Notes: Summary A population of 41 non-hydrocephalic patients in whom a lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) was inserted for various conditions is reviewed. 19 had persistent cerebro-spinal fluid rhinorrhoea following cranial injury, basal skull surgery or of unknown origin, 3 had recalcitrant benign intra-cranial hypertension, 14 had a persistent bulging craniotomy site after operations for intra-cranial tumours or head trauma, 4 had syringomyelia and 1 had a postoperative cervical meningocele. There was no shunt-related mortality. LPS was effective in treating the initial symptomatology in 31 patients. Further revision or removal of LPS were needed on 9 occasions in 8 patients showing shunt-related mechanical or infectious complications or persistent postural headaches. This report demonstrates the safety of the LPS procedure experienced in another population of 146 patients with communicating hydrocephalus operated on in the meantime. According to the authors' experience, the versatility of the clinical applications of LPS seems well established. LPS should be considered when a CSF diversion is required in patients showing absent or minimal ventricular enlargement in the CT scan.

Notes: There is a group of disorders characterized by simultaneous and progressive fibrosis of several discrete regions of the body. This disease complex, “multifocal fibrosclerosis”, most commonly involves the retroperitoneal and mediastinal compartments and may be accompanied by cutaneous lesions. In most cases the aetiology is unknown but there is good evidence, supported by the patient we describe, for a vasculitic origin in a significant proportion of patients. We report a case of multifocal fibrosclerosis associated with cutaneous lesions. These included livedo reticularis and recurrent, painful nodules and pustules on the legs and feet, which progressed to chronic ulceration. Histologically there was evidence of an underlying necrotising vasculitis.A review of the cutaneous changes that have been reported in association with multifocal fibrosclerosis allows speculation regarding the aetiology of the disease process.

Notes: Abstract: Isolated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were quantified biochemically in the cerebella of 6-day-old rats. 14C-Labeled hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin-4-sulfate (C-4-S), added prior to isolation of GAGs from tissue, served as internal standards to allow correction for unknown losses during the purification procedure and exact quantification of GAGs in the intact tissue. Three main constituents—HA, chondroitin sulfate (CS), and heparan sulfate (HS)—were found at concentrations of 1.82, 1.52, and 0.76 μg/mg protein amounting to 44%, 37%, and 19% of the total GAG fraction, respectively. Incorporation of [3H]glucosamine precursor into GAGs was higher for HS (56% of incorporated precursor) and lower for HA (29%) and CS (15%). The specific activities of individual GAGs were 64.7 nCi/μg for HS, 14.2 for HA, and 8.3 for CS.

Notes: Abstract: Total and individual glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were determined in rat cerebellum in tissue explants at various postnatal ages. The major constituents of GAGs were chondroitin sulfate (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), and heparan sulfate (HS). Dermatan sulfate (DS) and keratan sulfate (KS) could not be detected and therefore each amounts to 〈5% of all GAGs at all ages studied. HA was the prominent GAG during postnatal development and only a minor constituent at adult ages, whereas CS was the predominant GAG in adulthood. HS remained relatively constant throughout development. The incorporation of [3H]glucosamine into individual GAGs was highest for HS at postnatal day 6, whereas HA showed intermediate and CS the lowest levels of incorporation during the first postnatal week. All major GAGs showed the lowest incorporation values at adult ages.

Notes: The magnetotelluric phase in the medium of incidence over a good conductor varies from its value at the conductor surface, usually close to 45°, to the characteristic standing-wave phaseshift of 90° over a distance of a few conductor skin-depths, much shorter than the vacuum wavelength at the frequencies considered. Over the top of a graben or at the surface of a two-layer structure the basement can be looked upon as the matrix. If the graben or the overburden is a better conductor it will carry an extra current density in phase with the electric field, thus giving rise to an additional magnetic field also in phase with the electric field. This drives the argument of the surface impedance toward smaller values. For a more resistive graben or overburden the current is depressed, corresponding to a reduction of the surface magnetic field by an amount in phase with the electric field. This effect drives the phase of the impedance to values above the characteristic 45° of a uniform conductor.

Notes: Abstract An N3− for O2− substituted oxynitride high-quartz material of essentially 1∶1∶2β-eucryptite composition was prepared and the effect of the nitrogen substitution on the thermal expansion of the crystal lattice studied. The substituted material of ∼5.8 anion % nitrogen is isostructural withβ-eucryptite. The thermal expansion behaviour of the oxynitride crystal lattice is similar to that of theβ-eucryptite lattice, but a drastic decrease in expansion anisotropy is noted.

Notes: Summary UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT) was studied immunohistochemically in hepatic foci and nodules of N-nitrosomorpholine-treated mice. Serial sections were stained for glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase). It was found that a high percentage of G6Pase-negative liver foci and nodules were also UDPGT-negative (34%). In addition, G6Pase-negative foci without altered UDPGT phenotype (30%) and UDPGT-negative foci without altered G6Pase phenotype (8%) were detected. G6Pase-positive foci were also present (24%). Interestingly, most G6Pasepositive foci were UDPGT-positive (16%). Some G6Pase-positive lesions without altered UDPGT phenotype were also found (8%). The major phenotype observed in rat hepatocarcinogenesis models (UDPGT-positive/G6Pase-negative foci) was not detectable in the mouse model. These results demonstrate heterogeneous alterations of UDPGTs in mouse hepatic foci. They furthermore suggest marked differences between the mouse and the rat in the regulation of UDPGTs in similarly induced rat hepatic foci.

Notes: Summary Effects of 3,4,3′,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) on glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase)-altered hepatic foci of N-nitrosomorpholine (NNM)-treated B6C3F1 mice were investigated. TCB was chosen as a selective 3-methylcholanthrene-type inducer and tumor promoter. To initiate hepatocarcinogenesis, mice were treated with NNM (160 mg/l, in drinking water for 7 weeks), as in previous studies with the rat model. After a treatment-free interval of 22 weeks, TCB was administered (5×50 mg/kg, every 3 days), and liver foci were analysed 10 weeks after the start of TCB treatment. Unexpectedly, the number of G6Pase-negative and-positive foci per liver was markedly diminished following TCB treatment (to 32% and 57%, respectively). On the other hand, the mean volume of the remaining G6Pase-altered foci was enhanced, owing to an increase in the percentage of foci of large size (〉0.5mm2). Throughout the experimental period of 39 weeks prolonged liver injury due to NNM and TCB treatment was demonstrated by histology and by elevated serum levels of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase. The results suggest that (in contrast to the rat system) TCB exhibited opposing effects on liver foci in the mouse model: (a) moderate tumor-promoting effects and (b) cytotoxic effects in NNM-injured liver, leading to decreased numbers of liver foci.
