Notes: We have successfully passivated the surface of n-type (100) GaAs on the basis of P2S5/NH4OH treatment of the surface. A fivefold increase in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity results at room temperature when the surface is passivated and the PL intensity remains the same even after ten days' exposure to room air. Current-voltage characteristic also corroborates the PL measurements and shows that the GaAs surface retains its integrity when passivated with P2S5 and its electronic characteristic remains invariant with time even after exposure to air for one month. The results are indications of the robust stability of the passivated GaAs surface.

Notes: Summary Mitochondrial DNA from four paired (fertile and male-sterile) lines and six isocytoplasmic strains of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) were fragmented by endonucleases and their electrophoretic patterns were examined. Cytoplasmic male sterile lines differed from their male-fertile counterparts consistently. Among the isocytoplasmic strains, KS 36A (S. verticilli-florum cytoplasm), KS 38A (S. conspicum cytoplasm), and KS 39A (S. niloticum cytoplasm) showed minor differences from the other strains. Results suggest that restriction endonuclease patterns are useful in detecting differences in mitochondrial genomes.

Notes: Summary In Rivulus marmoratus development of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) parallels that of retinal photoreceptors. Although structurally functional by mid-incubation the full complex structure is not achieved even when the yolk-sac is absorbed (3-days post-hatched). Melanogenesis is evident at 0.2 incubation with premelanosomes present up to three days after hatching. The distribution of junctional complexes, basal membrane foldings and coatedpits throughout development is noted. Myeloid bodies, already present at mid-incubation, appear initially as single lenticular-shaped structures which later may form whorls, or coalesce around oil droplets, glycogen clusters or phagosomes thereby giving rise to myeloid patterns characteristic of a mature RPE. The functional significance of these changes is discussed.

Notes: Summary The effect of isotretinoin on experimentally induced comedones was studied by means of histoplanimetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To induce comedone formation, insoluble cutting oil was applied to the ventral surface of the ears of rabbits for 2 weeks. After comedones formed, isotretinoin was fed to the rabbits by a feeding tube, daily, for 4 weeks. A low dose (2.0 mg/kg) and a high dose (20.0 mg/kg body weight) were selected for two different groups. Soybean oil served as the vehicle. Histoplanimetrically, the high-dose group showed a significant decrease in size of comedones when compared to the control group and the low-dose group [P〈0.005], and in the high-dose group, the follicular lumen contained a small number of loose, non-adherent, horny cells. Upon SEM examination, the comedones were seen to have a ‘chrysanthemum’ appearance before treatment. After treatment, the high-and low-dose groups both showed evidence of the elimination of comedones on three-dimensional analysis.

Notes: Abstract The current state of knowledge concerning the expression of the nuclear genes that code the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-binding polypeptides of photosystem II is presented. This review covers the structure of these genes, the complex multistep pathway involved in their expression, and the environmental and other factors which regulate their expression. Some of the effects of these factors are mediated, at least in part, at the level of transcription, but other effects can be explained only by the existence of multiple posttranscriptional regulatory steps.
