Notes: Abstract In 1982–1983 nauplii and adults of several co-occurring copepods and Artemia sp. nauplii (Lake Grassmere, New Zealand strain) were fed to the hydromedusae Obelia geniculata (L.) and Phialella quadrata (Forbes), two species which are very abundant in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. Clearance rates of both hydromedusae were significantly correlated with predator diameter, but independent of water temperature and prey density. P. quadrata consumed all developmental stages of some copepod species, but O. geniculata consumed only nauplii. Clearance rates of O. geniculata were most strongly related with the strength of the prey escape response, and showed little relation with prey size or movement rates. Clearance rates of P. quadrata were equally influenced by the prey escape response and prey size, but a large amount of the variability in clearance rates could not be explained by any of the prey characteristics, or by a linear combination of the prey characteristics. Clearance rates of the hydromedusae are combined with measures of hydromedusa abundance in Wellington Harbour to calculate daily per capita death rates of the prey.

Notes: We report the results of longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (LMKE) measurements on bilayers consisting of a thick permalloy film covered by varying thicknesses of Nb. The LMKE pertains to situations in which light with a finite angle of incidence is reflected from a plane surface, and M in the sample is parallel both to the plane of incidence and the surface. Either s- or p-linearly polarized 6328-A(ring) light is incident on the sample at 60° to the normal. The two components of the complex Kerr rotation are measured with a modulation technique utilizing a λ/4 plate and a Faraday rotator driven by dc and 2000-Hz signals. With cycling of an in-plane magnetic field, square magneto-optical hysteresis loops are observed in both rotation and ellipticity. There is a change in sign, as well as a decrease in the magnitude of the switching discontinuity in these quantities with increasing overlayer thickness. These results are very similar to those of the corresponding idealized boundary value problem. The technique gives experimental information on the magnetic properties of films buried below a nonmagnetic material or of thin films bounded on both sides by a nonmagnetic material. Further, it gives a probe of the phase and intensity of optical frequency electric fields below a reflecting surface.

Notes: Summary Field distribution patterns and laboratory feeding experiments have suggested that blooms of colonial blue-green algae strongly inhibit relatively large-bodied daphnid cladocerans. We conducted laboratory experiments to test the hypothesis that blooms of the colonial blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa would shift competitive dominance away from large-bodied daphnid cladocerans toward smaller-bodied cladocerans, copepods, and rotifers. In laboratory competition experiments, increasing the proportion of M. aeruginosa in the algal food supply resulted in a shift from dominance by the relatively largebodied cladoceran Daphnia ambigua to dominace by the copepod Diaptomus reighardi. The small-bodied cladoceran Bosmina longirostris was always numerically heavily dominant over D. ambigua, but its estimated population biomasses were only slightly higher than those of D. ambigua. Daphnia ambigua consistently outcompeted the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. Our results demonstrate that blooms of M. aeruginosa can alter zooplankton competitive relations in laboratory experiments, favoring small-bodied cladocerans and copepods at the expense of large-bodied cladocerans. However, contrary to predictions, blooms of M. aeruginosa did not improve the competitive ability of rotifers.

Notes: Abstract Effective management of engineering information is critically needed for the design of future complex engineering systems. Yet engineers are not trained in engineering data base management concepts. To help address this issue, a prototype integrated design system has been developed for the Air Force to aide research and instruction on key integration concepts, including (1) the use of a shared data base to eliminate redundancies and inconsistencies; (2) the use of a relational data base management system to store, locate, and retrieve data from the shared data base; (3) the development of interfacing programs to act as interpreters between the application programs and the common data base; and (4) the role of executive software to manage the integrated system. Key software used includes a computer-aided design system, a structural analysis program, various graphics packages, and a relational data base management system. To assess system flexibility, additional programs were added to the system. The design of the data base proved to be an important step in this implementation. Several methodologies useful in the design of the data base were investigated and subsequently used to organize the data base for the integrated design system. Results discussed include system development, and applications, as well as the effectiveness of the integrated system's configuration.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of two solvent extraction techniques for the determination of Pu oxidation states in solution was tested with low-ionic-strength solutions and with high-Na and high-Mg brines that contained Pu concentrations sufficient for spectrophotometric analysis. One procedure only differentiates between reduced Pu [Pu(III) and Pu(IV)] and oxidized Pu [Pu(V) and Pu(VI)], whereas the second procedure was designed to differentiate between Pu(IV), Pu(V), and Pu(VI) in solution. Both procedures successfully differentiated between oxidized and reduced Pu in both dilute solutions and brines when tested with samples that contained only the Pu(IV), Pu(V), or Pu(VI) oxidation states. However, when the second solvent extraction procedure, which differentiates between Pu(V) and Pu(VI), was employed for solutions that did not contain a strong oxidant to maintain the Pu(VI) oxidation state, significant quantities of Pu(VI) were reduced to Pu(V) during extraction, indicating that accurate quantification of Pu(V) and Pu(VI) is not possible with this procedure.
