    Notes: Abstract 72 Strains belonging to 44 species of ascomycetous black yeasts were analyzed for their coenzyme Q systems. Prevalent were Q-10 and dihydrogenated Q-10 systems. Members of the Dothidealean suborder Dothideineae have Q-10 (H2), while those belonging to the suborder Pseudosphaeriineae mostly have Q-10. The anamorph genus Exophiala Carmichael and the teleomorph genus Capronia Sacc. seem to be heterogenous.

    Notes: Abstract The morphological and physiological characters of the species of Blastobotrys, and of a number of similar species of Sporothrix, Trichosporiella and Candida were studied. Blastobotrys is defined as having mother cells (primary conidia) which form distinct, secondary conidia. Sporothix has non-catenulate conidia, or the conidia are catenulate without marked differentiation of conidia of first and second order. Trichosporiella is delimited from Candida by a stronger coherence between hyphal cells, arthroconidia being absent. Four new Blastobotrys species are described, and two unnamed species; two new combinations are proposed in Trichosporiella. Related species in other genera are briefly discussed. A new Stephanoascus teleomorph is described in two strains originally identified as Sp. fungorum. Two diagnostic keys to the described taxa, using either morphological or physiological characters, are given.

    Notes: Abstract Within the hyphomycete genus Sporothrix Hektoen & Perkins three distinct groups are recognized on the basis of carbohydrate patterns. In the first group, and in Blastobotrys Klopotek, mannose is predominant while xylose and rhamnose are absent; this suggests a relationship with the Ascoideaceae. A second group, comprising anamorphs of Ophiostomataceae, is characterized by the presence of rhamnose. A third group is characterized by the presence of xylose, indicating a basidiomycete affinity. Three sections are erected to accommodate these groups.

    Notes: Abstract The new species, Hyphozyma roseonigra, characterized by pink colonies, budding cells with minute annellated zones and brown, septate hyphae, is described. It is non-fermentative, shows no colouration with Diazonium Blue B, and has an ascomycete-type cell wall ultrastructure. A key to the accepted species and varieties of Hyphozyma is given.

    Notes: Abstract The morphology and cultural characteristics of Ophiostoma piceae were described on the basis of 22 strains from the CBS collection supplemented with 25 fresh isolates from Poland, mostly from necrotic parts of Quercus robur. The pleomorphism of anamorphs of the fungus is described in detail. The various cultural types could be reproduced by replicate transferance. The identity of the anamorph strains was confirmed using some strains that produced perithecia. It is concluded that cultures of O. piceae may be quite different in appearance, and that several names that are in current use should be regarded as synonyms. An emended description of the taxon is provided.

    Notes: Abstract Many yeast-like fungi assimilated n-hexadecane, butylamine and putrescine as sole carbon sources. Methanol was not assimilated. This points to a physiological similarity to endomycetous, hydrocarbon-utilizing yeasts. Stephanoascus ciferrii assimilated uric acid, adenine and allantoin as sole source of carbon and nitrogen. All strains of Geotrichum candidum and many other yeast-like fungi assimilated acetoin and butan-2,3-diol. Assimilation tests for adenine, uric acid, allantoin, acetoin and butan-2,3-diol were found to be suitable for taxonomic purposes. Extracellular antigens immunologically related to those produced by Geotrichum candidum were detected in the cell-free culture liquids of several yeast-like fungi. The extracellular antigen excreted by Stephanoascus ciferrii was species-specific.
