the surrounding materials can give rise to a large number of photopeaks in the 50 to 1300 keV region of background spectra of Ge spectrometers with a passive shield. The nuclear processes and decays involved in the production of these photopeaks are discussed. These cosmic ray produced photopeaks are compared with those due to primordial radionuclides. Some useful information can be drawn from these measurements on the contribution of the cosmic rays on the background of Ge detectors with a passive shield.

Notes: Summary Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity is demonstrated in four strains ofD. melanogaster lacking active alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-null mutants). In the four strains, ALDH activities are similar to those found in a wild strain. It is concluded that ADH-null flies are able to detoxify acetaldehyde. This finding is discussed in relation with the dual function of ADH proposed recently.

Notes: Abstract Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) results in a spectrum of hepatic abnormalities ranging from minimal liver dysfunction to severe liver failure. These patients provide an opportunity to examine the relationship between the evolution of the liver disease and the ability to metabolize drugs. We have examined hepatic drug disposition in patients with chronic persistent hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, and cirrhosis due to HBV infection. Four model drugs were used: two low-extraction capacity-limited drugs (antipyrine and aminopyrine) and two high-extraction flow-limited drugs (ICG and lidocaine). The disposition of the four drugs tested was comparable to that of healthy controls in patients with chronic persistent hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, and mild cirrhosis. In patients with severe cirrhosis (as defined by the presence of ascites, encephalopathy, or large esophageal varices), there was a significant impairment in the aminopyrine breath test (−31%) and in the clearance of antipyrine (−53%), lidocaine (−49%), and ICG (−54%). These results indicate that impairment of drug clearance occurs only late in the evolution of HBV-related chronic liver disease. This is in keeping with the known slow and insidious progression of the disease.

Notes: Summary The surface free energy, or film pressure, π0, is measured for mica (Mica HK), silane-covered mica (Mica NP), Chromosorb W DMCS and glass beads. The film pressure is obtained from gas chromatography. The materials are used as adsorbents and benzyl alcohol and n-dodecane are used as molecular probes. Adsorption isotherms at 353 K are obtained from gas chromatography data and the surface free energy is computed with the help of the Gibbs equation. Values of π0 for a given surface are found to vary with the molecular probe. With benzyl alcohol π0 varies from 44 erg/cm2 for Mica 60 HK to 76 erg/cm2 for glass. In the case of n-dodecane π0 is found to vary in the same manner but the values range from 25 to 45 erg/cm2. The results are in good agreement with the values obtained with the contact angle method.

Notes: Summary The distribution of growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF)-like immunoreactivity in the human hypothalamus was studied by light-microscopic immunocytochemistry. With antibodies that we developed against synthetic human pancreatic GRF (hpGRF), we localized GRF immunoreactivity in neuronal cell bodies that were observed only in the infundibular (arcuate) nucleus. Immunostained nerve fibers were found in large numbers in the neurovascular zone of the median eminence, in the proximal portion of the pituitary stalk and in periventricular areas. These localizations are in agreement with those of studies recently performed in other species and strongly suggest that GRF can be released into the capillaries of the pituitary portal plexus to reach the anterior pituitary gland. The projections of GRF neurons in extra-infundibular regions suggest that GRF can also act as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in the hypothalamus.
