Notes: The stability of a spheromak with an energetic ion ring, carrying a current comparable to the plasma current, to the tilt mode is considered. For small departures from sphericity a perturbative approach is applied to an appropriate energy principle in order to calculate the lowest nontrivial kinetic contribution of the ion ring. An analytic stability criterion is obtained. It is seen that the prolate configuration becomes more stable while the oblate one is less stable than in the absence of the ring. The prolomak becomes stable when the ring kinetic energy exceeds the magnetic energy within the separatrix.

Notes: Ion motion in the acceleration region of a magnetically insulated ion diode and electron flux to the anode are studied locally. Two classes of slowly growing ion deflections are observed, indicating the presence of transverse electric fields in the diode gap. A simple model, which treates the diode as an emitting surface perturbed away from planarity, is offered to infer profiles of the electric field. These profiles are consistent with the observation that one of the ion-deflection classes is associated with a significant fraction of the increases of the electron flux to the anode. The inferred growth rates of the perturbations suggest that the observed ion deflections are caused by a nonuniform expansion of the anode plasma. The transverse electric fields associated with the perturbations constitute a significant (as much as 20%) fraction of the diode accelerating field. Short duration ion deflections accompanied by intense electron bursts to the anode are also observed. The data suggest that these deflections and the electron bursts originate at processes in the cathode plasma.

Notes: The effect of the whistler turbulence on anisotropic electrons in a thermal barrier is examined. The electron distribution function is derived self-consistently by solving the steady state quasilinear diffusion equation. Saturated amplitudes are computed using the resonance broadening theory or convective stabilization. Estimated power levels necessary for sustaining the steady state of a strongly anisotropic electron population are found to exceed by orders of magnitude the estimates based on Fokker–Planck calculations for the range of parameters of tandem mirror (TMX-U and MFTF-B) experiments [Nucl. Fusion 25, 1205 (1985)]. Upper limits on the allowed degree of anisotropy for existing power densities are calculated.

Notes: The resonance broadening theory is used to derive the diffusion tensor for resonant particles in a spectrum of electromagnetic modes propagating parallel to the magnetic field. The magnetic trapping limit for saturation of wave amplitudes is discussed.
