    Notes: Abstract A nonpremixed bluff-body burner flow and flame have been studied using planar flow visualization and species concentration imaging techniques. The burner consists of a central jet of CH 4 in a cylindrical bluff-body and an outer coflowing-air stream. Planar flow visualization, using Mie scattering from seed particles added to the fuel jet, Raman scattering from CH 4 and laser-induced fluorescence of CH combined with Raman scattering of CH 4 provided information on turbulent flow, mixing and combustion. The CH 4 imaging system utilized two cameras, which enhanced the dynamic range of the diagnostic system by a factor of 10 over a single-camera system. It was observed that the fuel jet stagnated on the axis due to interaction with the high velocity air flow. The flow and mixing were found to have significant coherent and noncoherent, large-scale, time-varying structures. The detailed CH 4 Raman and CH fluorescence measurements of an air-dominated bluff-body flame revealed that the stagnation zone governs mixing and flame stability. Through large-scale mixing, the stagnated jet feeds the recirculation zone and also creates a favorable condition to stabilize the flame detached from the bluff-body. The instantaneous flame zone, as defined by CH, was found to be narrow and concentrated in an envelope around the stagnation zone. This narrow flame characteristic is consistent with that observed for jet flames. Although the internal structure of the flame envelops have not yet been defined, these results suggest that this bluff-body flame can be modeled by a “flame sheet” type approach, where the reaction front is captured by the large-scale structures. This should simplify the development of modeling approaches for these flows since molecular mixing and chemical reaction, which occur within the “flame sheet”, can be separated from the large-scale mixing process.

    Notes: Abstract Twenty-six percent of 53 systemic lupus erythematosus sera had high levels of IgM antibody to human T-lymphotropic virus Type I, significantly more than the 5% of normal controls. Neither IgG antibodies to Type I virus nor IgM or IgG antibodies to Type II virus were increased in lupus. Further analysis using competition immunoassay and Western blot techniques also suggested that the IgM Type I antibodies in lupus sera were directed against viral antigens but did not completely exclude a nonviral reaction. Other studies also have not found IgG antibodies to the Type I virus but have not tested for IgM antibodies. Our study suggests that human T-lymphotropic virus Type I or a related virus may be involved in the pathogenesis of some cases of systemic lupus erythematosus.

    Notes: Summary High levels of the GAL7 gene in the yeast cell appear to titrate regulatory factors and to impair transcription of related sequences. To investigate the role that the GAL regulatory factors GAL4 and GAL80 have in this process we have compared the accumulation of mRNA transcribed from single-copy (plasmid-borne GAL7 and chromosomal GAL10) and high-copy (plasmid-borne GAL7) genes in several GAL regulatory mutants. Our results show that functional GAL4 gene product is required for induction of transcription from the single- and high-copy genes. In a strain containing the GAL4 gene fused to the high expression ADH1 promoter, glucose can replace galactose to induce high levels of transcription of GAL7 and GAL10 genes, although the kinetics of accumulation induced by the two sugars are distinctly different. In the presence of high levels of GAL4, maximum accumulation of mRNA from single and high copy genes is elevated two-fold; disruption of the gal80 gene in combination with high levels of GAL4 results in a further two-fold increase in transcription. In this genetic background, galactose-induced transcription of the high copy GAL7 gene results in a greater than 50-fold increase in the levels of GAL7 mRNA, representing 30%–50% of the total cellular mRNA. Our results are consistent with a cooperative effect of saturation of multiple GAL4 DNA binding sites and with a limiting factor, in addition to GAL4, that is required for transcription of the GAL genes.

    Notes: Abstract A new method of testing the visual field in children has been developed on a standard IBM personal computer AT with enhanced graphics display (EGA) using software written in Basic. Conventional perimetric methods are usually imposible to perform in children because they are long and tedious and unlikely to maintain the child's attention for their duration. They also require an immobile eye, which is impractical in children. In contrast to current methods, the test allows the subject's eye to move in an effort to achieve improved fixation and uses the guise of a game to hold the child's attention. Preliminary studies show that the test achieves these objectives and offers the possibility of self-examination without constant skilled supervision. The relatively low cost of the system should enable visual field examination to become more widely available than it is at present.
