Notes: The distance dependent lifetime of biacetyl separated from a Ag(111) crystal by NH3 spacer layers ranging in thickness from 28 to 457 A(ring) has been measured. We extended previous work, where the molecular emission was resonant with the silver interband/plasmon transition, to the case where the emission is below the interband transition. The modulation of the radiative rate is described inadequately by the classical theory for our experimental geometry. At short distances where nonradiative energy transfer to the metal is important, the classical prediction deviates from the data as well. These observations are consistent with a model in which energy is transferred to electrons localized at the metal surface but might also be explained by an inability of the classical theory to model the radiative rate properly.

Notes: A variety of experimental techniques have been employed in a spectroscopic investigation of the strong visible chemiluminescence from the phosphine–nitrous oxide reaction system. Reaction was initiated by a fast electrical discharge in PH3/N2O mixtures over the pressure range 18–666 Torr. The predominant emission is a true continuum extending from a threshold wavelength at 3300 A(ring) to beyond 1 μm. The results are consistent with the possible existence of a chemically formed (PO)2* exciplex molecule as the source of the visible continuum emission, but another molecular emitter containing only phosphorus and oxygen atoms, such as PO2, cannot be ruled out. Because of the possible use of this reaction system for a tunable, visible laser source, laser cavity tests and absorption and stimulated emission tests were carried out; these gave negative results. The photon yield from 3300 to 9000 A(ring) was determined to vary linearly with pressure; a maximum yield of 8.5×10−3 was reached at the highest pressure investigated of 666 Torr. The broad spectral range of emission and low photon yield indicates that the ratio of stimulated emission to spontaneous emission did not exceed 0.02 at any wavelength shorter than 9000 A(ring).

Notes: The trajectory joining two points a1 and a2, which minimizes the transit time for a particle, initially at rest, to fall in a uniform gravitational field from a1 to a2, is called the brachistochrone. Johann Bernoulli was the first to find an analytical form for the brachistochrone; in 1696, he discovered that the trajectory is a cycloid. In this paper the relativistic generalization of this classic problem is presented. Four separate curves are actually identified: a particle falling in both a uniform electric and uniform gravitational field is considered. The curves that minimize the times of flight measured by an observer in a laboratory in which a1 and a2 are fixed and also the curves that minimize the proper times of flight are found.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-five cases of congenital rubella syndrome were recorded in 1,458,126 live births in 19 EUROCAT birth defects registries from 1980 to 1986. During the study period, the incidence declined steadily from 3.50 to 0.41 per 100,000 births. Rubella infection occurred in 12 multiparous women indicating failure in immunization programme.

Notes: The physical properties of a new class of ionomers comprising a semirigid polyphenylene ether backbone were investigated. The material was studied principally in the form of films of ca. 150 μm micrometers in thickness. The study focused on material of 600 equivalent weight. Torsion pendulum results showed a significant increase in the glass transition temperature of the ionomer relative to that of its ester precursor but gave no evidence of ionic clustering. Stress-strain studies performed both in water and in 20% KOH solution at 80°C indicated that the mechanical properties of the material remain stable under these conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate both the high temperature behavior and the water uptake of the ionomer films. The behavior of this ionomer at high temperature and in an alkaline solution is of particular interest in view of the possible use of these films as separators in an alkaline electrolysis cell.

Notes: The sorption and transport properties of newly developed aromatic carboxylate polymers have been investigated in the context of their application as membrane separators for water electrolyzers. Conductance measurements of aromatic carboxylates of various equivalent weights have been performed as a function of current density, temperature, and electrolyte environment. Results have been compared with those for Nafion 117. The sorption results in dilute and concentrated solution show large water and electrolyte uptake for the aromatic carboxylate films. Furthermore, relatively large sodium ion self-diffusion coefficients have been found in both dilute and concentrated solution environments. The results of these measurements are characteristic of microporous films. The de conductance behavior of the aromatic carboxylate ionomers is quite different from that found for nonporous 1150 equivalent weight Nafion membranes. This difference is caused primarily by the microporous structure of the aromatic carboxylates, which results in large membrane specific conductances.

Notes: Double-charge-transfer spectroscopy has been used to confirm that CF+ and CCI+ can exist for times greater than several μs in electronically excited states. From the spectra obtained it was shown that those states are 4.7 ± 0.7eV and 3.3 ± 0.5eV above the ground states for CF+ and CCI+, respectively. The experimental technique is quite sensitive to the detection of long-lived excited states and it is shown for CCI+ that the relative populations of the excited and ground states are markedly different when CFCI3 and CF2ClCFCI2 are used as the precursor molecules in the dissociative-ionization process.

Notes: A series of new polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ) containing alkylenedioxy units within the backbone were prepared in high molecular weight forms (ηinh = 0.82-1.5 dL/g). The glass transition temperatures ranged between 203 and 241°C, decreasing with increasing length of the alkylenedioxy groups. Solution-cast films gave tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at room temperature as high as 14,400 psi, 378,000 psi, and 8.1%, respectively. The PPQ were readily compression molded to provide compact tension specimens that gave fracture energy (GIc) as high as 10.5 in. lb/in.2 Titanium to titanium tensile shear specimens provided average strengths of 4400 psi at 26°C, 3100 psi at 177°C, and 2010 psi at 203°C. The PPQ were resistant to normal aircraft fluids but were soluble in chlorinated solvents.
