Notes: Summary The fine structure of the hypertrophic olive is reported in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy, the cause of which would be attributed to extensive symmetrical lesions in the dentate nuclei of the cerebellum and central tegmental tracts of the pons. Ultrastructurally, the enlarged neurons and their processes showed massive aggregations of neurofilaments, large accumulations of concentric laminated bodies, and occasional abnormal neurofibers (paired helical filaments and straight tubules). Their implications are briefly discussed in relation to olivary hypertrophy. Eosinophilic globules were seen in a neuron. Glomeruloid bodies were not seen.

Notes: Summary An autopsy case of Nasu-Hakola's disease (membranous lipodystrophy) is reported. A 43-year-old Japanese man, whose parents were not consanguineous, had been suffering from frequent long bone fractures since the age of 10. Neuropsychiatric symptoms, which were characterized by euphoria, disturbance of attention and dementia, appeared at his thirties and generalized and/or localized seizures and apallial syndrome at the later stage. The neuropathology revealed diffuse leukoencephalopathy of the cerebrum. The peculiar aspects in this case were membranocystic changes in the lungs [Yagishita et al. Virchows Arch [A] 408:211–217 (1985)], diffuse degeneration of the cerebral cortex, chiefly in frontal and temporal lobes, and many axonal spheroids throughout the cerebral cortex. The ultrastructure of spheroids in the cerebral cortex demonstrated aggregations of mitochondria, dense bodies and minute concentric bodies and a small amount of neurofilaments.

Notes: Summary We report a case of cerebral gangliocytoma (GC) with a variety of unusual structures in the tumor cells. Light microscopically, the tumor consisted of typical ganglion cells, atypical cells which has argyrophilic granules in the cytoplasm, and a few astrocytes. Electron microscopically, the tumor cells showed typical gangliocytic features, which had abundant rough endoplasmic reticula, ribosomes and cored vesicles of 90–150 nm diameter, a few 50-nm-diametered non-cored vesicles, and other common organelles in their cytoplasm. Furthermore, neoplastic ganglion cells contained a variety of abnormal structures, including membranous cytoplasmic bodies (MCB), Zebra bodies (ZB), tubular structures, branched tubular structures (BTS), concentrical laminated bodies and curvilinear bodies (CB). The MCB, ZB and CB resembled those in GM2 gangliosidosis (GMG), and the BTS that in infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD). Although the significance of these inclusions is still unknown, it is considered that some common mechanism might play a role in the metabolism of both neoplastic neuronal cells and degenerating neurons (GMG and INAD). Synapses could not be observed anywhere despite complete neuronal differentiation of many tumor cells.

Notes: Abstract Bombardment conditions, chemical separation, and counting method were examined for routine determination of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in various matrices by charged-particle activation analysis with respect to reliability, reproducibility, simplicity, and rapidity. A system was then set up for trustworthy measurement of these elements.

Notes: Abstract Deuterium and15N were used as activable tracers for the study of the dissolution of hydrogen and nitrogen in silicon. Silicon was heated or zone-melted in D2-Ar, or heated in15N2-Ar after being covered with Si3 25N4. Depth profiles of D or15N in the resultant silicon samples were measured by the D(3He, p)4He or15N(α, n)18F reaction combined with repeated HF−HNO3 etching. These two measurements have proved to be highly reliable and sensitive and to offer useful techniques in the study of trace concentrations of hydrogen and nitrogen in solid matrices.

Notes: Summary Forty two cases of stiff elbow were treated by operation. Thirty three were subsequent to trauma, seven were due to ectopic ossification after quadriplegia, and two were associated with massive ectopic ossification after long term coma following head injury. Two separate skin incisions, postero-medial or medial and anterior, were used in most cases. In the post-traumatic cases, scarred, thickened posterior oblique fibres of the medial collateral ligament were usually found. Ectopic ossification was frequently situated on the postero-medial aspect of the stiff elbows. Resection of the thickened fibres or the ectopic ossification was the most effective procedure to improve elbow flexion. The average improvement in range of motion was 59° in post-traumatic cases, 72° in ectopic ossification after quadriplegia and 127° in ectopic ossification following coma.

Notes: Summary When the histamine (HA) turnover in the brain of mice was estimated on the basis of the pargyline-induced accumulation of tele-methylhistamine (t-MH), a predominant metabolite of brain HA, the enhancing effect of phencyclidine (PCP) on the HA turnover was antagonized by a large dose of naloxone. However, a dopamine receptor antagonist haloperidol, which is also a potent σ receptor antagonist, did not inhibit the effect of PCP on the HA turnover. [abetd-Ala2, abetd-Leu5]enkephalin, a prototypic δ opioid agonist, markedly enhanced the HA turnover. The effect of this peptide was demonstrated not only when the HA turnover was determined by the pargyline-induced t-MH accumulation but when it was estimated by the HA depletion induced by α-fluoromethylhistidine, a specific inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase. A σ agonist, SKF-10047, and a κ agonist, ethylketazocine, had no PCP-like enhancing effect on the HA turnover. These results suggest that PCP enhances the brain HA turnover in mice by stimulating, probably indireclty, endogenous opioid systems.

Notes: Summary We compared the effects of phencyclidine (PCP) and methamphetamine on body temperature and brain histamine turnover in mice. Methamphetamine at 5 and 10 mg/kg produced dose-related increases in rectal temperature, whereas PCP given in the same doses had no significant effect. In mice pretreated with α-fluoromethylhistidine, an inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, PCP produced a marked hyperthermia. PCP markedly accelerated brain histamine turnover, as measured by the accumulation of telemethylhistamine, a predominant metabolite of brain histamine, following administration of pargyline. Methamphetamine had no significant effect on the histamine dynamics. These results suggest involvement of brain histaminergic neurons in the action of PCP but not methamphetamine, and the presence of a histaminergic thermoregulatory mechanism.

Notes: Summary Parametric relationships between the genotype x environment interaction and the genetic correlation of the same attribute measured in two different environments are derived. It is shown that the criticism by Fernando et al. (1984) of Yamada's method (1962) in the case of unbalanced data is irrelevant.
