Notes: Summary A 55-year old woman was diagnosed as having chronic myeloid leukemia in 1961. After 9 years with stable white blood cells, progression of the disease was noted (white cells up to 180×109/l; splenomegaly to the umbilicus). Busulfan was given over 4 weeks resulting in a remission of 13 years duration. Progression was observed again in 1983, 22 years after the initial diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia. Therapy with hydroxyurea resulted in another remission of shorter duration. Two chromosome studies showed the Philadelphia chromosome in 100% of metaphases without additional aberrations. In 1985 blast crisis developed. The cause of death as determined at autopsy was an undiagnosed miliary tuberculosis. The presented case is of special interest since (1) it is a report of the longest surviving patient with chronic myeloid leukemia, and (2) in contrast to other cases with long survival, this patient did not show chromosomal mosaicism or any additional chromosomal aberrations.

Notes: Summary The basic principle of “reversible gastric banding” as a new surgical approach to morbid obesity treatment is the creation of a small fundus reservoir using a silicone cuff which is coiled around the stomach close to the cardia. The extent of obstruction corresponds to the amount of liquid in the cuff which can be varied by puncture of a valve implanted in the subcutis. The reversibility of gastric obstruction is the great advantage of this method as compared to vertical banded gastroplasty or gastric bypass. We studied this method in animal experiments using seven “Göttinger Minipigs”. In two animals the objectives of the study were reached, the observed complications, mostly caused by the nature of the test animal, are analyzed and discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature on animal experiments in bariatric surgery.

Stadium I, II: 1) Radikale Resektion. 2) Chemotherapie. 3) Cerebrale Bestrahlungsprophylaxe. 4) Lokale Radiotherapie. Stadium III: 1) Chemotherapie. 2) cerebrale Prophylaxe. 3) Radikale Operation im Ausmaß der ursprünglichen Tumorausdehnung. 4) Lokale Bestrahlung. Die bisherigen Ergebnisse bei 15 Patienten sind ermutigend.
Notes: Summary As a result of strict cooperation between oncologists, surgeons and radiotherapists we developed a comprehensive combination therapy for small cell lung cancer (limited disease): Stage I, II: 1) radical tumour resection. 2) chemotherapy (Cohen). 3) cerebral radiation prophylaxis. 4) locoregional radiotherapy. Stage III: 1) Chemotherapy. 2) cerebral radiation prophylaxis. 3) lung resection in an extension required by the initial tumour. 4) radiotherapy (local). The preliminary results in 15 patients are encouraging.

Notes: Abstract As female crickets, Teleogryllus commodus (Walker) age there is a progressive change in their ability to produce eggs as indicated by the number deposited. Virgin females lay very few eggs (11/week) when only one week old, but the number increases to an average value of 160/week by the age 3, 5 or 7 weeks post imago. There is essentially no change in the number of eggs oviposited when very young (1 week old) or senescent (7 weeks old) females are mated, but there is a dramatic increase in the long term production of eggs when females are mated at middle age (3 and 5 weeks old). The results are correlated with previously published data from this species on the JH III titres of virgin females and females mated at different ages.
