Notes: One hundred eleven college students participated in this two-session experiment designed to explore the origins of anti-nuclear war activism. In Session 1 participants completed questionnaires assessing a number of background characteristics and attitudes, the most important of which for this study's purpose was a measure of perceived political efficacy in the nuclear realm. One week later both the salience of the nuclear weapons issue and participants' sense of personalized risk were experimentally manipulated in a 2 × 2 × 2 (salience × risk × measured efficacy) design. Dependent measures were a behavioral intentions questionnaire and an actual opportunity to sign a petition which participants did not recognize as part of the experiment. High salience significantly increased both anti-nuclear war behavioral intentions and actual behavior as predicted. Individuals who felt highly efficacious were also significantly more likely to take action than others as predicted. A similar relation between efficacy and behavioral intentions was not found, although a salience by efficacy interaction was. Personalized risk influenced only behavioral intentions. Finally, the relative impact of these three variables and of other background and attitudinal variables measured in the first session was explored using regression techniques.

Notes: 1. The actions of angiotensin II, bradykinin, oxytocin, arginine vasopressin, relaxin, serotonin and the prostaglandins E2 and F2α were examined on preparations of costo-uterine muscle from stilboestrol-treated rats.2. All the agonists, except relaxin, when used in concentrations which contract the rat uterus, also produced contractions of costo-uterine muscles. Concentration-response curves were steep and maximal responses to the agonists were comparable. The negative log molar EC50 values were: serotonin, 6.5; angiotensin II, 8.8; bradykinin, 8.4; PGE2, 8.3; PGF2α, 7.1. The EC50 values (units/L) for oxytocin and vasopressin were 4.4 and 2.7 respectively.3. Indomethacin (2.8 or 5 μmol/L) did not decrease the contractile effects of the peptides or serotonin. The effects of serotonin were reduced, but not reversed, by methysergide (0.94 μmol/L).4. Porcine relaxin inhibited field stimulation-induced contractions of costouterine muscle and uterine horns from immature rats pretreated with oestradiol cypionate and from stilboestrol-treated mature rats. It was much less potent, and its effects were less clearly concentration-related, on costo-uterine muscle.5. The inhibitory effects of relaxin on the uterus were unaffected by propranolol (1 μmol/L), confirming that on this tissue relaxin acts independently of the release of catecholamines. Progesterone (30 μmol/L) was also without effect on the action of relaxin on the uterus.6. These results taken together indicate that the costo-uterine muscle of the rat: (i) contracts in response to serotonin and the peptides angiotensin II, arginine vasopressin, bradykinin and oxytocin independently of the release of the contractile prostaglandins F2α and E2; and (ii) in contrast to the uterus, may lack a significant population of receptors for relaxin. These differences from the whole uterine horn of this species may reflect the absence of endometrial tissue, and/or of sensitivity of the smooth muscle cells of the costo-uterine muscle to oestrogen.

Notes: Feulgen-stained blood smears taken from deformed alevins in a heat-shocked Atlantic salmon population were analyzed by microdensitometry. Within individual alevins, variable proportions of erythrocytes of differing DNA contents were seen. In a frequency distribution of these cells, peaks of DNA content were observed whose means appeared to increase in an arithmetic series. It is suggested that this, together with the complex nuclear morphology of the higher members of the series, is most likely to have arisen as a consequence of cell fusion processes involving, originally, haploid cells. During the 5-week period of yolk sac absorption there was an apparent selection against erythrocytes having higher DNA contents.

Notes: Abstract The isotopic composition of sulfur in sulfate from precipitation, stream inflows and outflow of the Lake 239 watershed at the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, was monitored for four years, 1982–1985. Rainfall had δ34S of 3–9and a three year mean value weighted by the mass of sulfate of 4.8‰ Sulfur in streams ranged from 5–15 and displayed a pronounced seasonal pattern in which δ34S showed significant negative correlations with both streamflows and sulfate concentrations. Outflow values were much more constant and averaged 6.4‰ over the three year period. Sulfate reduction or sorption favoring retention of the lighter isotope in the watershed was the probable cause of the isotopic variation of the sulfur isotopes in the streams. A sulfur isotope budget for the lake balanced within 1‰

Notes: Many industrial proceses require the circulation of particles between reacting fluidized compartments at a stable, but flexible rate, so that the processes can be operated at different solids rates. In order to understand the phenomena involved in the circulation and its control, circulation of sand particles has been studied through a new experimental approach, using an open-loop two compartment circulating system.Experimental results show that the control of the circulation rate depends on three phenomena: the vertical resisting force in the fluidized compartments, the contraction of flow in the communication zone, and the bypass of gas between the compartments. For industrial purposes, the first appears to be predominant in the control of the solids rate. The second ensures neither the strict control of this rate nor the required flexibility. The link between the gas bypass and the circulation phenomena is explained and recommendations for the design and operation of circulating systems are given.
