Notes: Abstract The in vitro optical properties of slices of human brain tissue were measured. The experiments were performed with an integrating sphere and covered the wavelength range from 400 to 1100 nm. Both normal brain tissue (white and grey matter) and tumour tissue (a malignant glioma and a melanotic melanoma) were investigated. From the experimental data the Kubelka-Munk absorption and scattering coefficients were determined. From these data we calculated the transport absorption and scattering coefficients by using the diffusion approximation. Blood and water appeared to be the dominant chromophores. In the wavelength range mentioned, the absorption coefficients varied over more than two orders of magnitude. The scattering coefficients increased slowly towards the shorter wavelengths.

Notes: Abstract The Stark effect has been studied in the odd-parity 6snf1,3F3 Rydberg series of barium with high-resolution laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy. Scalar and tensor polarizabilities have been measured of 6snf1F3 levels with n=11–30 and of 6snf3F3 levels withn = 12 − 40. The contributions of the adjacent even-parity Rydberg levels to these polarizabilities have been calculated as far as data are available. This results in important additional information on the only partly known 6sng1,3G4 series and confirms the perturbation of these series atn = 24 by a 5d7dJ= 4 level. A tentative three-channel quantum-defect-theory analysis of the1,3G4 series has been performed. It is shown that reported level energies of the 6snd1,3D2 series are systematically 0.14 cm−1 too high.

Notes: Abstract The polarizabilities of the barium 6snf 3 F 2 levels with principal quantum numbern ranging from 11 to 40 have been measured in a high resolution laser-atomic-beam experiment. In Coulomb approximation the contributions to the polarizabilities of all known even-parity levels connected with the3 F 2 levels via the electric dipole operator have been calculated. In this way information on the to a large extent unknown 6sng 3 G 3 Rydberg series is extracted. The results support earlier observations of a perturbation of this series in betweenn = 18 and 19, but no evidence has been found for a perturbation nearn = 14.

Notes: Abstract In the last paper on the polarizabilities in the 6snf Rydberg series of barium results for the 6snf 3F4 levels withn=13–40 are reported. The scalar and tensor polarizabilities are analyzed using existing data on the adjacent even-parity 6snd 3 D 3 series as well as data on neighbouring 6sng 3 G 3 and1,3 G 4 series derived from the polarizabilities of the 6snf 3 F 2 and1,3 F 3 series. This results in information on the to a large extent unknown 6sng 3 G 5 series and confirms the perturbation of this series in betweenn=15 and 16 by the doubly excited5d7d 3G5 level. A tentative two-channel quantum-defect analysis is presented. In conclusion the results on the 6sng configuration deduced from the study of the quadratic Stark effect in the 6snf configuration are summarized.

Notes: Abstract In a CW laser-atomic beam experiment Stark manifolds in barium originating from the Rydberg states 6s40f 1 F 3, 6s40g 1,3 G 4,3 G 5 and 6s40h 1,3 H 5 have been studied. Accurate quantum defect values for higher orbital angular momentum states (l=6, 7) have been determined. The Stark manifolds are also calculated by diagonalization of the energy matrix in the presence of an external electric field. Good agreement between experiment and calculations is obtained.

Notes: Abstract High resolution laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy has been applied to study the hyperfine structure of the barium 6sng Rydberg series forn=6−40. The singlet-triplet mixing of the two 6sng J=4 series is deduced through a diagonalisation of the total Hamiltonian. Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT) has been used to reproduce both experimental level energies of the 6sng J=3,4 and 5 series and the extracted singlet-triplet mixing. The close-coupling channels of the 6sng Rydberg series turn out to be nearly purejj-coupled channels in contradistinction to lowerl Rydberg series. Furthermore MQDT is used to analyse the observed isotope shifts and peak intensities of the 6sng Rydberg series.

Notes: Abstract In a CW laser experiment on bound Rydberg states of barium electric-field-induced level crossings were studied. A regular type of avoided crossing of 6snf 3 F 2 and 6s (n+4)s 3 S 1 levels (n≈60,M=0) was observed under circumstances where the minimum separation was larger than the linewidth involved. This type of crossing could be reproduced using a diagonalisation procedure of the total energy matrix in the presence of the field. However, in the case of avoided crossings of the 6snf 3 F 2 and 6s(n+4)p 1 P 1 sublevels, where the minimum separation was smaller than the linewidth of the3 F 2 level, an interference-like profile was recorded. An important feature in the explanation of this interference-like profile turned out to be the broadening of the3 F 2 level by small field inhomogeneities.

Notes: Abstract The 5dnd and 5dng J=2, 3 and 4 as well as the 5dns J=2 autoionising series of barium have been studied with two-step pulsed laser excitations in an atomic beam. Dipole moments and the interactions with the 6s∈l continua were fitted starting from existing Multi-channel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT) analyses. The interactions of the 5dnd J=4 and 2, and 5dns J=2 series with 6sεg J=4 and 6sεd J=2 continua could be analysed succesfully.
