Notes: Abstract Mast cells were isolated from the bovine liver capsule by treatment with collagenase. The extract from the mast cells contained aprotinin. The concentrations of aprotinin, heparin and histamine in these mast cells were (196±42) pg/cell, (1.6±0.2)×10−4 IU/cell and (32±3) pg/cell (mean±S.E.M. of 8–11 experiments), respectively, determined by an enzyme immunoassay, spectrophotometrically and fluorometrically.

Notes: Summary HLA phenotypes and haplotypes in relation to organ-specific autoantibody responses were studied in 82 Japanese patients with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. HLA-DRw9 antigen and HLA phenotype of DRw9/X (X: not DR4) were increased in patients with organ-specific autoantibodies other than islet cell antibody (CP〈0.02, RR=4.02 and p〈0.05, RR=2.30, respectively); whereas HLA-DR4 antigen and HLA phenotype of DR4/X (X: not DRw9) were increased in those without the autoantibodies (CP〈0.001, RR=3.95 and p〈0.01, RR=2.46, respectively). HLA haplotype of Bw61-DRw9 was increased in patients with the autoantibodies (p〈0.005, RR=4.94), and HLA haplotype of Bw54-DR4 was increased in those without the autoantibodies (p〈0.001, RR=5.52). The relative risk of HLA-DR4/DRw9 was the highest among all HLA-DR phenotypes or genotypes in patients either with or without the autoantibodies. No association was, however, found between the incidence of islet cell antibody and HLA-DR phenotypes. These findings suggest that Type 1 diabetes among Japanese is immunogenetically heterogeneous as is Type 1 diabetes among Caucasians; and the differences in HLA-association of Type 1 diabetes among ethnic groups might give a clue to understanding of a role of HLA-antigens in the development of Type 1 diabetes.

Notes: Abstract The conventional penicillin submerged culture has several drawbacks: filamentous fungi solidify into pellets or become pulpy, which has so far had bad effects on the separation of penicillin from the broth, on the monitoring and controlling of the culture system as well as on the productivity of penicillin. By using polyurethane foams as a carrier for the fungi Penicillium chrysogenum, the authors have studied a novel cultivation method for this microorganism. The following results were obtained: 1. The effect of urethane foams on the growth characteristics of Penicillium chrysogenum was studied. It was found that the microorganism crept into the carrier, then formed a biofilm of 0.45 mm in thickness on the surface layer of the carrier. 2. The use of urethane foams had the effect of improving not only the mass transfer rates of various nutrients, but also that of oxygen in the culture system. Six times as much penicillin could be produced as is obtainable by traditional cultivation methods. 3. An operational strategy for the addition of polyurethane Toams to the culture medium could be developed.

Notes: Abstract Premature rabbit neonates (gestational age 27 days) were treated at birth with natural surfactant purified from chloroform extracts of porcine lung lipids either by acetone precipitation (Surfactant CK, n=10) or liquid gel chromatography (Curosurf, n=22). Another group of animals received artificial surfactant “reconstituted” from isolated low molecular weight (≤15 K) apoproteins and synthetic dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) (Aposurf, n=10). The phospholipid concentrations of the preparations were adjusted to provide the same individual dose of DPPC for each group of treated animals (3 or 4 mg). In comparison with untreated controls from the same litters, there was a 4–7-fold enhancement of lungthorax compliance in all groups of surfactant-treated animals during a 3-h period of artificial ventilation. The average initial (20 min) compliance value was lower in the Aposurf-treated group than in animals receiving natural surfactant preparations, but the difference between the groups gradually diminished and was no longer statistically significant during the 2nd and 3rd h of artificial ventilation. Judged from the fall in tidal volume during ventilation with a short expiration phase (0.17 instead of 0.75s), the apoprotein-based artificial surfactant was also less effective in stabilizing the lungs. A similar conclusion could be drawn from data on alveolar expansion in histological sections, evaluated by automated image analysis. Alveolar volume density was improved only moderately in the Aposurf-treated group (0.24 vs. 0.14; P=0.05), whereas the expected, prominent increase in this parameter was observed in both groups of natural surfactant-treated animals (0.48–0.62 vs. 0.14; P〈0.001). We conclude that a physiologically active artificial surfactant can be prepared from the smaller (≤15 K) apoproteins, DPPC and DPPG; the in vivo effects of this preparation were clearly beneficial, yet inferior to those obtained with the same dose of natural surfactant.

Notes: Fe multilayered films with various intermediate layers are formed. Their magnetic properties and film structures are examined to understand the mechanism originating soft magnetic properties. The soft magnetic properties change with the lattice mismatches between Fe and intermediate layers, showing low coercive force and high relative permeability at lattice mismatches from 0.4 to 1.2%. It is thought that the lattice mismatches above 0.4% decrease Fe crystallite size and improve soft magnetic properties. Although Fe crystallite size is small at the lattice mismatches above 1.2%, the soft magnetic properties are poor. This is because the large lattice mismatch increases internal stress and magnetic anisotropy energy. This report indicates that the good soft magnetic properties are obtained when both Fe crystallite size and internal stress are small.

Notes: A GaInP(N)/GaAs( p) heterojunction bipolar transistor was fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) for the first time. The common-emitter current gain exceeded 200 at a current density around 10 A/cm2 and the offset voltage was as small as 50 mV. Thermionic emission theory indicates that the conduction-band discontinuity (ΔEc) at GaInP/GaAs heterointerface is as small as 30 meV at room temperature and this value was more than 160 meV smaller than 0.19–0.22 eV obtained by the C-V profile method. The band-gap energy for MOCVD-grown GaInP was 60 meV smaller than the intrinsic band-gap energy (1.91 eV), but this value is too small to explain the difference between the present ΔEc value and the previously reported ΔEc value.

Notes: High performance thin-film heads for disk drive systems have been developed based on a dry process. Heads were computer simulated and optimal design was carried out. Relationships among Ni-Fe composition, domain structure and wiggle of the read-write waveform were obtained. Based on these results, optimum Ni-Fe composition range was determined. A planarization procedure for an inbedding insulator of the conductor coil was developed. Also narrow track patterning and gap depth controlling procedures were developed. Using these procedures, a two-layered seventeen-turn thin-film head for a large capacity disk drive system (23 Mb/in.2) has been developed. The head exhibited excellent read-write characteristics.

Notes: The influence of an addition of Al on the corrosion resistance of amorphous 100-nm-thick Tb-Fe coevaporated films has been studied. From measurements of the change of the optical transmittance, it is seen that the growth of pin holes is reduced considerably. However, the addition of Al also results in a decrease of the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of the Tb-Fe films such as the Curie temperature, the Kerr rotation, the perpendicular anisotropy, and the coercivity. These problems, however, are recovered easily by replacing part of the Fe by Co. This replacement also contributes to the improvement of the corrosion resistance. It has been shown that Tb-Fe-Co-Al films have a much better corrosion resistance than Tb-Fe or Tb-Fe-Co films, while having the same good magnetic and magneto-optic properties.
