Notes: Thirteen cases of angiosarcoma of the face and scalp have been examined using immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Endothelial cell markers have been employed in an immunoperoxidase technique on tissue that has either been routinely processed, periodate-lysine paraformaldehyde fixed (PLP) and cold processed, or fixed in methacarn. A consistent pattern of endothelial cell labelling was only achieved in the PLP fixed tissue. In this fixative the angiosarcomas were factor VIII related antigen negative, Ulex europaeus lectin positive, laminin positive, unlabelled by the monoclonal antibody PAL-E, and positively labelled by the monoclonal antibody EN4. Ultrastructural examination of four cases showed evidence of vascular lumina in all tumours. Weibel Palade bodies were seen in only one case but three tumours showed some evidence of tight junction formation and marginal folding. Thus, our cell marker studies can be interpreted as consistent with a lymphatic derivation for this type of angiosarcoma but in contra-distinction the ultrastructural studies showed tumour channels with features suggestive of blood vessel differentiation.

Notes: Exact solutions of Maxwell–Dirac equations are investigated for which the Dirac field is of the type ψ(x)=α(p)eipλxλ. In the subclass where the mass parameter m≠0, there exists no nontrivial solution of the problem. In the subclass where the mass parameter m=0, there exist infinitely many solutions inherent with arbitrary functions. Furthermore, every solution for m=0 must have a null four-current vector field associated with it.

Notes: The variation of lattice parameter, saturation magnetization, and Curie temperature on the addition of Ti4+, Zr4+, and Sn4+ to some Ni-Zn ferrite compositions are reported and the results are explained on the basis of the movement of the substituting ions first to the tetrahedral and finally to the octahedral sites of the spinel lattice.

Notes: Rates for inelastic collision-induced transitions between rotation–inversion states are measured for the NH3 molecule colliding with He atoms and with N2 molecules. An infrared–microwave double resonance method is used to determine differences within pairs of collisional transition rates connecting different inversion pairs in the ground (ν2=0) vibrational manifold of NH3. The measured rates are analyzed for parity, and J and k selection rules. The results are consistent with Oka's saturation experiments on NH3, but in some respects inconsistent with theoretical calculations of collisional transition rates.

Notes: The ultrastructural localization of the IgA deposits in the skin of 15 patients with linear IgA bullous dermatosis of adults (LAD), 13 with chronic bullous dermatosis of childhood (CBDC) and three with childhood cicatricial pemphigoid (CCP) were studied. The site of the antigen was determined using sera from two LAD, 13 CBDC and two CCP patients. In all 31 patients the IgA was located predominantly below the lamina lucida (sublamina densa). Similarly, the indirect immunoelectron microscopic studies demonstrated the antigen to be present at the same site, below the lamina densa. This suggests that in linear IgA bullous dermatosis the antibody reacts with the antigen in the sublamina densa region of the basement membrane zone.

Notes: The histopathological and topographical alterations occurring during the early stages of chemical carcinogenesis in the hamster cheek pouch using 7, 12-dimethylbenz (α) anthracene (DMBA) were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. At the scanning electron microscopic level, cellular overlapping and mild disturbance of intercellular bridges were noticed as early as the second week of DMBA application; these changes progressed with time. Clear epithelial dysplastic changes at the light microscopic level were detected by the sixth week of the experiment. The results of this investigation demonstrate the usefulness of scanning electron microscopy as an adjunct tool to study early alterations in cell morphology which occur in the stratified squamous epithelium of the hamster cheek pounch in response to a chemical carcinogen.

Notes: The purpose of the present investigation was to study the histogenesis of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary glands. Eleven cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the minor salivary glands and five of the major glands were extensively studied employing immunohistochemical and fluorescent microscopic techniques. Both the intermediate cells and the duct cells showed a rather similar pattern of reactivity for vimentin, actin and EMA. Also, the intermediate cells and the myoepithelial cells showed a similar reaction pattern for keratin and UGA-1. The intermediate, myoepithelial and duct cells shared a similar reaction pattern for desmin, myosin, CEA, and S-100 protein. However, the rest of the tumor markers studied (AFP, PNA and WGA) were found to be non contributary. We also found that the intermediate and to some extent the epidermoid tumor cells showed a positive reaction with Azophloxine GA, which is a selective stain for myoepithelial cells in the normal glands. Based on these findings, the duct cells, the myoepithelial cell in the normal glands and the intermediate cells of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma share certain similar characteristics. The intermediate cells may actually be a mixed population, some having characteristics of the myopithelial cells and others of duct cells. These findings are relevant to the possible role of the intermediate cell in the histogenesis of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Notes: Abstract The formation of mullite via gels prepared from technical ethyl silicate and aluminium chlorides has been studied. Normally, gels prepared specifically with the oxide stoichiometry of mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) do not form the mineral mullite on firing to 1200° C in the absence of a mineralizer. However, when the stoichiometric gel is homogeneous (achieved by acidic or neutral catalysts during the gel preparation) firing at 1200° C can lead to an almost quantitative yield of mullite. For a homogeneous gel, the presence of strontium or caesium salts, or an organo-tin compound such as dibutyltin diacetate or dibutyltin oxide during the gel preparation promotes almost quantitative conversion to mullite at about 1000° C. There is a threshold concentration under which conversion to mullite is incomplete, some cristobalite being formed. For the organo-tin compounds, the type of aluminium chloride is unimportant and the way in which water for the hydrolysis step is added is also unimportant. When the gel is non-homogeneous, the product obtained on firing contains cristobalite andα-alumina orγ-alumina, with little mullite, even if strontium or caesium salts, or organ-otin compounds are present. A ceramic bond is formed from alumina and some other refractory grains during firing.

Notes: Abstract We show that the method of Dirac quantization is equivalent to Schwinger's action principle quantization. The relation between the Lagrange undetermined multipliers in Schwinger's method and Dirac's constraint bracket matrix is established and it is explicitly shown that the two methods yield identical (anti)commutators. This is demonstrated in the non-trivial example of supersymmetric quantum mechanics in superspace.
