Notes: The growth quality of thin, superconducting YBaCuO films has been compared on random and (100) oriented yttrium-stabilized zirconia substrates using x-ray diffraction and ion channeling experiments. Superior growth is observed on (100) substrates with narrow mosaic distributions (0.4°) and a minimum yield value of 10% in the channeling experiment. The lattice matching required for epitaxial growth is achieved by azimuthal adjustment of the film plane with respect to the substrate. The superior growth is reflected in the film properties like the critical current density yielding values of 2×106 A/cm2 at 77 K.

Notes: The growth features of YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films on (100) MgO substrates were studied by He ion channeling and x-ray diffraction measurements. A minimum yield value of 7% at 2 MeV He ion energy and a standard deviation of the crystallite misorientation of only 0.1° show that epitaxial growth (c-axis oriented) is achieved despite a large lattice mismatch of about 9% between the film and the substrate. Detailed studies of the energy dependence of the dechanneling yield at the film-substrate interface for films of different thickness reveal the presence of dislocations probably formed by strain relief in the initial state of growth. Stacking faults appear as the main defect structure in the bulk of the films.

Notes: Thin superconducting films of YBa2 Cu3 O7 have been prepared by magnetron sputtering from targets of sintered material in an oxygen-argon atmosphere. The compositional and structural properties were studied by Rutherford backscattering and x-ray diffraction. The films were deposited at substrate temperatures between 580 and 800 °C. It was found that the material grows in the oxygen deficient tetragonal phase. In situ heat treatment at 430 °C in pure O2 atmosphere generates the orthorhombic structure and the films on sapphire and SrTiO3 coated sapphire substrates show the full superconducting transition at 83 K.

Notes: Ultrathin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x with thicknesses down to 2 nm were grown on(100)SrTiO3 and (100)MgO by inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering. Metallic behavior and zero resistance temperatures above 4.2 K were obtained in 3-nm-thick films on SrTiO3. Thinner films revealed temperature-activated conductivity and only partial transitions to superconductivity due to inhomogeneities in the film morphology. On MgO, the critical film thickness leading to deteriorations of the transport properties was 6 nm. An analysis of the fluctuation-enhanced conductivity near Tc in terms of the Aslamazov–Larkin theory [Phys. Lett. A 26, 238 (1968)] revealed three-dimensional behavior even in the thinnest fully superconducting films.

Notes: Abstract High-T c superconductivity withT c onsets up to 42 K (midpoint: 37 K, zero resistance: 34 K) is observed in X-rays homogeneous single phase La1.8Sr0.2CuO4. The quarternary compounds La2−x Ba x CuO4 and La2−x Sr x CuO4 (0≤x≤0.3 for Ba and 0≤x〈1 for Sr, depending on the heating conditions) are mixed-valence oxygen defect oxides, characterized by the presence of Cu2+ and Cu3+ simultaneously. These oxides have a tetragonal symmetry (space group:I 4/mmm) similar to that of K2NiF4. We report the synthesis, characterization, and superconducting properties of various high-temperature superconducting La−Ba−Cu−O and La−Sr−Cu−O compounds. Through the substitution of Sr for Ba in these oxygen defect compounds an increasing superconducting transition temperature onset from 28 K to 35 K for La1.8Sr0.1Ba0.1CuO4 was observed. A positive initial pressure coefficient ofdTc/dp=290 (mK/kbar) has been found for La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 with a magnetic susceptibility change consistent with the 100% diamagnetic expectation value.

Notes: Abstract We report the synthesis, characterization and superconducting temperature of high-temperature superconducting Y0.3Ba0.7CuO3, Y0.4Ba0.6CuO3 and Y1.2Ba0.8CuO4. The volume fraction of the superconducting phase is estimated to be of the order of 10%. HighT c superconductivity withT c -onsets up to 125 K (midpoint 102 K, zero resistance: 90 K) is observed in multi-phase Y−Ba−Cu−O oxygen defect compounds with the nominal composition of Y1.2Ba0.8CuO4−y (0≦y≦0.4).

Notes: Abstract Thin superconducting films of La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 have been prepared by magnetron sputter deposition and subsequent temperature treatment. The composition of the films has been determined by Rutherford backscattering and the structure by thin film X-ray diffraction. The onset of superconductivity was about 32 K and the midpoint near 28 K. Defect production in the films by He ion bombardment revealed a drasticT c reduction with a sensitivity similar to that observed in the Chevrel phases. Oxygen implantation and subsequent annealing led to an enhancement of theT c onset.

Notes: Abstract Superconductivity with transitions near 80 K and 110 K has been observed in sintered samples of the system Bi−Ca−Sr−Cu−O. The samples were prepared from mixed powders of the oxides or carbonates of the metallic elements. It was found that the heat treatment has to be restricted to a narrow temperature range near 800 °C to obtain optimum samples with respect to superconductivity. The best samples show two transitions of equal height at 80 K and 110 K with onsets near 115 K as determined from resistivity.

Notes: Abstract We have fabricated tunnel junctions on thin films of Y1Ba2Cu3O7 which were epitaxially grown by magnetron sputtering on (100) and on (110) oriented SrTiO3 substrates. These junctions of the type Y1Ba2Cu3O7/barrier/Pb or In showed with high reproducibility in the conductance a gap-like structure with the maxima near±16mV. We supplied experimental arguments that this structure reflects properties of the quasi particle excitation spectrum of Y1Ba2Cu3O7. The gap-like structure was found to disappear atT c mainly by weakening and not by a shift of the peaks to lower voltages.

Notes: Abstract Thin films of YBaCuO have been deposited onto Al2O3, MgO, SrTiO3 and ZrO2 substrates by inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering. The main advantage of this preparation technique is the high reproducibility of the results allowing systematic studies of the film properties as a function of deposition parameters. Optimum preparation conditions were a low discharge voltage (≈100 V), a high oxygen partial pressure (2×10−1 Torr) in an oxygen argon mixture, and substrate temperatures around 800°C. The films grow highly textured on all substrates yielding single crystalline growth on SrTiO3 and MgO as proved by X-ray diffraction and channeling. The zero resistance values of the sharp transtions usually are around 90 K. highest critical current densities were determined in films grown on MgO and SrTiO3 with values up to 5.5×106 A/cm2 at 77 K.
