Notes: Abstract The effect of fast magnetization reversal induced by external radio frequency (rf) fields has been studied in FeBO3 using the Mössbauer technique. The rf collapse and sideband effects were investigated as a function of intensity for two rf field frequencies: 62 and 36 MHz. The switching times estimated for magnetization reversal are of the same order of magnitude as in amorphous metals and Fe-Ni alloys. Because of the relatively short switching times the magnetization reversal must be of rotational character.

Notes: A single crystal of [(C6H5)4P][(C6H5CH2)–(CH3)3N][Cl2FeS2MoS2] has been investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy with various orientations of the crystal with respect to the γ beam. From this investigation we derive that the main component of the electric field gradient tensor Vzˆzˆ is positive and oriented perpendicular to the Fe–Mo direction. This result was confirmed by additional single crystal measurements applying an external magnetic field, and by magnetically perturbed spectra of polycrystalline samples. The determination of the orientation of the electric field gradient tensor with respect to the molecular axes is a prerequisite for a decisive check of molecular orbital calculations on this type of binuclear bio-inorganic systems. Notes: The present study reports the experimental results and a theoretical model, based on short-range order and electronic charge transfer from Ti to Fe, to explain the dependence of the isomer shift on the iron content in β-Ti(Fe) solid solution. The theoretical expression reported here for the isomer shift depends on three different fitting parameters which take into account the electronic-charge transfer, and has been fitted with the experimental data for samples containing 3–18 at. % Fe.

Notes: Abstract Samples of the system LiNbO3-Fe2O3 prepared by water quenching and by the double-roller quenching method in the range up to 24 mol% Fe2O3 were investigated by Mössbauer and ESR spectroscopy. In the water quenched samples up to 11 mol% Fe2O3 only the Fe3+ and the Fe2+ valence states could be detected. The Fe2+ concentration decreased with increasing Fe2O3 content. Above 11 mol% Fe2O3 magnetically split Mössbauer spectra indicated the presence of Fe2O3 clusters. The isomer shift values of Fe3+ as a function of Fe2O3 concentration showed jumps at 6 and 11 mol% Fe2O3, whereas no significant changes could be detected in the quadrupole splitting values. The ESR data already exhibited the existence of isolated Fe3+ ions and of clusters with Fe-Fe distances less than 8 Å for the lowest Fe2O3 concentration. The cluster signal intensity increased with increasing Fe2O3 content. The roller quenched samples showed increased Fe2+ concentration as compared to the water quenched samples, which suggests that slow quenching results in iron oxidation and cluster formation. For low Fe2O3 concentrations a valence state change Fe3+⇄Fe2+ can easily be obtained by heat treatments in various atmospheres, whereas for higher Fe2O3 contents (9.8 mol%) precipitations ofα-Fe (in reducing atmosphere) and Fe2O3 (in air) could be observed in addition to the valence state changes of a remaining part of dissolved Fe ions. On the basis of the obtained results a model was suggested for the unusual behaviour of the lattice parameters observed in LiNbO3-Fe2O3.

Notes: Abstract A model is proposed based on electron hopping between octahedral Cu2+ and Cu3+ ions. Exchange interaction is assumed to be an electron-exciton one. Ground-state excitons are formed by freeze-in of the hopping process. The model is able to explain the main phenomena observed in the new high-T c superconductors.

Notes: Abstract Interest is focused on the segregation and clustering behaviour of iron atoms in fcc Cu100−x−yAuxFey, alloys (x=6 to 50.7 at%, y=0.2 to 1.0 at%) of three different metallurgical states: as-rolled, fast-quenched and melt-spun. The gold concentration was varied to assess the effect of change in lattice parameter. Mössbauer spectroscopy has been used to examine iron clusters and phases in samples as functions of annealing temperature and time. The development of f c c γ-Fe, segregates with increasing annealing time at temperatures around 410° C has been monitored and the Néel temperature of the antiferromagnetic γ-Fe precipitates as well as their particle size determined, the latter by transmission electron microscopy. The increase in isomer shift with increasing gold concentration is accounted for mainly by changes in atomic volume.

Notes: Abstract In analogy to optics, polarized γ-rays can be produced by absorbing one linearly or circularly polarized component. The transmitted γ-rays are polarized in the opposite direction. In samples with large effective thickness, such dichroism effects might cause an appearance in the spectra which is—at least at first glance—unexpected.

Notes: Abstract Changes in structure and magnetic properties of Fe40Ni40B20 alloys were investigated as a function of the surface velocity, Vu, of the quenching substrates in the range 8 m/s≤Vu≤70 m/s. For Vu〉30 m/s no changes were found. Below a “critical” region, 20 m/s≤Vu≤30 m/s, where changes in spin orientation are observed, crystallization processes are frozen in. The structure of one of the crystallization products, (FeNi)3B, appears to depend on the surface speed Vu.

Notes: Abstract The two component system Fe2 (MoO4)3. MoO3 denoted as CFM (crystalline ferric molybdate) has been transformed to the amorphous state by application of shearing stress under high pressure. The transition from amorphous ferric molybdate (AFM) to CFM can be achieved by air annealing of AFM at T〉550 K. A detailed study of the crystallization process has been performed by Mössbauer, X-ray and microcalorimetric measurements. A proposal for the “structure” of the amorphous state and for the crystallization process is made. Below the Néel temperature (TN=13 K) CFM orders weakly ferrimagnetic, whereas the magnetic ordering of AFM occurs below 4.2 K with a still unknown magnetic phase.
