Notes: Summary We have measured the electro-olfactogram produced by four odorants, nicotine, i-pentyl acetate, i-pentanoic acid and cineole from twelve positions on an in vitro preparation of rat olfactory tissue. Each odorant shows a different pattern of response over the twelve positions which can be explained by differences in olfactory receptor populations between regions of the rat olfactory epithelium. The result for nicotine is further evidence that there are olfactory receptors which are stimulated by nicotine when it is presented as a vapour.

Notes: Abstract The role of organic solutes in the osmotic adjustment processes of the marine macroalga Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link was investigated in 1986, using fresh samples collected from mid-shore rock pools at Tayport, Fife, Scotland. Natural-abundance 13C nuclear magnetic-resonance spectroscopy revealed β-dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) to be the only major low molecular weight organic osmolyte present. However, on transfer to a hypersaline medium (300% sea water; 100%=35 S‰), tissue sucrose and proline levels increased markedly, while DMSP remained constant. Recovery of optimal photosynthetic activity and increases in inorganic ion levels occurred over a similar time scale to the changes in sucrose and proline (within 48 h), indicating that these two organic solutes are involved in hyperosmotic adjustment in E. intestinalis while DMSP is not. Freshly-collected plants transferred to 300% sea water medium in the dark showed no significant increases in organic osmolytes. In contrast, starch-enrichment (16 d continuous illumination) led to enhanced synthesis of sucrose and proline in the light and in darkness, but tissue DMSP levels showed no variation throughout. These observations suggest that DMSP is not involved in short-term osmoacclimation in E. intestinalis.

Notes: Summary The magnitude and time course of changes in hepatic blood flow following oral ingestion of a single (0.6 g/kg) dose of ethanol was studied using the model compound indocyanine green (ICG). Hepatic blood flow was not significantly different at 40, 90, 150 and 210 minutes following ethanol as compared to baseline values measured 20 and 70 min prior to alcohol ingestion. These results suggest that ethanol, at concentrations commonly associated with social drinking, has minimal effects on liver blood flow and would be expected to contribute little to changes in either the bioavailability or clearance of drugs highly extracted by the liver.

Notes: An error in setting a syringe driver caused a 2.75 kg infant to receive 37 mg atracurium over 75 minutes. Clinically full recovery of muscle power had returned spontaneously 135 minutes after the infusion was stopped. The child suffered no ill effects. Assay of blood and urine for atracurium and laudanosine conjirmed rapid clearance of the drug.

Notes: An expression is derived for the spin-wave stiffness constant D in a ferromagnetic metallic alloy. The formalism is based on a multiorbital tight-binding model and the Hartree–Fock approximation. Both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder are taken into account. Results for Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, and Ni-Cu alloys are obtained within the coherent potential approximation (CPA) and compared with previous calculations and experimental data.

Notes: Individual cannulated brown trout monitored during exposure to acidic water showed increased plasma cortisol after 3 h at pH 4.0 with low (0.05 mm) or high (2.8 mm) calcium (Ca) content, and after 2 days in acidic water with a high Ca content. Most fish did not survive for 2 days in acidic water with a low Ca content. Non-cannulated fish showed a similar increase in mean plasma cortisol after 2 days in high-Ca acidic water (pH 4.0–4.6), but not in acidic water of a low Ca content. After 7 days of exposure to acidic water, plasma cortisol appeared to recover when there was a high Ca content but increased 20-fold when Ca content was low. In cannulated fish severe acid stress resulted in a marked and rapid thyroid response. Plasma thyroxine (T4) was elevated after 3 h exposure to acidic water of both low and high Ca content and remained elevated for 2 days of acid exposure with high Ca. In non-cannulated fish an increase in mean T4 was apparent only after 7 days in low-Ca acidic water. Plasma triiodothyronine (T3) levels were not significantly altered by any of the acid regimes. Plasma glucose of cannulated fish was elevated within 3 h of acid-exposure and remained elevated after 2 days in high-Ca acidic water.

Notes: Abstract The properties of3He films on a Nuclepore substrate have been measured by pulsed NMR at a Larmor frequency of 10 MHz between 1.3 and 4.2 K. The3He film thickness was varied from 0.14 to 2 layers. The spin-spin relaxation timeT 2 agrees well with previous measurements of3He films on Mylar and Vycor glass at low temperatures. The spin-lattice relaxation timeT 1 for submonolayer films shows a strong temperature dependence consistent with a thermally activated process. This behavior has not previously been observed on amorphous substrates. The spin diffusion coefficient was measured for the thickest films at 4.2 and 2.6 K and found to be consistent with free atom motion of the3He in the vapor. In thin films or at low temperatures, the diffusion was too small to be observed. The magnetic coupling between the3He nuclei in a film and the protons in the Nuclepore substrate was determined from the effect of the3He on the proton-lattice relaxation time. It is about 100 times weaker than the interaction between3He and the fluorine nuclei in a Teflon substrate.

Notes: Abstract Ignition and the subsequent acceleration of flame in clouds of coal dust dispersed in mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen have been studied. Two coal sizes, 24 and 54 μm, in concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.22 kg/m3 were employed. Flame acceleration and the approach to transition to a stable detonation were monitored by a combination of microwave interferometry and pressure measurements. Flame and shock velocities up to 1.85 km/sec were observed. Ignition distances were found to be independent of the concentrations of dust and oxygen and particle size.
