    Notes: Experimental data are presented for the diffusion of arsenic in polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) during a 15-min anneal at 900 °C. A new model is used to describe the data, which takes account of the different dopant diffusion rates in grains and in grain boundaries. The model is divided into early and late stages and, in particular, the early stage model identifies grain growth as the major mechanism by which arsenic transfers from the grains to the grain boundaries. In the late stage model, grain growth can be ignored and analytic solutions for the arsenic concentration are derived.

    Notes: Questionnaire survey data from 144 large U.K. firms are used to describe and discuss the nature of organization design in major companies. It was found that the majority of firms were multidivisional. However a considerable variation in internal operating procedures was found which emphasized that many multidivisional companies do not behave in the way that the strategy/structure literature predicts. Empirical testing of the relation between structure and financial performance also emphasizes that divisionalization is not necessarily the key to a superior profit performance. Rather it would appear that organizational procedures need to be reconsidered in the light of recent divisional structures established in many companies. It is argued that a powerful divisional head office may weaken overall performance and that instead greater attention should be paid to the opportunity to decentralize operating decisions to the individual business units within each division.

    Notes: This is a process based on (1) 90% volume reduction of whey by ultrafiltration, (2) partial demineralization of the UF retentate by electrodialysis or diafiltration, (3) pH adjustment of the UF retentate before and after demoralization to pH 4.65, and (4) centrifugation of the retentate produced β-lactoglobulin-enriched fractions containing 33% of the original acid whey protein and 17% of the original sweet whey proteins. Lactose and ash impurities in the β-lactoglobulin-enriched fraction were reduced by 18% by resuspending the pellet in distilled water at pH 4.65 and recentrifuging. Diafiltration of the α-lactalbumin-enriched fraction with 2, 4 and 6 volumes of distilled water reduced the lactose and ash content of this fraction by 53%, 62% and 81%, respectively. Gel electrophoresis patterns of the two protein enriched fractions confirmed selective enrichment of β-lactoglobulin or α-lactalbumin in each fraction.

    Notes: The nitrogen solubilities of β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin-enriched fractions derived from acid and sweet wheys were measured over a range of concentrations as a function of pH. The β-lactoglobulin-enriched fractions had relatively low nitrogen solubilities at concentrations above 5% (W/V), especially at pH 4.65. This fraction was soluble at pH 7.0 and at concentrations below 5% (W/V). The α-lactalbumin-enriched fraction had a high nitrogen solubility at concentrations of 〈inlineGraphic alt="leqslant R: less-than-or-eq, slant" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:01458892:JFPP31:les" location="les.gif"/〉 20% (W/V) within the pH range of 3.0 to 9.0.

    Notes: Factorial experimental designs were used to study the effects of gas injection on the efficiency of thermal energy utilization in evaporation by spray drying. Both the main effect and the interactions of this variable with feed pressure, feed concentration, nozzle size, and drying temperature were investigated. the use of gas injection led to a decrease in the thermal energy required for evaporation. the magnitude of this effect was larger at the lower levels of feed pressure, feed concentration, and drying temperature. However, this does not imply that spray drying is more energy efficient than such alternative modes of water removal as multi-effect evaporation and reverse osmosis.

    Notes: Abstract The streptococcal transposon Tn919 was transferred from Streptococcus faecalis GF590 to selected Group N Streptococcus strains and to one strain each of Lactobacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc cremoris, using the filter mating method. An S. lactis MG1363 Rifr Tcr transconjugant also acted as a donor, but was less efficient than GF590. Frequencies of transfer varied between 4.0 × 10−8 and 5.29 × 10−5 per recipient. Further analysis of S. lactis MG1363 Smr Tcr transconjugants showed that insertion of Tn919 into the chromosome was site-specific.

    Notes: Macroscopically normal tongues were examined from 161 necropsies. Two types of lingual epithelium were investigated by morphometry and the results were statistically analysed in relation to known levels of alcohol and tobacco usage in each case. Alcohol and tobacco were each associated with a reduction in epithelial thickness brought about by a reduction in the maturation layer due mainly to cell shrinkage By contrast, the progenitor layer increased in size, due to hypertrophy rather than hyperplasia Changes occurred in each type of epithelium and were more severe with alcohol. There was no significant interaction between alcohol and tobacco. The structural changes appeared to be non-specific reactions to local toxic effects of alcohol and tobacco. They could, if accompanied by equivalent functional decrements, indicate an increased vulnerability to carcinogens, whether or not these derive from alcoholic drinks or tobacco smoke.

    Notes: Summary This study examines the effect that sugars and amino acids in the adult diet of Jalmenus evagoras can have on female feeding behaviour, somatic maintenance, longevity, fecundity and egg weight. The presence of sugars in their adult food stimulated butterflies of this species to feed, and they appeared to compensate for low (1% wt/wt) sugar diets by feeding for longer periods. Butterflies were also more likely to feed on diets containing amino acids than on water controls. The availability of sugar allowed females to maintain or even increase their body weight and fat body size, but amino acids had no effect on these variables. Individuals on the medium (25% wt/wt) sugar diet attained the greatest longevity. Female fecundity was increased as much as threefold by the availability of sugar. However, amino acids in the diet had no effect on either longevity or fecundity. Egg weight was not affected by the concentration of sugars or amino acids in the adult diet, but was correlated with the weight of the female butterfly. These results demonstrate that the availability of carbohydrates in the adult diet could play an important role in the population dynamics of this species. However, the presence of amino acids had little effect on most of the variables measured, nor was there any interaction effect between sugars and amino acids.

    Notes: Summary Euploea core is a long lived butterfly which lays a few relatively large eggs each day. In such a species it is unlikely that reserves of carbohydrate and amino acid accumulated during the larval instars would be sufficient to last its entire adult life. Female E. core were kept in a large flight cage and assigned to one of four treatments. Each treatment comprised a different concentration of sugar and amino acid in the adult diet of the butterflies. Individuals with 25% sugar in their diet lived for longer and attained higher fecundities than those with 1% sugar in their diet. Butterflies on the 1% sugar diet removed greater volumes of food solution than those on the 25% sugar diet. The availability of amino acids in the adult diet had no marked effect on longevity and, if anything, had a negative effect on fecundity. The composition of the adult diet had no discernable effect on egg weight in this species. Sugar is shown to be an important component of the adult diet of E. core but their requirement for amino acids in their adult diet remains unresolved. Finally, using the known volume of food solution removed each day, estimates were made of the minimum amount of energy required by this species each day and the amount of energy required to produce an egg.
