Notes: Summary Homovanillic acid (HVA), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and tryptophan (TRP) were measured in the CSF obtained from the basal cistern of 20 patients, who had undergone surgical obliteration of bleeding aneurysms within 3 days after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). The concentrations of these substances, which were assayed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were the highest on days 3 or 4, and thereafter showed a gradual decrease with an increase in time. The cisternal CSF in patients who had severe pre-operative clinical grades of SAH or vasospasm contained relatively higher concentrations of HVA, 5-HIAA and TRP than those contained in patients who did not. It is proposed that SAH stimulates the release of monoamines from the brain with the resultant extracellular accumulation of their metabolites and their diffusion into CSF during the acute stage. This stimulatory effect of SAH on the brain monoamine system may be consistent with those previously reported in cases of cerebral haemorrhage or infarction.

Notes: Radiation losses from the main plasma of the JAERI Tokamak-60 (JT-60) were measured by a 15-channel bolometer array and those from divertor chambers in the ion and electron drift sides were each measured by two bolometers. The bolometric detector consisting of three layers (5-μm-thick gold absorber, 7-μm-thick polyimide foil, and 0.1-μm-thick gold resistor grid) was developed for this measurement. In typical diverted discharges with NB heating, the ratios of power radiated from the main and divertor chambers to the absorbed power were approximately 10% and 20%, respectively. Intense poloidal asymmetries of radiated power localized near the X point outside the torus were observed in diverted discharges. The profiles of the radiated power were reconstructed by an Abel inversion with an asymmetric term. On the other hand, a poloidally asymmetric radiation band localized near the inner wall, "marfe,'' was observed for dense plasmas in limiter discharges with neutral beam heating.

Notes: This paper outlines the status of a 6-GeV synchrotron radiation designed at RIKEN. This facility consists of a main storage ring, a booster synchrotron, a 1.5-GeV preinjector linac, positron injection linacs, and others. The electronan GeV. The storage ring has a circumference of 1069.2 m and 7-m-long straight sections for insertion devices. The lattice of the main ring is a Chasman–Green-type one and has 36 periodicity. The low emittance (εx=8.2 nm rad) and large dynamic aperture are expected even with field errors and misalignments of magnetic elements. Three years of a preconstruction research and development period and 5 years of construction period are scheduled.

Notes: Systemic necrotizing vasculitis involving cerebral blood vessels is described in a 30-year-old man with rheumatic heart disease and subacute bacterial endocarditis. Fever, anaemia, splenomegaly and positive blood cultures for Gram-negative bacteria were found on admission. The fever resolved with antibiotic therapy on the third hospital day but he then developed hemiplegia and multifocal seizures. The seizures progressed to uncontrollable status epilepticus accompanied by congestive heart failure and the patient died 20 d after admission. At autopsy, exudative and necrotizing vasculitis involving medium- to small-sized arteries was seen in the brain, the heart and the skeletal muscles. Rheumatic myocarditis and endocarditis and old rheumatic mitral valve deformities were also present. In addition, verrucous endocarditis in the mitral valve and Löhlein's focal glomerulonephritis were noted. We discuss the possible mechanism of the systemic necrotizing vasculitis in relation to rheumatic fever.

Notes: Abnormal production of immunoglobulin in the joint space is frequently observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We have previously demonstrated that adherent synovial Cells (ASC) from patients with RA are involved in B-cell differentiation by their spontaneous production of B-cell differentiation factor (BCDF). The regulation of the production of this factor, however, has not yet been described. We investigated the effects of recombinant interleukin 1α and β (rIL-1α and rIL-1β) on the production of BCDF in ASC Increased production of BCDF was observed with increased rIL-1 concentration. Production of BCDF was detected 3 h after exposure of ASC to rIL-1 and increased throughout a 48-h culture. This BCDF, assayed on SKW6-CL4 cells, was found to share a common active site with interleukin 6. The effect of rIL-1 was almost neutralized by anti-IL-1 antibody and the addition of polymyxin B did not diminish the effect of rIL-1, indicating that rIL-1 itself stimulates ASC in vitro. These results suggest that IL-1 may play a regulatory role in the production of BCDF in synovial tissue.

Notes: We examined the production of and the response to B-cell growth factor (BCGF) and B-cell differentiation factor (BCDF) in 21 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 23 normal subjects. T cells, 2.5 × 106/ml, were cultured for 24 or 72 h with 1% phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). After absorption of PHA by chicken erythrocytes (CRBC), they were used for BCGF and BCDF. In inactive SLE, BCGF activity was significantly lower than that in normal subjects. Active SLE contained two separate groups, one showing normal BCGF activity and the other showing lower activity than normal. In contrast. BCDF activity from initial culture in active SLE was elevated. The B-cell response both to BCGF and BCDF was elevated in active SLE without Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I antigen (SAC) preactivation. However, the B-cell response to SAC was markedly disturbed. Thus SLE B cells were shifted to the mature state in vivo. We also demonstrated pivotal abnormalities of monocytes in SLE B-cell growth and differentiation. These results may contribute to the understanding of the abormalities of T-B interactions and the overproduction of antibody in SLE.

Notes: Abstract Neutron emission from the d-d nuclear fusion reaction, D/d,n/3He, in and on titanium metals /titanium sponge and the mixture of titanium powder/ trapped deuterium at about 1 atm has been ascertained by using a high resolution liquid scintillation detector. The neutron emissions from 11 samples which were provided under wide varieties of conditions were measured by temperature change in the range of liquid nitrogen temperature to 350 °C. As a result, it was proved that the neutron emission observed can be divided into two types, such as cooling and heating, by the evolved conditions. Moreover, by estimating the neutron emission efficiencies of samples, it was suggested that the neutron emission reactions are closely related to the deuterium trapped in the surface of titanium metal.

Notes: Abstract As a new fact, the neutron emission from the d-d nuclear fusion reaction in a SiO2−D2 system has been confirmed as well as that in the Ti−D2 system. By using a liquid scintillation detector, the neutron emissions from 8 sample materials consisted of SiO2, in which a small amount of deuterium was adsorbed chemically on the surface layer, were measured in the range of temperature between liquid nitrogen temperature and 400 °C. As a result, it was demonstrated that the neutron-emission reactions take place predominantly on the surface layer of sample material.
