Notizen: Abstract: Stimulation of phosphoinositide (PI) hydrolysis by excitatory amino acids (glutamate and ibotenate) or nor-epinephrine was potentiated in hippocampal slices from rats trained in an eight-arm radial maze, used as a test of spatial learning. No difference in basal or carbamylcho-line-stimulated PI hydrolysis was found between control and trained animals. An increased PI response to excitatory amino acids and norepinephrine was not found in hippocampal slices prepared from animals trained in a shock conditioning avoidance test. These results suggest a possible involvement of specific glutamate receptors coupled with PI hydrolysis in the synaptic mechanisms underlying formation and/or storage of spatial memory.

Notizen: 1. Acute intraocular injection of morphine or D-Ala-met-enkephalinamide (D-Ala-E) in rabbits caused a sustained decrease in intraocular pressure. Conjunctival instillation of naloxone solution prevented the lowering effect of morphine or D-Ala-E on intraocular pressure.2. Aqueous outflow facility appeared to be significantly higher in patients addicted to morphine or heroin than in healthy volunteers. Intraocular pressure was significantly lower in addicted patients than in control subjects. Conjunctival instillation of naloxone solution decreased aqueous outflow facility and increased intraocular pressure in addicted patients.3. Patients with chronic open angle glaucoma showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure after conjunctival instillation of morphine solution.4. It is concluded that intraocular opiate receptors are involved in the regulation of intraocular pressure in animals and humans.

Notizen: Abstract Two-dimensional maps of radio brightness temperature and polarization, computed assuming thermal emission with free-free and gyroresonance absorption, are compared with observations of active region 2502, performed at Westerbork at λ = 6.16 cm during a period of 3 days in June 1980. The computation is done assuming a homogeneous model in the whole field of view (5′ × 5′) and a force-free extrapolation of the photospheric magnetic field observed at MSFC with a resolution of 2″.34. The mean results are the following: (a) A very good agreement is found above the large leading sunspot of the group, assuming a potential extrapolation of the magnetic field and a constant conductive flux in the transition region ranging from 2 × 106 to 107 erg cm−2s−1. (b) A strong radio source, associated with a new-born moving sunspot, cannot be ascribed to thermal emission. It is suggested that this source may be due to synchrotron radiation by mildly relativistic electrons accelerated by resistive instabilities occurring in the evolving magnetic configuration. An order-of-magnitude computation of the expected number of accelerated particles seems to confirm this hypothesis.

Notizen: Summary The effect of conjunctival instillation of naloxone on intraocular pressure has been examined in morphine-addicted patients as compared to non-addicted healthy volunteers. Morphine-addicted subjects showed a lower basal value of intraocular pressure as compared to the control volunteers. The instillation of naloxone caused a normalization of intraocular pressure to a level similar to that of control volunteers. This test seems to be a useful screening method for detecting morphine addiction.

Notizen: Summary Hypophysectomized male rats bearing a homograft of two adenopituitaries under the kidney capsule showed a significant increase in b.wt as compared to hypophysectomized non-homografted animals. Radiommunoassay of growth hormone (GH), ACTH, α-MSH,β-endorphin and prolactin (PRL) revealed that only the latter was highly increased in the plasma of hypophysectomized homografted rats. These animals showed also increased levels of plasma corticosterone. However, daily injection of corticosterone failed to promote somatic growth in hypophysectomized non-homografted rats. These results suggest that PRL, and not other hormonal factors, promotes somatic growth in hypophysectomized homografted rats, and stress the concept that only PRL is secreted in significant amounts by pituitary homografts.

Notizen: Abstract The temporal association between the kinematic parameters of chromospheric dark features (DF) and the production of radio type-III bursts is investigated during a period of five months. The Doppler shifts inside six different DF are measured by means of the Meudon Multichannel Subtracting Double Pass Spectrograph (MSDP) during periods of some minutes around 24 type-III bursts. The position of the radio bursts has been checked to be associated with the same active region observed by MSDP, by using the Nançay Radioheliograph. It appears that 23 out of 24 bursts take place when the DF is totally or predominantly blue-shifted. In 18 out of 21 cases, a maximum of the outward velocity is observed in the optical image closest in time to the radio burst. The following peculiarities are also shown by the analyzed DF: (a) All of them present a lengthened shape, in most cases pointing toward a sunspot: a bright region coinciding with a parasitic polarity is observed in between. (b) Horizontal velocities along the DF major axis are often observed, always in a direction opposite to the sunspots. This association is interpreted by assuming that a shock wave, generated by the moving chromospheric material, is able to accelerate coronal electrons (according to a mechanism proposed by Leroy and Mangeney, 1984) thus producing type-III bursts.
