Notes: Abstract We studied calcium homeostasis and the serum calcium response to oral 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25 (OH)2D3] at a low pharmacological dosage of 0.1 μg/kg daily in 14 early hypocalcaemic asymptomatic neonates. Seven hypocalcaemic neonates were not treated. In hypocalcaemic neonates serum PTH levels were normal, the urinary C-AMP response after PTH stimulation was poor and plasma 1,25 (OH)2D3 was low. Treatment with 1,25(OH)2D3 resulted in a rapid increase of serum calcium. The increase was more rapid in neonates treated with 1,25(OH)2D3 than in untreated subjects. A similar result was obtained in one of a pair of identical twins. These results suggest that a low dose of 1,25(OH)2D3 is effective in treating neonatal hypocalcaemia. However, the response was delayed for 48 h. The reason for this delay is not clear.

Notes: Summary A simplified alternative procedure was derived for computing selection indices with various restrictions. The procedure involved construction of a sub-index for the unrestricted traits by the conventional methods (Smith-Hazel index approach) and construction of a sub-index for the restricted traits based on the restrospective index approach. The two subindices were then combined to obtain the desired index which met the prespecified restriction. The formulation is straightforward and easy to compute and does not involve the complicated formula as does the derivation of restricted index by the use of the Lagrange multiplier method. As a consequence of simplification, the proposed procedure is approximate in terms of optimal gain in net merit. The procedure presented can also be extended to derive an index with simultaneous imposition of multiple restrictions. Numerical examples were given to illustrate the use of this alternative approach.

Notes: Summary A total of 2,457 lifetime performance records of 29 genetic groups of mice was analyzed using multiple regression of records on the proportion of gene contribution from 6 lines (designated as Lines MP, mQ, WP, wQ, CP and cQ). Genetic effects were partitioned into line additive, line maternal, direct heterosis, maternal heterosis and paternal heterosis effects. The line additive and line maternal effects were expressed as deviations from Line cQ. Seventeen of 25 line additive effects differed significantly (P〈0.05) from Line cQ whereas only 4 of 25 line maternal effects deviated significantly from Line cQ. Deviations in line additive effects from cQ were negative in all lines examined whereas deviations in line maternal effects from cQ were all positive, indicating a negative relationship between line additive and line maternal effects. Direct heterosis effects were all positive and significant (P 〈 0.01) except in the MPxWP cross which was produced by mating Lines MP and WP of the same base population (P). Maternal heterosis effects were significant in 10 of 20 cases whereas paternal heterosis effects were significant in 13 of 20 cases. Although direct heterosis is a major component of total heterosis effects (sum of direct, maternal and paternal heterosis), the results suggest that parental heterosis may need to be considered in producing multiple way crosses. The fitting of line additive, line maternal, direct heterosis, maternal heterosis and paternal heterosis effects in the multiple regression model effectively accounted for all genetic effects in lifetime performance.

Notes: Abstract We measured the activities of two major forms of α-glucosidase in lymphocytes and cultured fibroblasts from normal healthy controls and patients with Pompe's disease by using 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-d-glucoside as substrate. We found (1) enzyme activity of the pH4 and pH6 forms varied with age, and (2) patients with Pompe's disease showed very low activity of the pH4 form and a low ratio of pH4 to pH6 forms. We established a reference range and were also able to diagnose prenatally the homozygote and heterozygote forms of Pompe's disease which occurred in families of southern Chinese and aborigines in Taiwan. This enzyme biochemical study may be useful in anthropology.
